Robinson's legacy keeps improving with time. He was one of the few superstars of the Jordan era who won a championship. He won the championships shortly after Jordan retired, but he still won championships during the era when there with all those great players - Barkley, Drexler, Ewing, etc. Of those top players during that time it was basically Jordan, Hakeem (and Drexler) and Robinson who won championships. He's similar to Hakeem, because his legacy seems to get better as the years go by as people realize what a great player he really was.

I think he played in the greatest center era as well. Hakeem, Ewing, Shaq, Mourning, Smits, Mutombo.... that's just off the top of my head. Hahaha. Hakeem and Robinson were as good as it gets

@@Boss3Nate I'd have to look up Hakeem's data, but I believe Robinson and Hakeem's teams were the only two during Jordan's 90's run who did not have losing records against the Bulls. I think Pippen talked about that he was glad Houston couldn't win their conference during the Bull's two runs, as the Bulls struggled to beat Houston. I believe it would have been similar against the Spurs. Robinson and Hakeem's defensive skill set altered the way Jordan and Pippen were able to attack the paint, and kept more of their shots on the outside.

I met Robinson once. Nicest guy ever. I was doing Jamm’n Against The Darkness in Portland with Steve Jamison in 1995. I was shooting hoop and I heard “can I shoot with you?” I turned around and it was David Robinson… I gotta shoot hoop with David Robinson, Buck Williams, Avery Johnson, and David Wood. Great memory

Robinson was my favorite player growing up. I mailed my Robinson NBA Hoops rated rookie card to a Spurs address when I was a kid and it was mailed back to me SIGNED.!Maybe he signed it ,maybe he didn't but that made my day when I was a little kid. Still have the card back in NC at my parents house.

David Robinson spent 4 years in the Naval Academy and served 2 years as a civil engineering Officer at the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia after graduation. He could have transferred after his freshman to any D-1 school before incurring a obligation to serve but chose to stay. There has never been a player as classy, intelligent and generous as David Robinson who a truly good man.

@@mongoslade277 Just FYI I read that the Navy Secretary reduced Robinson's term in part because he had grown so tall and was not permitted to serve in many roles such as aviation, submarines or surface warfare. Robinson actually would not have been able to attend the Naval Academy due to his height, but was "only" 6-foot-7 when he was accepted his senior year in high school. Robinson ended up serving two years on active duty, four years in the active reserve and two years in the inactive reserve.

David Robinson is who my friends used to call me, I was one of the tallest out of all of us at the age of 13-14, my dad bought me his jersey for my birthday, I'm from Chicago so it's Bulls all day and Pip was my fav because as I got older, my game was more like his. My top 5 all time fav players (not people, lol) were Scottie Pippen, David Robinson, Grant Hill, Latrell Sprewell and D-Rose.

So true! We forgot that DRob missed the finals from a nail when he was just a rookie (Spurs were short by a basket to win the game7). After his tremendous rookie season, the chemistry and supporting cast rapidly faded away (Departure of Larry Brown, Rod Strickland, retirement of Cummings, transfer of Sean Elliot, etc). Nowadays, he ruined his body by carrying year after year a team - without any stats - above 55 wins a season. Too often, I hear that Olajuwon stepped over him in 1995 … it is not completely true: at the time, Spurs were poorly coached and they add no other offensive system that systematically give the ball to David who was constantly double teamed; at the other side, the Rockets were playing with 4 sharp shooters making all rotation/double team on Olajuwon impossible and acting like this, they were spacing the game … this is not only Olajuwon that beat up Robinson but well Rudy Tomjanovich. I don’ t want to discredit Olajuwon legacy … but from this defeat, Robinson was unfairly criticized. Think 5 seconds about it: before Duncan, the starting 5 of the Spurs was made of DRob, Denis Rodman, Vinny Del Negro, Dale Ellis and Avery Johnson … most of those - no disrespect - wouldn’t play 6th or 8th man for any team eying a playoff spot. Legend of the Spurs started there : build your team on a solid player surrounded by courageous and tenacious player whom strength comes from cohesion

On top of this, two events combined ruined his reputation: the loss against the Rockets and Rodman who severely criticized his leadership after winning with the Bulls. Things would have been so different if the Spurs would have kep Larry Brown, an healthy Sean Elliot and never hired Rodman (who is a true warrior but never had solid offensive skills like Cummings to relieve Robinson from scoring). Prime Robinson is at the same level that Prime Oneal & Olajuwon ... not below. Period

His 71 point game is why I say the only thing Robinson was missing was heart, because if he wanted it, he was unstropable. He was told he needed to score 60+ to win the title and he's like, "OK", and just does it. Clippers (I think that's who he played) said they were double & triple teaming him the whole game 'cause they knew he was going for the scoring title and would be taking most of the shots, and they still couldn't stop him. The physical abilities & BBall IQ were there, if he had a fraction of Jordan's desire for greatness, I suspect he'd be top 5/top 10 all time great, any position list.

