In today’s episode of Impact Theory, I’m joined again by Jocko Willink to discuss the complexities of modern warfare, leadership, and the influence of social media on public opinion.
Jocko Willink is a retired Navy Seal, globally recognized leadership expert and author of one of the most empowering books ever, “Extreme Ownership”. In today’s discussion he details his leadership principles and explains how to apply them. He also talks about building relationships and trust, understanding human nature, and learning to control your ego and emotions.
We also cover:
- Foreign interventions
- Applying military strategies to business decisions
- Active listening and bridging gaps between opposing views
- Dynamics of power
- Power of memeable concepts and commitment to change
- Importance of maintaining one's freedom in the face of tyranny
- Social media's role in triggering emotional responses
- Self-reliance and the American spirit
- Role of leadership in guiding public opinion and avoiding manipulation
- Avoiding the "mob mentality" to effectively guide
- Israel's strategy against Hamas and long-term consequences
- Jocko's perspective on Putin's pride and potential strategy
- The intrinsic human desire for freedom and control
From discussing the pitfalls and emotional manipulation prevalent on social media to the strategies behind psychological warfare and the current geopolitical landscape, Jocko does not shy away from addressing the pressing issues of our time.
This conversation on building resilience, strategic thinking over emotional reactions, and the enduring power of freedom is sure to shift how you view the world and your role within it. Remember, in a world where chaos reigns, it's your clarity and your mission that makes the difference.
Chapter Markers:
[0:00] Jocko for President?
[15:24] Leadership qualities and principles
[50:08] Choice & freedom in America
[1:18:29] Wild West brutality
[1:44:11] Military expertise in entrepreneurship
[2:09:13] Israel-Hamas conflict
[2:38:32] Challenges young men face today
Powerful Insights From Jocko Willink:
"I think right now, what we need is someone that's less polarizing and has a more open mind and is more concerned about, or looking more to find solutions and compromise and figure out how to make things work, rather than, hey, here's what the party that put me in this position wants to have happen. And…what that results in is oftentimes nothing happening."
“Come up with a flexible plan and you start to move in that direction and then you iterate and make changes to the plan as you get closer. But you're still sticking within the principles that you believe and still going towards the end state that you're trying to reach. That's what a leader should be doing and that's what leaders should be doing."
"They can suppress, they can suppress the instinct for freedom that human beings have for a certain period of time. But I don't believe that they can actually extinguish the flame of freedom."
"I'm going to make small decisions, and I'm going to continually assess, and that's what I'm doing all the time. And that's what a good leader does is look and make small adjustments and pay attention to the feedback."

If Jocko ran for President youd treat him like Trump 1000%. You have Zero clue how blind you are to what is going on. You worship politicians that dont even claim US/America anymore. They are soooo blind they cant even see their Party is claiming a new country while destroying this one. They are pushing businesses out of NY and California for their trillion dollar companies(black rock, vanguard ect) to buy the real estate cheap. They have warehouses Full of replacement workers they pay and protect. Are they gonna vote out of the US and pull China in? In turn it will cripple the US?

If you go back to the 80s on Oprah (back when she use to love him) and many othe shows like Larry King... Trump said the same thing. He never wanted to run. His exact words were if it got bad enough... Now look what we have. He could definitely speak to people in better phasing but the end is still the same. I will take mean tweets and a better American than this absolute disastrous administration running the country right now.

Emotion can get the strong minded defeated. Emotion opens a weakly fortified door and allows a dominate force to take over control fully. Rational determination recognizes the weakness immediately and either fortifies the weak door or abandons it as a lost cause. Sometimes it's better to count the losses as lessons to NEVER repeat again. If you can not realize the difference, then you have a weak spot that you need to strengthen, or you had better find a different route, to find success and full strength. There is no room to sympathize with someone else's emotional discord, as that weakens your own resolve. Pandering to someone else's weak emotions, when they don't completely want to change, only brings you down to their weak level. It is better to turn your back to them and walk out. AND that could apply to family too. So suck it up and get your own house in order and keep it that way.

