As part of the observation process for new referees, we did one round in which observed referees received feedback from Abdel Aziz and Fikrat Valiyev, followed by the second round, in which all bouts were directed by Fikrat. The following calls underscore 3 main points:
1. The importance of calling an attack (which includes arm/weapon extending, threatening, and hitting the target in the right distance). Little kids or not, when called and explained consistently, fencers get the point, pun intended, and adjust their game. See the sequence between 3:25 and 4:00.
2. The importance of correct, clear, and decipherable hand signals.
3. Proper calls lead to good fencing and advanced "physical chess" -type strategy.
