The game is modernizing and all timer records are being broken every day by today's Era of athletes.... But the fact Stockton's assist record is STILL unattainable after all these years shows how masterful of a facilitator he was..
@davidplummer2619
@davidplummer2619 2 жыл бұрын
This no more an era of athletes than any other -- if by 'athlete' you mean, as most unfortunately do, runs fast, jumps high. By that definition there are many stars who couldn't play in today's league: Curry, Durant, Doncic, Joker, Harden, Chris Paul, etc. Fortunately for the NBA and its fans and these guys above, athleticism isn't limited to track and field criteria.

@@jimries625 a ring is probably the last thing to take into account when considering individual legacy. Their are plenty of guys that have several rings that werent half the player but were on some championship teams with some great players. Where a star player goes they often build around that player and spend millions bringing in the best from around the league but sometimes every team cant do that and great players arent always on one of those teams that can get the top talent to buy championships. MJ only adds to his greatness because of what he did to win those rings had he performed the same way and they somehow lost( which is very possible) it shouldn't change his standing as the best. It takes the entire team and coaching staff and ownership to win not just one guy. Karl Malone is the second leading scorer of all time but I guess he is a joke because he never got a ring? Dan Marino never won a superbowl and neither did the best back of all time Barry Sanders and not even 5 rings could put the 2nd best back ahead of Barry.

Reliable, efficient, and so damn fun to watch and cheer for. When I see clips and highlights of the Jazz from back then, it hits every good nostalgia nerve I have. Stockton retired the year I graduated high school and it felt like my childhood was officially over. I don’t think there will ever be another player like John Stockton.

I hope that some younger people see this. They watch highlight films and don't think that Stockon was any good. I understand this. Watching Stockton play, he wouldn't go on any runs, score a lot of points, or do anything fancy. He just quietly went about his business and efficiently racked up points and assists all game long. Gary Payton hit it exactly. You don't think that he's doing anything special till the 4th quarter rolls around and he's already got like 18 points and 9 assists with 2 steals. By the end of the game he's at 24, 14, and 4. The guy was good in the clutch too. But the absolute BEST part of watching Stockton play back in the day was that he was/and still is the ONLY point guard who would sets screens every game and Stockton would lay people out. I've seen Stockton just level guys that were 10 to 12 inches taller than him and who out weighed him by 40 to 60 pounds. Half the time guys were trying to fight Stockton afterwards or they were knocked silly. Most of the time Stockton wouldn't even move on those screens. It was like these guys were running into a brick wall. For a man whose build doesn't look like anything special, and who wasn't blessed with explosive athleticism, Stockton was deceptively strong.

Growing up in the 90s as I did, John Stockton was the player I most feared after Michael. Dude was unstoppable. Yes, he'd only score 18 points, but he'd get 15 assists, 2 steals, hit a dagger 3PT, go 5/5 from the line, disrupt every play on defense, harass the PG, and then would always find a way to get his team points of offense. I was of course a Sonics fan, so we saw Stockton a lot. I think that's part of why he's under-rated. No one saw him play. To me, I hated playing the Jazz, because it'd mean going up against John Stockton. He was unstoppable. And again, he'd score 12 points. But he was the main factor in his team winning. And I think he would compliment any other player's game.

But not Malone who was clearly the dominant force carrying that team with career averages of 25 and 10. If Malone had a complimentary true co-star close to his caliber in place of Stockton, they would've won a title or two. It's funny that you mention the dribbling between his legs. I can only remember seeing it happen a few times and it was because someone was swiping at the ball and he needed to do it to protect the ball. When you think about it. You see someones hand is going for a steal, and you have to realize that a steal is coming, get your legs in the right position, and move the ball into the perfect angle in your hand to make that between the legs dribble happen all in fraction of a second. It's damn impressive.