Marines have noted and reinforced Lief Babins complete disrespect towards them, causing more harm and damage then rebuild and rapore. It's been clearly stated that Jocko is a joke in the community. Peeling the gold from the trident. You see a facade. This is a man who let Chris Kyle loose. He allowed innocent lives to parish. Unnecessary and unethical was SOP for TFB. Every time I hear an ex-military talks about "Freedom", I say sure, it is one of the things, but show me which war was so much of a threat to the US' freedom that it was justify. I'd say ONE war: WWII. That's it. As a immigrant who came from a country where freedom was never a problem, I'd say this is NOT what "makes America Great". Every single western country has freedom, that is not the exceptional part. From an immigrant perspective, OPPORTUNITY is what make America exceptional. I could have never achieved what I achieved in the country of my origin.

Being the hegemon is always going to force you to express power to keep others from flaring up. The type of structures some of those others would impose don't hold opportunity as a primary goal. I think you miss the point that you don't know how bad things could be had we not shown that we not only could but would use force to protect our interests and way of life.

This whole line displays a fundamental lack of understanding about the fundamental dynamics of how politics work in the world we inhabit.. & the chasm between some school house rock notion of how our "Democratic Republic" is supposed to function / what was taught in Civics class.. Vs. the stark reality of how our largely unelected oligarchy works in reality... I mean no disrespect.. & I like Jocko as well .. but we can't afford to be this naive.. I do not think encouraging celebrity influencers / personalities like Jocko to run for office would be ultimately effective.. & I think he is smart enough to know this.

How would you frame the two sides of the debate?
@hob976
@hob976 20 күн бұрын
@@ForgingFreedomTV Cool name! And thanks for asking... In short, there's no such thing as free healthcare (anywhere), there's only levels of subsidization coupled with varying qualities of management. On that side of the debate, they think that under a "single payer" system, regardless of quality, healthcare is better spread between "haves and have-nots". On the other hand, there's also no "free market" in healthcare ( anywhere ) but people on this side of the debate want more market directed pricing. To them, healthcare is a good, and all goods are subject to economic laws. They think that, not only does healthcare pricing come down on it's own with less bureaucratic price regulation, but money is directed where consumers want it most. I think I tried to frame both sides fairly. I admit it's easier to say it the dumb way.

What I truly don't understand is why people are STILL putting faith into our current politicians, as if they will eventually do the right thing. Furthermore, I always hear these people with large followings and who maybe have the ability to get elected say "well that's not what I want to do, I don't want to be a politician", when at the same time, these are the people that are level headed and honest. When are u people going to realize, THESE ARE THE TYPES OF PEOPLE WE NEED TO GET ELECTED! If you don't want to be a politician, GREAT! Run and get elected and then leave after you've done your part. How bad did this country have to get before people with the right minds finally step up and do something??

Fantastic point about people complaining about what they don’t have while other people in other places around the world have even less. Sadhguru once said “when people talk about making it day to day, what does that actually mean? To some it’s making $100 million a day while others see it as getting their hands on enough food to be able to eat twice a day.”.

As smart as he is on many topics, he completely lost the plot when he started talking about Ukraine. He keeps thinking that the right strategy is asymmetric insurgency, ignoring what will happen to the civilian population if the front collapses to draw the Russians in and fight an insurgency. There will be a massacre on a level not seen since the Holocaust. Also, Russia doesn't have infinite resources either. It's not the Soviet Union. A 10:1 loss ratio would absolutely crush them. They're almost out of armor already and the main thing they have is artillery and aviation. The reason they've been able to advance a few km this year is because there is massive shortage of 155mm shells. It's that simple. He's so out of touch with the realities of this war that he keeps looking at everything through the prism of his own outdated experience. This war is nothing like the war he fought. It is shattering paradigms daily. For starters, it has finally rendered the tank obsolete. When a $2K drone takes out a $2M tank, the asymmetry is already there.

Civil war only requires one side willing to do violence. There is only one side that threatens political violence and it is those on the right. Trump is the only one threatening political violence. His followers are the only ones that were willing to betray the country by attacking the capitol building on January 6, 2021. There had not been violence like that since the War of 1812 against the British. Let us hope that cooler heads prevail this time and the right does not listen to Trump’s incitement to violence.

