Today, I look at some teams from NBA History who I think had potential to become dynasties, but because of bad timing, injuries, bad luck, or some other reason, they were unable to achieve the status.
This video was inspired by the great Barry McCockiner: • NFL DYNASTIES THAT NEV...

For the 60's, I would include the Cincinnati Royals. If Maurice Stokes doesn't have his accident in 1958, that team would have been a true contender. For the 90's, the Orlando Magic had Shaq, Penny, Nick Anderson, Horace Grant, and Dennis Scott. Then, Shaq left, and it was over.

Louis also is the only 3 point shooter EVER to have a "second best season" *ONE HIT LESS* than his best season (compare to Curry at about 10% worse, for a prime example). It took the NBA *22* or *26* years to match his 3 point shooting records - Reggie Miller for hits in a season BARELY beat Louis in Reggie's BEST season, Ray Allen for attempts in a season in one of HIS 2 "most attempts" seasons. Louis doesn't appear to have the 3pt% of the other two - but keep in mind that the ABA 3 point line was *25* feet, not the NBA's 22' 9" or short period at 22' 3" - a significantly harder shot Louis was hitting. But when he ended up in the NBA after the merger (part of the dispersal draft) there was no 3 point shot for him to dominate. And for reference - there are 7 "unanimous" picks to the All ABA team - Louis was one of them, along with Dr. J, Mel Daniels, Artis Gilmore, Roger Brown, Dan Issel, and George "The Iceman" Gervin.

Kings could've been a dynasty in the early 2000s (2002-04 at minimum).

The 1993-2005 Pacers were honestly just a few bad breaks from being one of the greatest NBA dynasties of all time. 1994: Pacers were up by a bunch with Ewing in foul trouble in that Game 7, if he fouls out the Pacers move on and have a decent chance at beating the Rockets in the Finals. 1995: Pacers could've won Games 1, 2, OR 5 in that Magic series and took the series in six, they'd have had home court against the Rockets and matched up well with them and no way Reggie misses four free throws like Nick Anderson did 1998: Pacers were doing quite well against the Bulls in Game 7, a few more free throws or rebounds in that game and they're on to face the Jazz with even odds 1999: Larry Johnson doesn't get that miracle 4-point play in Game 3 and they likely beat the Knicks in that series 2000: Games 4 and 6 of the NBA Finals against the Lakers were both close and could've swung either way, especially without Kobe's Game 4 heroics, also the Pacers definitely would've beaten the Blazers in that year's Finals without that comeback 2004: All Reggie has to do is dunk that ball instead of go for a layup and they're up 2-0 on the Pistons in the ECF 2005: Without the Malice in the Palace the Pacers are the best team in the league that year and only the Spurs could've really challenged them

I grew up in Miami so I'm a Heat fan, but the first jersey I ever owned was an away Pacers Reggie jersey. those Pacers series against Knicks, Bulls and Magic were some of the most memorable of my childhood. Reggie was my favorite to watch.

Drexler's Trail Blazers are probably one of the most underrated teams, and probably if they had decided to go all-in in '89 with Petrovic and Sabonis, rather than leave the croatian on the bench and then trade him, and leave the lithuanian in Europe, they would have added two greats talents to a contender. Obviously it would have taken a period of adaptation, but if we think about how important Kukoc was to the Bulls' second three-peat, I don't see why Petrovic and Sabonis couldn't have done the same in the early 90s in Portland.

No they aren't they went back to back close to a dynasty but you need atleast 3 chips in a relatively short period of time to be a dynasty This has been commonly accepted throughout professional sports history.

@@robd1811 who made the decision that winning 3-in-a-row was the amount to become a dynasty? Lakers fans? Celtics? Bulls fans? which one are you??? winning 2-in-a-row is SUPER rare and has only happened 8 times since the NBA merger in 1976. the 1980s Pistons were in the Eastern Conference Finals five (5) seasons in a row from the 1987 playoffs till the 1991 playoffs, went to the Finals 3 times and won it twice. They were a top 3 team in the NBA for half a decade. That's a dynasty. Lebron never did that with one team. He bounced around and left his teams hanging to prop himself up. The 2010s Heat were in the Finals 4 years in a row and were 5 Finals games away from being the only team to win the championship 4 years in-a-row.

