So basically what you’re saying is that John Stockton is the all time assist leader only because of Jerry Sloan and Karl Malone and that anyone can pass it to Malone in the post. He’s a good passer, not a great one. I’m gonna use Derek Fisher as an example here because he was a good, not great passer. Put Fisher in Sloan’s system and give him Karl Malone and he’d have 5000 more assists than Magic Johnson? That’s not happening. You’re not wrong that Stockton’s stats were elevated by his system, but you can’t take just anyone and duplicate that amount of success. How many players can play 16 seasons of 82 games? Not many. Most players have stats elevated by their systems. Are James Harden’s scoring stats elevated by his system? Were Steve Nash’s assists elevated by Phoenix’s seven second or less offense? The problem with this video is you can take the argument you’re using and apply it to any all time great player.

The system argument could also be applied to players such as Jordan and Kobe, both played for the majority of their careers in Triangle offense, which is a system that favoured scoring guards and wings just as the Stockton Jazz system favoured pass-first point guards. That being said, are they considered worse scorers than (let's say) KD or T-Mac? Of course not. John Stockton is rated just as high as he should be, nor should be considered a one-trick pony for making the easy pass to Karl Malone in the post. He was one of the greatest passers ever in the open floor and in traffic, as well as one of the greatest floor generals for all-time great off-ball players such as Jeff Hornacek.

Gary Payton (along with maybe Walt Clyde Frazier and someone else I’m forgetting) is the best defensive PG (and one of the best offensive, he just played too long which watered down his numbers) ever. @@swpdisciple Jason Kidd has massive impact on the defensive end, for a point guard, which is very rare for any guard. I don't value specific moments a whole bunch, because they're only a few games out of hundreds of games we can use as sample size. Now, the reason why I think of Jason Kidd very highly on the defensive end is because I value impact, and Jason Kidd got a below average Nets team, on the defensive end, to one of the best defensive teams in the league, with little to no roster changes, and Jason was the biggest reason to why they improves drastically.

(Copied but it's facts.)

He even mentions that Stockton was a great scorer in college, yet for some reason never considers the possibility that while the system may have inflated Stocktons assists, it also could have easily decreased his scoring. Given how great of a shooter Stockton was, along with how well he could drive to the rim and finish, I have no doubt that if he were asked to be a scorer he could have put up 20/8 seasons on good efficiency. Stockton was a great passer and a great shooter/good scorer. He did what he was asked to do. Put him in a system where he's asked to be a combo guard and he'd be a different, but equally great player. He could score, pass, and defend no matter what system he played in or who he played with. To be fair as a Bulls fan you should know that it was actually the Bulls, with Rodman, twice that won vs the Jazz in a crazy hard fought series. Had the juggernaut Bulls and MJ not exist, you most likely wouldnt have made this video because they would sure as fucking hell had at least one or two chips. Especially that 98 season, the Jazz could seriously only be stopped by MJ. They won vs the Lakers with Shaq, Eddie Jones, Grant, Van Exel, Fox and Kobe Bryant off the bench, the Spurs with Tim Duncan and Robinson and in the CF vs the Rockets team with Olajuwon, Barkley, Willis and Drexler. Seriously cant say they are overrated my dude and Stockton either who was just as important during these series as Karl Malone feeding the MVP of the league. If you could add a minus on Stockton its the fact that he couldnt pass with his left which is basically why they lost vs the Bulls(Phil Jackson told his team to constantly leave the left side open so the only way he could go is to his off-hand). But even with such a huge negative, he still somehow got most of his passes off on incredible rate.