I totally understand where you're coming from, but I'd give the guys more credit than that. Not asking questions doesn't mean soldiers don't see whats going on, or don't still wonder how or why they're being told to do certain things. Aa soldier is like an employee in a company. You may question your manager/ceo's business strategy yourself, but at the end of the day, you're being paid to perform your job, so you wouldn't necessarily call one out or demand an explanation, because you aren't owed one if its not applicable to your job. If anything, I think Jocko and most soldiers have the best perspective. Just because they're not constantly challenging their leaders authority doesn't mean they don't still see whats going on. It just means they understand they have a job to do, and if they want to question their commanders, they can do it off mission. America didn't get to where it is now because the soldiers don't question their commanders, far from it. It got this way because the majority of the civilian population don't question anything, and blindly follow those in charge. Soldiers/veterans are actually some of the most vocal.

While I agree with him on the majority of the things he is talking about, there a few that the is straight up wrong about. Like "America protects freedom" bit, for example. America does not protect freedom outside of America, quite the opposite actually. Those kids in other countries that don't have beds and bedrooms that he is talking about, those are often the countries that America invaded and destroyed for their natural resources, or because "America" didn't like their socio-economic structure, and they urgently needed some "democracy" brought to those countries. If someone is critical of the USA Today, it's usually because of the US foreign policies, including all the covert operations and regime change operations that America always finds itself involved in. We cannot sit here and discuss how great America is, while the US government is stealing close 70,000 barrels of oil a day in Syria (which is 80% of their daily oil production), or while our government funds the genocide in GAZA...

Hey Tom, Great conversation! It is really refreshing to see two intelligent individuals having an in depth conversation about principles and philosophy in an age of reactionary content and "drive by" media. I noticed around 39 minutes Jocko was talking about trillion dollar bills being introduced without elected officials having time to review the content of said bills. That leads me to a question (technically two) I would like to ask you: Are you aware of the Citizen's United v. FEC Supreme Court case in 2010? In a nutshell, the decision by the court effectively allowed lobbying funds & efforts to be protected as free speech under the first amendment and gave rise to the Super PACs that seem to have a stranglehold on our elected officials. I've dumbed that down quite a bit but would encourage you to look into it further, as the effects of the decision have skewed the dialogue of our political discourse toward lobbying interests as opposed to populace interests, in my opinion. I very firmly believe that after 14 years, the unchecked lobbying and vast amounts of funding that funnels into political campaigns has severely compromised the ability of our elected officials to enact legislation that benefits their constituents, rather legislation being introduced heavily favors the interest of lobbying/ special interest groups who these officials rely on to fund their next campaigns. This topic doesn't seem to be discussed much in the overarching narrative of political discourse, so I was just curious to see what your thoughts are on this subject. Thanks, Jordan

Great interview. Can't say I agree with everything, but great interview. Specifically, NATO had nothing to do with Russia in Georgia, Chechnya, Syria, 2014 Ukranian conflict, African conflicts that Russia started. There is absolutely no indication that Russia will stop if they are allowed to win in Ukraine. If they win, Russia will be much stronger and have more incentive to go deeper into Europe. The Europeans know this and are armming themselves. The only EU country (France) with nukes says they may put troops in Ukraine. Germany is considering a nuclear program. The way to keep this from getting worse is to give Ukraine every single thing they want so that we aren't drawn into another European war. We weren't able to stay out of WWI or WWII even though we tried very hard. Substitute Russia for Germany and China for Japan and the incentives are very similar. Russia is a land locked country with insecure borders. China has no oil and it is very easy to block them in the Indian Ocean. My other voice of contention is that manufacturing isn't so easy to solve although Jovko's company in NC is a shining way forward. Productivity is what allowed his clothing company to beat out Asian clothing manufacturers. We can increase Productivity on higher ticket items and beat out low cost manufacturers. However, there are thousands of low value add, but necessary, parts in a car (for example). The low value add parts need to be built in a place (like yesterday's Asia) with low-level skills because labor costs are appropriately low. The high-value add is designing a vehicle and then assembling it. The high value add can be done here at home, but we need other areas with lower labor costs to manufacture the parts that are more simple. Otherwise, the costs of our cars, phones, machinery, etc will quintuple. We have to be really careful that inflation doesn't destroy any gains in wages just because we want to produce at home. It isn't going to be simple to deglobalize, but it's happening for sure