@@ea11111 i never said three in a row i said 3 in a short period of time (that is up for debate 4 years 5 years 6 years 7 years etc idk i lean more towards 6 years but it's subjective). This goes for all professional sports. Look at the steelers of the 70s considered a dynasty in football, but not the dolphins of the 70s they won 2. Look at the cowboys of the 90s 3 in 4 years considered a dynasty but not the broncos of the 90s who won 2 in a row. Look at the patriots of the 00s they won 3 in 4 years that decade considered a dynasty, but not the steelers who won 2. In fact the commentary around the steelers when they played green bay and lost was if they won how would this dynasty compare to the 70s dynasty. That is how it has always been measured no one except homers considered the bad boys or the rockets of the 90s a dynasty they were close but they aren't. Furthermore back to back champions have happened multiple times in every decade (except this one) since the merger that is a lot. lakers in 87 and 88 pistons 89 and 90, bulls three peat rockets back to back, bulls three peat, lakers three peat, lakers back to back, heat back to back and golden state back to back. that is 9 times not 8 count em up. This would show in the NBA that if something can happen that often it isn't as hard as you are making it out to be (It is really tough but it doesn't make you a dyansty). There was a 12 season stretch from the 86-87 season to the 97-98 season where everyone that won a championship repeated. It happened twice in the 00s with the two different laker squads and twice in the teens with the warriors and the heat. Kobe is my favorite player ever and I wouldn't consider his back to back squad in 08-09 and 09-10 to be a dyansty. For the record if you don't know anything about college football you would know from looking at my picture I'm a georgia fan we went back to back in in the 20-21, and 21-22 seasons we aren't a dynasty yet. I'm a hawks fan not a lakers fan. The lebron lead heat wouldn't have been the only team to win 4 in row the celtics did it in the 60s twice. As far as who made the decision this was commonly accepted throughout sports history if you go back and read sports newspapers etc it was always 3 in a relatively short period of time. I can name the dynasties in basketball, Minneapolis lakers pre integration, celtics 60s, none in the 70s; 79-80/87-88 lakers; 80-81/85-86 celtics; 90-91/92-93 bulls; 95-96/97-98 bulls; 99-00/01-02 lakers; 02-03/06-07 spurs; and the 14-15/17-18 GSW team. Not all those teams went back to back not all those teams 3 peated but all of those teams won 3 titles in a relatively short period of time. The argument that a back to back team made it to a conference finals 5 years in a row or went to 3 finals or was so many games away from winning 3 or 4 chips instead of two shows they were CLOSE to being a dynasty but something has to be said for winning 3 chips in a relatively short period of time when so many great teams went back to back but couldn't get that third ring.

@@robd1811 I think you're wrong. The 17-0 Dolphins were a dynasty and are still talked about today, especially in the South Florida sports market. Dominating a league like that is historic, which it is. the surviving members of 1972 Miami Dolphins still get together to do a toast whenever the last remaining undefeated team takes a loss every season. Its a tradition that has continued after 52 years. that's dynasty shit. being that good for any stretch of 3 years or more is insane at the level they're playing at. I'm a Heat fan and I'm not a Rockets or Pistons fan. I just have enough understanding of the game to respect how good those teams were and what they were able to accomplish. repeating in any sport is one of the hardest things to do. especially since non-playoff teams are given an additional 2-and-a-half months of rest for the following season. the Kobe-Pau Lakers were 2 games away in the 2008 NBA Finals from winning 3 chips in-a-row. but I guess that's not good enough for @robd1811 I suppose lol I always find it interesting when arm-chair athletes try to bring down what is and what isn't greatness. as if they understand what it takes to reach that level at anything, let alone maintain it beyond a year. to dominate the world's best for 2 years is truly a dynastic accomplishment.

@@ea11111 look we are just going to disagree on this I think back to back champions aren't dynasties you do. You have a different standard for what a dynasty is than sports fans have had for the majority of sporting american history that is ok. I think the broncos of the 90s rockets of the 90s heat of the early teens bad boy pistons, dolphins of the 70s, kobe pau lakers etc were all ALL TIME great teams I just don't think they are dynasties........... It would benefit me as a fan if I thought it was. I'm a georgia dawg football fan diehard since i could walk. I wish I could say georgia has a dynasty right now but the truth is in all of sporting history teams that soley went back to back aren't considered dynasties.

The Dynasties I always think of actually happened but not to the extent they could have. I always wonder what would have transpired if Kobe & Tim Duncan weren't in the League at the same time.. does one get minimum 6 or 7 championships Does Magic get 6 without bird, does Bird get 5 Does LeBron have 7 without Wardell sniping from the rafters?

I think another underrated factor people don’t talk about when mentioning the 90’s Blazers is the fact the centre they drafted, Arvytas Sabonis, wasn’t allowed to play in America until much later when he was passed his prime. I mention this because during the bulls 2 3-peats their weakest position was the centre, and who knows what that duo of Clyde Drexler and Arvytas Sabonis could have done.
