For me it was when they started primarily focusing on the online e-sports aspects of the game and nerfing the offline experience as a result. I almost exclusively played MyCareer and found it unplayable because of the competitive balancing they did for Park etc. I wish they'd allow you to take your player offline and develop him like you want to like earlier versions.

I was caught in the VC trap until 2k18, then I just created multiple builds offline, and played my league/eras. I just put myself in a draft and then what ever teams draft me then i'll use that team. so much more freedom, and creativity. I also force myself to wait at least 2 years until I get a new 2k, unless something crazy is added like Eras mode. 2k for all of its flaws still is the absolute best offline sports it terms of content, keeping stats/records, having players that date back to the 50's. its such a shame to see where VC has lead 2k, bc I would love to play online.

Big facts, there’s a part of me that misses the cringe story bits and cutscenes from story mode but in terms of the actual NBA career experience there’s so much more freedom and variation possible doing it in MyLeague not to mention the eras part. I never play online anyway since unless you pay money to build an OP character or grind for months you just get trounced in every single game by some 12 year old that used their dad’s credit card. If you could legit beat people with a crap character if you have real skill in the game that’s one thing, but there’s a certain point where you just can’t really compete anymore because their green windows are so large and their rating advantages let them breeze past you every time or swish it even if you’re in perfect position, and vice versa you get locked up not because they’re in good position but because their ratings win out over yours. Just not worth anybody’s time or money.

i stopped playing 2k when they started charging full price for basically a 1-2 year game rental. I bought 2k20 and can't even play it anymore. The business model 2k uses is predatory. You're stuck grinding a lot just to become mediocre in career, which I believe is designed to frustrate the player so they purchase VC to speed up the process.

For me this year was the final straw, Once I saw the “Curry Era”, it became apparent that 2k literally has become so lazy that they can’t even be bothered to fix features that they introduced last year, the courts are still waiting to be updated for the Lebron Era, rosters are still not filled at all, The only addition to The Curry Era was ONE SINGULAR SCAN UPDATE, while taking out players like John Wall, and Blake Griffin, and failing to add several key players outside of the obvious no show stars, they cut even more corners with jerseys, BECAUSE THEY DIDNT EVEN ADD ANY THEY LITERALLY TOOK OFF THE NIKE PATCH AND WENT “those are classic jerseys”.

People need to understand that 2k benefits from the misinformation. Its very intentional. People make builds at the start of the game based on the info they got from content creators that were part of community day, not knowing theyve already changed the game. Then when your build sucks you end up making another build, buying more VC. Then, later, they patch the game and change it again, forcing people to make more builds, all the while lining 2k's pockets. Its the enternal cycle of 2k.

In 2k24 I remember the first couple of seasons the difference in speed between slow and fast builds was not drastic so I made a 60 speed center... It was great (averaged 9, 12, 6 with 2 blocks per game in rec) until I came back to 2k 3 months later and all of the sudden the game speed was altered and it took me 10 seconds to get up court... This led to me falling into the trap and making 2 more builds (with money spent smh)

What cycle? I haven't buy 2K in like 5+ years. I'm so done with the game and their community and what they represent. 2K isn't about basketball anymore. What i really dislike is the hating course about NBA2K EVERY SINGLE YEAR. I don't know how many 2k players will understand this but it's like if Dante in the Devil May Cry games had to go in order of Sword->Gun->Trickster->Royal Guard. In Devil may cry 4 & 5, you can select any of the modes at any time with a direction on the dpad. That makes the combos free flowing and like Kofie said, you can react to what is needed instead of having to go through a list.

Haven't played 2k since 2k21 and just got 2k25. It's been fun, and ignoring the meta builds to make something unique has been a blast. I’ve been grinding my career for 2k and madden on games that are 10 years old. I maybe get the new 2k game on pc when there is a sale for it, since I’m a Celtics fan and want to play with the championship team. I just don’t feel like enough is improved in madden and 2k do be worth buying the new version every year. Plus, the old rosters don’t bug me. I find it fun seeing old players who were good but have been retired for a minute now.

Community day seems to be a full on 2K thing for periodic franchises as they just did that for Civ 7 - bunch of creators got invited to Firaxis, embargo until they revealed the gameplay this past August. Of course, Civ 7's systems that won't change are more helpful than things like core systems for NBA2K which typically don't change from game to game because basketball remains basketball. I think the only team that doesn't get that would be WWE2K because the content creators for that usually only care about the creative suite and you can't really showcase that.