So wrong. Forgive the book but its a complex situation. When NATO was formed Russia enjoyed a near 1000 mile buffer zone of threats to its own sovereignty. Its no secret NATO nations do not align with Russia on philosophy. This "gentlemen's agreement" has been geopolitically known for a long time. Remember America's response with Russia moved missiles to cuba? Same concept. In 2014 after the Russian invasion of Crimea political scientist John J. Mearsheimer wrote a paper attributing the blame towards the West for this Russian aggression by allowing NATO to expand and encroach too far towards Russia. Despite uncomfortable reading this idea is closer to the truth. Ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union Western powers led by the United States have pushed for NATO expansion. This first took place in 1999 with Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic joining the alliance and then in 2004 another large expansion occurred with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joining from the north with Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia to the south. NATO was gradually moving east towards Russian borders despite promising in the past that it wouldn’t. This is an important geopolitical issue because despite the huge size of Russia three quarters of its population lives within an area between the borders of Europe and the Ural Mountains. Russia’s most important cities, including the capital city of Moscow, are all geographically located close to Europe. As a land power Russia’s vulnerability is its closeness to Europe and the flat expanse of land belonging to the North European Plain that divides the two is susceptible to invasion. Historically Russia has always relied on this huge land mass to act as a buffer zone between its enemies and any encroachment on this is taken very seriously by Moscow. To put this into context prior to the expansion of NATO Moscow sat behind a 1,000-mile buffer zone, this has now been reduced to just 200 miles. So, faced with this perceived threat from NATO slowly encroaching upon the Russian border and diminishing this important buffer zone what theoretical approach to international security has Putin adopted to deal with this issue? Within international security studies ‘Realism’ theory explores the idea that the word is full of anarchy and views the world as it is rather than how we wish it to be. Despite the wishful thinking that others view NATO simply as a defensive alliance promoting cooperation between nation states the reality is that Putin views NATO as a hostile military alliance, and one that is now encroaching upon his doorstep. Under realism the only way a nation state can ensure its security is with the appropriation of power. Russia has certainly appropriated military power with nuclear weapons, the largest military in Europe and the world’s fifth biggest annual defence budget (in 2021). In recent years Ukraine has politically shifted away from Russia with a forced change of government that has focused more towards the West and has generated talks of joining NATO. This has caused tensions with Moscow and has struck debate among Western countries and the United States. Nation states like Ukraine should be free to join whatever political alliance they want to, but if Russia has a genuine security concern then this should be recognised and taken into consideration. Is there corruption in Ukraine, undoubtably yes, but probably no more or no less than any other average country in Eastern Europe. Are there elements of Nazism present in Ukraine, again regrettably yes. However, these issues are domestic criminal matters to be resolved by Ukraine internally, they do not give Putin ‘jus ad bellum’ (justice in war/the right to go to war) and to allow his nation state to use military force against another nation state. Putin has securitized these issues and has socially constructed the idea that Ukraine’s military and Nazism is a security threat to Russia. Within international security studies the constructivism theory explores the idea that a nation state can ‘securitize’ an issue with another nation state to the point where it can become an existential threat compelling them to act. After invading Ukraine Putin promoted the idea that he was forced to act in order to protect the rights of people living there whilst safeguarding Russia’s security in the process. In reality, like a geopolitical game of chess, Putin’s actions were due to the fact that he would prefer to control and influence Ukraine himself rather than the West and at the same time by doing so he believes he is securing the integrity of his borders and maintaining that all important buffer zone between Russia and NATO.

However, it takes more bravery and sense of responsibility to accept the wrong doings and flaws, and move forward in collaboration to build a brighter future. Individual sovereignty is worth protecting for all people. It’s also important to acknowledge that the US could have been a far worse force of power, and that what makes this country great is the reason why many people want to immigrate here. Americans must understand this to continue to fight for personal liberty and freedom for all. Without this understand, we will crumble in the hands of those that will use our ignorance and emotional instability to their advantage and agenda. Treat each other with kindness even though you disagree with each other. You’re more likely to have more in common with those around you than you really think.