As a kid in the late 80s and early 90s, MJ was my favorite player. But for whatever reason, after he retired the first time, I felt like I had to choose a new favorite player and stick with whomever I chose. I had an entire set of Dream Team cards and knew they were supposed to be the best players in the NBA. David Robinson just stood out…if the Dream Team had been wrestlers in the WWF heyday, Robinson looked like Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior rolled into one being. He was my favorite from that day on, and became even more so when I found out about his background and our common faith. But around 97, I had a problem…Tim Duncan had quickly become my favorite college player at WF. I assumed he would go to another team besides the Spurs and I’d have to root for two teams…well, obviously we all know what happened with the draft lottery that summer. I don’t think I’ll ever know as great a joy in sports as having my all time favorite players play for the same team. I don’t believe Robinson ever reached his full potential in the ways that his contemporaries Olajuwon and O’Neal did, nor do his accomplishments match the level of Abdul-Jabbar, Russell, or Chamberlain. But I do believe he was one of the most gifted centers ever to play the game, and it’s refreshing to see him get some recognition in hindsight. PS: I’m still somewhat ticked after all these years that Olajuwon and Ewing both got 9 ratings in the Speed, Power, and Dunk categories on NBA Jam TE whereas Robinson got 8s in those categories. He definitely should have had a 9 in power and probably speed as well…there is no way he was not stronger than both of those guys when he was in his prime.

He got close to the top of the Western conference in his prime, they just lost to better teams. I also respect that DR's loyalty to the Spurs, and San Antonio in general, never wavered.

People are on some revisionist history sht, trying to act like a bunch of 90s guys were underrated when they weren't. -HOF -1x MVP -10x All-NBA -10x All-Star -8x All-Defense -Dream Teams I and II as well as Bronze medalist in 88. 3x Olympian! -Rookie of the Year -Defensive POY -#1 overall pick -75th Anniversary Team -Had his own popular Nike shoe as a Center FOH with the underrated sht. As accomplished as Robinson was, David easily would be receiving far more historical attention (not including Olajuwon) had he been in the situation of his all-time peers at center. - Duncan played nearly his entire career with incredible depth of top-end teammates (Parker, Ginobili, Kawhi, and even post-injury Robinson) plus stable excellence at coaching, not to mention playing in a thin era for big men (only Shaq and Dwight with a short run of Yao). - Bill Russell had unparalleled depth of top-end teammates, which means he could really focus on defense, to which Admiral was similarly talented while being the clear superior on offense and overall game. - Shaq, like Duncan, played the majority of his prime with few threats at the center position, not to mention being mostly paired with a top-three wing player in any given year (Kobe/Dwyane/Penny)--light-years better than David's best teammate for most of his career (Sean Elliott). - No doubt Kareem and Wilt deserve their standing as top 3-centers of all-time (with Hakeem), but let's not ignore that their team success were predicated on having stacked line-ups of in-prime perennial all-stars/hall-of-famers. How many MORE rings would Robinson (or Olajuwon) have won had he been blessed with an arsenal teammates on the level of Oscar/Dandridge/Magic/Worthy/Wilkes/Nixon/Cooper or Arizin/Cunningham/Greer/Chet Walker/West/Baylor/Goodrich...

David Robinson is underrated as a NBA player. He was so great getting up the court and having a great post game to compliment that game. Definitely one of the best centers of all time. It was a great point that Steve Smith made about his unselfishness to take a back seat to Tim Duncan.

You hear a lot about Jordan, Shaq, Hakeem, Stockton & Malone, Barkley, but rarely hear national sports media mention Robinson. That's how. That said, after coming back from his injury, he basically handed the team over to the rookie, Duncan, to run, so I think that has a lot to do with hurting his legacy, since the rest of the guys on that list are considered leaders.

I used to use David Robinson as the measuring stick to how great other player's greatness. David Robinson played against a very young Arvydos Sabonis . David Robinson played against a very young Shaq . David Robinson is one of the few people to play against all the great centers except Wilt and Kareem.

