In March 2014, Libyan rebels seized control over the MV Morning Glory, a North Korean-flagged oil tanker. After a week-long crisis, and at the request of the Libyan Government, U.S. President Barack Obama eventually gave authorisation for a team of U.S. Navy SEALs to board and retake the Morning Glory.

US Navy secured a hijacked North Korean tanker and brought it back to the Libyan Navy. That is quite an interesting tale.

Lots of ships are registered in less regulated or shady countries. Lower taxes, less regulations, different laws, things like that. Doesn't have to mean the owners or crew are North Korean.

Wouldn't be the first time. In 2007 the US saved a North Korean ship from Somali pirates. North Korea even publicly thanked the US for that one.

Knew this story and thankful no one put up a fight. To retake that ship, is an incredibly dangerous act. Well done to the team that drew the short straw.

234,000 barrels is equivalent to about 9.83 million gallons. with the average price of gas for March 2014 at 3.533 usd per gallon. That amount of fuel is worth about 34.7 million USD at the time (44.4 million usd in march 2023, adjusted for inflation).

3:18 If that was an unauthorised ordinary civilian boat, would they have incepted it before it got near the tanker? Was it something to do with the negotiations and therefore allowed to approach? I don't know, does anyone have thoughts?

Sounds really suspicious. So which courts do have jurisdiction over crimes at sea? A small boat with 3 people just happened to go out and offered to buy the crude oil???
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn Жыл бұрын
Boats are allowed innocent passage in international waters. At the time, the purpose of its transit was probably unknown. One could guess, but a guess would probably not hold up in court, to allow an order to block or detain it.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn Жыл бұрын
@@archstanton6102 A vessel in international waters is governed by the flagging nation. So until North Korea disavowed flagging of the ship, any cases would be tried in a North Korean court. When North Korea disavowed the flagging of the vessel, it becomes unflagged and any nation can seize it. Unflagged vessels are treated like pirate vessels. The U.S. Navy seized it then gave it to Libya. Technically Libya would have legal authority of it then. I am not an attorney. This is my understanding of international law/customs.

@LoanwordEggcorn Thank you. I was especially curious about the 3 "visitors" who came and returned to Cyprus. So they could have been sent yo N. Korea if the govt there had requested it?
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn Жыл бұрын
@@archstanton6102 Only when was the ships flag was North Korea. North Korea gave up flagging it before it got to Cyprus, so it was unflagged when it got there. At that point anyone could arrest anyone on board, and arguably try them in their own courts. That said, any court would have a difficult time trying to prove what was done and why it was wrong. You dig? (From: "Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo")