To me what Really pushed him over the top(along with being the all time goat in steals and assists) was how his tiny frame would set picks on giant players(we are talking Shaq/Chuck etc) and he would set killer ones. Dude was still doing that when he had back problems(probably from those picks) Dude gave everything he had and didn't want the attention. Plus when they stopped the game when he set the all time steals(I think it was that and not assists) and the ref gave him the ball that set the record....He threw it back to the ref and said "Lets Play Ball". Absolute Legend!!!!!!!!!! P.S. Am I picking Nash and Magic over him for a 8 year period(Yep) But if I wanted someone who was gonna play 15 years at the highest and most professional level and wasn't gonna ask the team to break the bank(In fact gave the team discounts). BTM Basketball Time Machine, great video buddy... Forget just for a moment he was the assist leader in all the 90's, he was every year top 3 in steals... What I want to mentionate here is the fact that he was, in my humble opinion, the best player in the Jazz franchise history over Karl Malone, because like Jordan, he was the player who made the clutch plays for his team, his mental toughness and his determination lead the Jazz for a two consecutive NBA Finals against the Bulls, true they didn't win, but the effort to do so in a conference with the Sonics, Rockets, Lakers and Spurs is something to appriciate... My favourite point guard of all-time is Magic, but Stockton was the pure best point guard i've ever seen, like MJ, in defense he had the right hand in the place to avoid the opponent give a good pass, excellent in double teaming big guys at the right time that gets him a steal, fisically tough like a small forward, always dribling the ball until he was sure to make the pass right, great awareness passing the ball, maybe he wasn't Isiah, or Tiny Tim dribling the ball, but he was so good and confident handling the ball like no other, I am a Bulls fan, I grew up watching the 90's NBA, I hated the Jazz back then, and the player that I fear the most was John Stockton, he was the silent killer in the court, and over the years, remembering those days I just appreciate him, because he was a great player and a great competitor. And he was not overrated, without him, that Jazz franchise has been a mediocre team, period.

Disagree. Let's not even talk about the fact that Stockton has ZERO championships. This one stat proves that Magic was better than Stockton. In 190 playoff games, Magic had 2,346 assists. In 182 playoff games, Stockton had 1,839 assists. That means that if Stockton had played in 8 more playoff games, he would have to average (AVERAGE!!!) over 63 assists per game to equal Magic's output. The moral of the story, Magic played better when the games mattered the most. Stockton did not. End of discussion.

Meaning this dude is a complete player, stockton could have been a 22 ppg somewhere else but he got in with malone, let him do all the heavy lifting, stockton was the QB. I hated his little ass(laker fan) and i STILL hate his little ass, but facts is facts and Stockton was the truth. No one, not your favorite player, not my favorite player, not SKip and Shannon's favorite player, no Point God, none of these other motherfuckers in the league is holding a candle to Stockton at that position.

That last clip said it. You were worried about every other way Stockton could beat you besides scoring. But if you gave it up he’d score on you. Not only that you got the ball back and he’s top 10 in steals all time. And then get himself another assist. Ruthless.

Many years ago, I saw an interview with Karl Malone talking about Stockton and how one day, it was just the two of them in the gym working out. Stock said, "Hey Karl, watch this" and went up and dunked the ball. Just to show Malone that he could. Stock would never do that in a game, of course, because for him, a dunk was not a high percentage shot. And he would never try a dunk that he might miss when he could take the guaranteed lay up. But he wanted Malone to know that he could. My recollection of the story might be a bit off, it was a very long time ago, but that's the way that I remember it. And it fits perfectly with Stock. All business, no flash.

Don't forget, Magic is the all time playoff assists leader with 2,346 in 190 games for a 12.1 assist per game average. Stockton is in third place with 1,839 assists in 190 games for a 10.1 assist per game average. In fact, if Stockton were to have played in 8 more playoff games (to equal Magic's 190 games played), he would have to average over 63 assists per game just to equal Magic's output. That is how much better Magic was than Stockton.

@@johnbrownwasright true, but in fairness, the Lakers had much more talent than the Jazz (overall). Magic could turn it up a notch, just like Larry and Michael and nowadays Seth, Klay, etc. in stockton's case, there wasn't enough firepower, i.e.. (see Mark No O Eaton ) always wondered how much better stockton's numbers would be if they had an offensive force in the middle. the Sixers finally won a championship once moses malone showed up to help Julius.

@@sicfrynut I hear what you're saying. However, it just proves my point that Magic was better. Stockton did not make those around him better. I would even go as far as saying that The Mailman made Stockton better rather than the other way around. I mean, Stockton did play with Hall of Famer Adrian Dantley and all stars like Rickey Green, Tom Chambers, Jeff Hornacek, John Starks, Kelly Tripucka, Danny Manning, Mark Jackson and even Mark Eaton. Say what you will about Mark Eaton, but he was a defensive power house. The Jazz front office did what they could, but Stockton just isn't good enough to make the players around him better. I mean, honestly, if you had the first pick in a playground game, would you choose Magic or Stockton? If I wanted to win, I would choose Magic all day.

I remember listening to the great Bob Cousy telling the late great Tommy Heinsohn how incredible of a point guard John Stockton was. He kept talking about how he had no wasted movement, great passer, perfect point guard; probably Stockton's second year. He kept saying that he would be one of the best ever. Of course Tommy was telling Cousy that Cousy was the best ever. It almost irritated Tommy that Cousy was saying that because of the respect that Tommy had for Cousy. A great player John Stockton was, and Cousy and Tommy were incredible in their day too.