There is no negotiation or solutions talking with Russia about quitting the war.

This is the problem with the US - hypocrisy. The US was willing to go to nuclear war because it didn't want Russian forces in the sovereign country of Cuba in 1962. Well Russia has the same objection in Ukraine - completely fair. To add to that Ukraine has a massive Russian population. Since the war started in 2014 Ukraine slaughtered over 10,000 Russian civilians yet the US thinks Russia should just sit back? The US in comparison only lost 3,000 civilians on 9/11 and then went to war destroying the middle east.

@@MS-wz9jm We have a huge population of Mexican citizens living in the United States of America. We don’t let Mexico come and attack us. Russia has normal relations with Mexico yet we are not taking over Mexico either because they doing business with Russia. Your argument is laughable and lies. Russia killed millions of Ukrainians and sent them all over to Siberia and put Russians in eastern Ukraine. Eastern Ukraine is UKRAINE. IT HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED ALONG WITH CRIMEA AS UKRAINE SINCE THE USSR EVAPORATED INTO RUIN BECAUSE $$$ problems with corrupt government. Now stop your propaganda and lies. It’s obvious you are trying to send a BS message to sway people against Ukraine. 🤣. Why not just fix the plumbing and install utilities in the rest of the country and stop stealing toilets from your neighbors.

The power to stir up a whole nation of solid, egotistical and utilitarian individuals, and to persuade them that their greatest privilege is to set out and get themselves killed at the uttermost ends of the earth, with no hope of gain for themselves or their children and almost without their understanding against or for whom they are fighting, or why, is a simply incredible phenomenon which makes one afraid when one comes to think about it.

I would pay to watch a movie about Washington, but only in the same vein as they did Braveheart, and in the way he has been described here, sounds like an amazing warrior.

As someone who is not American - but definitely believes in the American idea - seeing Trump as a strong man is extremely difficult for me. In my eyes and most people outside the US, Trump is sickly weak, close-minded and a man with enormously weak self-esteem. Trump is incredibly easy to manipulate. All that is required; praise him, tell him how strong he is, how smart he is and what a good leader he is - and his narcissism and self-absorption will make him do anything you want from him... just ask Putin and Kim Jong-un

Trump has the literal speaking capacity of a child. The guy is a nasty freak and criminal that has openly admitted to things which suggest he is probably also a rapist or certainly engaged in sexual assault. The only goons that consider him a 'strong man' are on a spectrum of room temp iq to egregiously ignorant. I can't stand Biden but my God trump is next level.

I am not American either and I completely disagree. Look at the track records. With Trump, the world has been more secure, there were no wars at the door of Europe and the economy was running. Look instead at how disastrous has been the Biden administration. Moreover, look at the equally disastrous Barack administration which gave us instability in the Middle East thanks to his cursed Arab spring. Trump is so strong that he does not fear confronting the entire establishment.

You took it straight out of my words...its unfortunate that trump is viewed as brazen brush and strong ...he is unfortunately just a bully and is practically the opposite of what Jocko described to be a great leader. it is also unfortunate that Tom (unfortunately or fortunately showed where your allegiance is to) insinuated and led Jocko to agree that President Biden is weak and demented (we all agree he has declined in age and slower ) The state of the union address jacked up or not President Biden faced America handled himself well even in front of his biggest critics amid the booing and shouts he didn't loose ground and came swinging who "jacked up" could have such control and poise and hang around well after the address shaking hands...... however the parts that the "media" exposes are his weak ones compared to trump who is mostly incoherent and repeatedly lies and has nothing of substance and is always incendiary on most times no policy no progress all he says is me. me . me. While President Biden is not in the media all the time however policies are being made and things are improving he is always looking for a uniting common ground and so does the Democratic party i would not say it for the Maga party that has lost direction is dysfunctional and ineffective.......and the question of Biden as a CEO Jocko did not exhaust the answer just saying!!!
