My all time favorite way to clear door ways is to pay people like you to do it. I pay my taxes and vote for the pro-military/police candidate and clear that doorway in Haiti from the comforts of my sofa. Thanks for all you have done.

Went through police academy in 1985. Our dept was just learning this technique, "slicing the pie" & fatal funnel. It seems to work although I've never encountered a shooter, myself. I recently had more training in my Reserve Deputy status. It still works but you.kust practice. I periodically over the last 35 year searched my house or office for practice or if found insecure. Thanks for your service.

Exactly what’s taught in law enforcement but we usually have 2 LEO’s. I teach CCH in my state as a NRA/state firearms instructor. Question always posed to students: “ If you did not have a weapon in a situation you thought was unsafe in your home or wherever, than why with a weapon would you proceed to clear said structure with one?” Call law enforcement and remain safe outside the suspected dangerous zone. LEO’s are far better equipped than civilians to clear an area. Once had occasion where K-9 was sent in to clear a threat. Doggie took care of business real fast. Talk about taking a bite outta crime McGruff. Also, LEO’s have drones, motorized robot cameras, thermal imagining and a host of other neat stuff to clear an area offering a subject the opportunity to surrender. Deputies / cops don’t want to get hurt and go home to their families safe at the end of every tour of duty. And let’s not forget IC pepper spray. No LEO, none, want to ever have to use lethal force. It is a terrible thing to have to do to take another human beings life. Even if the shoot was deemed justified by the shooting review investigations; which is usually done by a next higher legal authority for LEOs or for civilians, by your local law enforcement. it is a terrible thing for the officer/deputy or anyone for that matter, to live with. Whether it’s the guilt of doing the act, that LEO, will first be relieved of duty pending a full investigation and s/he will avail themselves of after action counseling - both legal and emotional The shooting will replay over and over in your mind. There will be, maybe, nightmares too. It’s a terrible thing to take another human being’s life. You will have guilt after action, POSSIBLY PTSD and question what you did. For you civilians, even presenting a weapon can result in legal defense fees starting around $10,000. AND….. If the district attorney’s office brings charges, your legal defense fees start at roughly $50,000. Take-always: 1.) AVOID situations you deem dangerous where you may have to use your weapon. 2.). Better to walk away from a confrontation then have one if you possess a weapon. 3.) I teach concealed carry in my state and admonish students: the best gunfight result you can have is the gunfight you do not have. 4.) get some sort of legal defense services plan if you carry a weapon. 5.) if you are forced to use lethal force, follow the post-event responding LEO’s instructions. They don’t know what happened when they roll up to a call and must assess. Respectfully state you will comply with the investigation but invoke your right to remain silent until consulting with an attorney. 6.);you probably will be handcuffed, arrested and detained. Don’t resist, call your attorney. 7.) DO NOT have your weapon in hand when LEO’s arrive! They don’t know who the bad guy is. 8.) call 911 and state you were involved in a use of force incident, send response, both law enforcement and EMS because you will be in shock. Others may have called but you want to be the first caller. 9.). Comply with Officer/deputy instructions without objection. State you need medical attention from the event; YOU WILL NEED IT. There’s a reason law enforcement cannot make legal statements after a use of deadly force incident. Because they will be in shock! Are you any different? Remember: deputies and cops are human too. 10,) Bet you did not know that whoever signed off on your concealed carry class so you could apply for your permit, will most likely be subpoenaed (called by the prosecutor) to testify and support what that instructor curriculum taught in your class and demonstrate materials. 7.) if you carry concealed - get recurrent training and be able to justify same. Skills/ knowledge can deteriorate overtime. 8.) anyone in my class who says or believes “Better to be tried by twelve than carried by six” is politely excused at the next break and tuition refunded. I do not want to sign off anyone like that for a concealed carry permit. I pray all my students will never have to fire a weapon in self defense; but if they do, know your target, backstop and what’s behind where you’re shooting. There is no such thing as a warning shot. Be safe, be smart, be vigilant, and be a responsible armed citizen. Dirty Harry was a fictional movie. The best gunfight you can have is the one you don’t. Follow the law! YOUR BRAIN IS YOUR MOST POWER WEAPON. Use it. God Bless and Stay Safe!

Assuming the perp has a rifle, I'm not too comfortable even standing near the door! A barrage of bullets coming at me thru a wall is bound to hit me. Do you recommend hip walking or some other position other than standing straight up to reduce myself as a target?

Have taken room-clearing instruction in various solo/stack scenarios, so this was legit stuff - however the instructors set the stage with the caution of solo home defense room-clearing is a last resort where it's necessary to gather up other household members; 1st response is to barricade in a defensible location and call 911. Otherwise it can be a hi-probability way to never enjoy greeting tomorrow's sunrise... Suggest any add'l USCCA clearing exercises include that caution. Minimalist-trained civilians going Rambo in their home (or other location of which they have even less SA knowledge) may not end well.

How about clearing a room with a pocket door. My master bedroom and the hall bathroom have pocket doors. There’s no real coverage from the hallway into my master bedroom. From the bedroom out to the hallway, you have to reach across the doorway to slide open the pocket door. Quarters are super tight; in the hallway, in my house.

I would do one thing differently. Mike and Zack seem to doing a clear the way they would in a military/war scenario. Experience shows that people (even cops) get twitchy fingers in risky situations lie this, often shooting anything that moves. The huge risk in home defense scenarios is being surprised by a family member you didn't know was home and twitching off a round into them before positive identification is made. To mitigate that I'd recommend aiming at foot level when clearing unless you know for sure that the only person that could POSSIBLY be in that room is a bad guy, intent on doing harm.

The concern you have is definitely valid, and goes to show the importance of having a family home defense plan. Part of this plan could be as simple as telling your kids or spouse that where to hide and instruct them NOT to move from that hiding spot unless you or police find them. Do you have a plan in place with your family?

Ya it depends on your state. Look up 'castle doctrine' i believe. Some states nearly everything is in bounds. Other states you will go to jail if the perp is trying to run out of your house. There are cases of perps getting shot in the front yard as they are 'escaping', and I think those cases best explain the rational for not being able to shoot anyone just because they are on your property. I think the best answer is that it will be up to the judge you get, and if there is video or not.