“Meta isn’t where my skill lies” ! Preach! Bruh, I’ve never made a meta build and always had a high win p and rolled with monsters. 24 the first 2k I put time in to since 21. I hated the boat in 22, hated the city and lack of defense in 23, didn’t even bother with 24 until it was free and built 1 guy😂. Anyways, I built a 2 mid range creator. I have 85 mid range but only a 60 3 point shot. Out of 4 rec solo a games I averaged %78 from mid range, %55 from 3, 12 assists, 2 steals and 1 block per game while winning %100! In pro am 3s my stats were similar but win rate was %76 out of 150 matches. Also beat the 80th best team in the world 😂. With a 6’5 point guard. I took a hit on my 3 point to be able to max all my defense. I even have a 71 block, this way I don’t NEED someone every time the guy I’m guarding drives (since as of 22 shooting became so laughably easy everyone went wide iso but none of the PGs can guard each other when driving. I miss 21 where there were legit paint bigs. There’s so much about this game I can rag but not having a report player option is insane 😂, whether is a hate filled rant or ximming. Most importantly this game cost like 10/20k a year in boost 😂. Anyways, ya I never rocked meta. In 23, I intentionally made my guy 6’6 when meta was 6’8 so I’d be faster for chase down block. Stay true! Lastly, I think if anyone were to beat 2k they’d have to make the most fun arcade basketball game. Forget licensing real characters make something cool that’s customizable, because 2k have less jerseys now then 18 had, less glasses, less hats x less tattoos, and a face scan that’s laughable at best.

It's complicated because you have basketball fans looking to play their favorite sport game sold by a company with predatory business practices. If it's the only current basketball game, fans have to choose to miss out a year because of ideals or play the game flaws and all. Most love hoops so much they'll play even if it's subpar. Making the game is not on consumers sure BUT a company will not change their ways when no matter how bad people think the product is, they still pour hundreds of dollars into it. So if people really want 2k to actually completely overhaul the game, they need to actually impact 2k’s return on value by not buying the game and not buying the VC. 2k is suffering what most online games are suffering from and it’s chasing that e-sports money making games for the sweaty players so they can put on tournaments n stream them, what’s dumb similar to cod are these are yearly games so unlike a counterstrike or league of legends they can’t build a dedicated fanbase as when players start breaking the game and truly learning the mechanics the cycle starts again and now everything is flushed down as we have to learn from a new, companies no longer want to target the majority consumer and pick and play which is why we are losing couch play and 4 player split screen, remember when you could connect 6-7 controllers to your console we have become so good at games that’s it’s to our detriment

I miss the journey you use to be able to take in upgrading a player. It went away when you had to set in stone your caps, 2K16 was the last one that let you level up your attributes as you saw fit or needed. That made vc feel a lot more like an option to use instead of a necessity to play how you really want to. If I was getting boarded, I could finish a game and upgrade that. If my handle sucked, I could finish a game and then upgrade that. It use to be a lot more fun and spontaneous as compared to having to grind out a set in stone style and player.

Before 2K added My Starting 5, I always believe you’re player in MyCareer and Park/Rec should be separate. Very few people who are good at park/rec play that same way in MyCareer. Also since My Career is single player, it should be primarily offline. This could allow to subtract/re allocate certain skills from your player. One example is maybe your player has a high close shot or vertical ratings, you should be able to re allocate the Mypoints you some of those skill to other skill to reflect how players change throughout their career. It rewards players for actually playing through a game mode and technically doesn’t make your player “better” because they are losing attributes at the same time they upgrade.

It depends how balanced your initial build is. If it’s too far built toward one playstyle you literally just don’t have the flexibility to change it up like that, or it’s at least very suboptimal. In order to do what you’re saying someone would have to intentionally make a balanced build that has the freedom to go in multiple directions

I can see both sides, I agree with you that if you just approach the game loosely and do what feels good to you there’s not such a prominent feeling of getting scammed, but there also shouldn’t inherently be an issue with wanting to optimize your build in a competitive game. It’s very normal for those types of optimizations to get patched or nerfed but the issue is *generally* there isn’t money involved in those optimizations. Like in apex if your main character gets nerfed just pick a new one. But in 2k if your build gets nerfed you just wasted real world money. (Which tbf you wasted spending it on 2k to begin with but that’s a whole other discussion)

@@TyaColo and I can see that, maybe I’m just looking at it through the lens of someone that isn’t always trying to run meta KZbin/TikTok builds. I never watch a build video and make that build. Every build I’ve ever made was my own doing. I think the issue is with folks that rely on the build videos. They don’t give their builds any room for a patch bc the content creators have focused on getting every little attribute to its perfect limit to where you can just barely unlock this or barely unlock that. If they “patch” something by making an OP move that everyone is spamming have a higher threshold to unlock and now you can’t use it, i can’t really be mad. They have to balance the game at some point. The real argument should be about the real world money aspect. If it was like LIVE 19 and you just had to grind a new free build after something gets patched, folks wouldn’t be as mad.

my problem with 2k is not VC because i care less about playing vs other humans online i don't give a damn about builds ,my problem with 2k is the fact that the game uses algorithms to cheat thats the biggest problem with the game, even if your winning and destroying the Ai the game is not fun when the algorithms slow you down on a face break or it stops you from diving for lose balls by freezing your player ,thats whats killing the game for me , at one point it will make you shoot the ball after you just cross over the opponent when you right at basket instead off a lay up or dunk, you call a screen and the center no matter who it is will leave paint and run to three point line, fam boys will say its player skill set no its not because no way would Bill Russell come off a screen and run to three point line as a great post player. algorithms killed 2K i care less about micro transactions, whole reason why i fell in love with 2k years ago was the franchise mode , no offense but i dont play park or pro am thats not my thing im 44 ,2k franchise mode was the best of all sports games , madden is trash too has not been great since Vic was on cover. only games i play versus humans online are shooters.