An incredible two way player. One of the greatest centres and I watched videos from years back of him posterising or outplaying Hakeem and Shaq, but we never see those videos🤔. Pure athleticism, strength and speed. Incredible defence also. Imagine if this guy had an aggressive character and was not such a nice guy. He would be even more ruthless. The Spurs were 21-61 the season before he arrived, then 56-26 when he arrived the following season. Some people don’t even know that his teammates weren’t that good for a majority of his prime career. Salute to the Admiral, David Robinson. My favourite centre of all time

You don't see those because they lead nowhere. You Robinson/Spurs fans go gathering up all the moral victories you can to justify him being better than his contemporaries, especially Hakeem. In the 95 WCF the gauntlet was thrown down and he had a seven game series to show his biggest rival that he was better. You know the truth and he failed to show up, which resulted in Hakeem embarrassing him all series long in just 6 games.

Not only did he outscore him by an average of 11 pts in that series, he basically snatched that mvp from David, and showed him how to finish the season like an MVP by steamrolling him on his way to winning the NBA title and Finals MVP against Shaq. David was a great player no doubt, but Hakeem showed him and world that he could go another gear that David couldn't. Also, they have both dunked on each other, so you can bring it up as much as you want, but don't forget to mention that Hakeem did it to him also.

David was a great center (player overall) and is definitely a classy, intelligent and generous individual. What's really kind of amazing and sad to be honest is that this video shows great footage of David Robinson's career minus the night he won the MVP prior to playing the Rockets. I understand though. Hakeem Olajuwon did embarrass David on the same night the former Spurs star was presented with the 1994-95 NBA MVP Award!

Making this short but 'The Admiral' #50 was one of my fave players (3 way tie, Scottie Pippen and Dominique Wilkins were the other two) in that era and when he retired... he funded and built a private school in the San Antonio era and gave so much of what YHWH blessed him with financially and non-financially. David is a Believer and acted accordingly. Along with Avery Johnson and others, they set the culture in San Antonio which carried through for decades (watch BTM's video on Rodman, why he didn't last long with the Spurs). The Tim Duncan era exemplified this long-lasting culture and Coach 'Pop' has always upheld it. He was integral to helping build that culture. In San Antonio it's not just about developing the player but about building, mentoring, discipling the man. The game is a job but real life happens when the cameras ae turned off. The Admiral continues to be a great ambassador for the Spurs organization but he was one of the most athletic NASTY bag of moves for a Center ever... and yes, he could sink free throws, especially when they mattered.

David Robinson is among my top 20 centers. that also includes Shaquille O'Neal, Alonzo Mourning, Jabar, Tim Duncan, Bill Russel, Wilt Chamberlain, Moses Malone, Patrick Ewing, Mutambo, Rik Smits, Ben Wallace, Bob McAdoo, Wes Unseld, Robert Parish, Bill Walton, Dave Cowens, Artis Gilmore, Nate Thurmond, Chris Webber. These centers are in my opinion are simply great.

Shaq was a freshman at LSU when Dave was a rookie in the NBA, and this dude's talking about when he was 15 he got snubbed by David at the Alamodome (which the Spurs started playing at during Shaq's 2nd year in the NBA). I'm telling you guy's when David first came into the league he transformed our entire team and city he was dominating every aspect of the game. You've Never seen energy like this especially from a big man so...to me growing up in the early '90s he was more like a superhero than a basketball player. He's ONLY guy I've ever seen block a point blank dunk by Jordan in his prime...no one did Jordan like that back than.. let's just say that. Dave led us to our first title. God bless him.

The admiral was amazing. Always loved him and what the spurs started back then. They're a classy organization and have been cause he started it i believe(my opinion) but the spurs overall are a great organization and wished Leonard stayed to continue that tradition but i believe the spurs will be back if pop picks the right successor to him

The dude is on NBA’s 50 & 75 team… how can he be considered under rated if he made both teams??? That is ultimate respect. They included undeserving chumps like Caramelo, street clothes, West Brick, choke god, & Chokeden… on the 75th team when dudes who really deserved to make the cut were excluded: Ben Wallace, Chauncey Billups, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobli, Robert Horry… great NBA players who didn’t bus ride Lebron to get titles and who didn’t ball hog to get stats… these guys played real important roles to make their teams winners. Robert Horry has 7 rings… how the hell did he not make the list??? 7 is more than Jordan… Horry wasn’t the MAN, but it’s no coincidence all those teams won with him… same with Parker and ginobli, and that 2004 pistons championship team has absolutely no representative on the 75th team… that’s a disgrace by the voters of that team… that’s disrespect for the best two players of that squad. So considering those snubs, David Robinson is not disrespected at all. He’s just in the shadow of actual great players like Duncan and Hakeem & Shaq which is no shame.