Down 3, score two quick points then strip Malone at the other so that he can hit the series-winning shot. Greatest of all time. Other times, Jordan just put his opponents to bed without getting close to game 7. Lebron could carry his team a certain extent like that 16-point 4th quarter vs. 2013 Spurs or in 2016 Finals vs. GSW but he just isn't built to carry that much load. He had to get bailed out by Ray Allen and Bosh in 2013 (after missing a 3) and Kyrie had to step up and hit one of the most clutch 3's in nba history. There is source data that shows the pg before John Stockton, Rickey Green did have inflated numbers in Utah that dipped before/after his time in Utah. 3. A few points to consider. 1. Adrian Dantley was traded not because Frank Layden wanted Stockton to be an assist king. Adrian Dantley was traded because he was trying to teach Karl Malone not to put in a full effort in every game that was played. And to only go full in on the most important games in the Reg Season. 2 The system of the Jazz was to create assists to who ever was the main passer may be accurate until you consider that every team had a main passer on other teams. That was how the game was played back then. They give their main point guard the responsibility of setting up the offensive play. Much like QBs in the NFL you generally have one guy in charge of setting up the play. So according to logic it`s like saying Tom Brady is not the goat because passing is easier than catching and scoring in the NFL. 3. To say that Karl inflated John`s assists. And then you show that John assists were not impacted on the few games that John played without Karl. That should be forth telling that if John needed Malone so much to inflate his assists so much. Then it would show that John`s assists would have been way down on those games. 4. When you say John`s assists were made by easy passes is a half truth. When something seems easy the trick is to make it look that way. Many of John`s assists came from basic passes but the timing and the accuracy of John`s were always on point. John was a master of knowing of where everyone was on the court at all times. But he also knew what everyone was doing at all times. Many players that played with John said that the one thing that they learned was to always keep their hands up and be ready for the pass to come their way. Because John would see them open even when they did not know that they were that open. The question that I would counter you argument is what would you rather have as a passer. One who makes the easier pass or the one who makes the showboat pass when both accounts for the same credentials? 5. Finally when it comes to John Stockton I currently rank him as 3rd all time. I have Magic Johnson 1 and Oscar Robertson 2. Isiah Thomas and John are cutting it razor thin. It depends on what you value more. An ultimate play maker that can run any play to as close to perfection as possible in John Stockton? Or a play much like Magic that can impact the game at all levels and can switch between anything in a blink of an eye in Isiah Thomas. Magic get the all time based on he could possibly guard and play 1 through 5. And can go from being a play maker to scorer seamlessly. The Big O was a stat stuffer and unfortunately I never saw him play. But hearing the stories that not only did Oscar average a triple double those triple doubles lead his team to winning a title for the Bucks in there expansion year. Also so when MJ was young in his career the legends compares Michael to a more athletic version of Oscar.

I take umbrage with a few of your points here. First, being a good *passer* does not make somebody a good *playmaker*, and good passing doesn't always correlate to making lots of assists. Donovan Mitchell can hit flashier passes than anyone else on the Jazz, from insane one-handed cross-court passes to behind-the-back no-lookers, but he averages way fewer assists per 36 than Joe Ingles, who mainly gets his assists through the pick-and-roll. That's because although Joe is not as gifted as a passer, he always throws whatever the best pass at the time is. Sure, it's not going to be as flashy as something like a cross-court touch pass, but there's a reason why the Ingles passfake is such an incredibly dangerous play for a guy who's so damn slow-footed. He always makes the correct read when determining whether or not he wants to lay it up or lob to Gobert. Being a good decisionmaker is much more important than being a good passer in generating quality looks at the basket, and John Stockton was probably the best pick-and-roll ballhandler ever. You said it yourself - his bread and butter is the same Stockton - Malone pick-and-roll almost every time down the floor, the reason it was so deadly was not just that Malone was a good scorer, or else other teams would be able to play the passing lanes and snipe the ball as soon as it left Stockton's hands. And in spite of the fact that he holds a commanding lead for all-time assists, he ranks only in all time turnovers. That means that he moves the ball to someone not named Malone when the play is closed off, or he lays the ball in, or shoots it himself. He makes the right pass every time. Stockton doesn't go for the super flashy passes, he just makes stable, consistent, and fundamentally correct reads, even under immense amounts of pressure.

Stockton would do whatever it took to win games, often being the smallest guy on the court but having the most impact on the defensive end, and was often the best shooter on the team but understood how to play the team game. Just because he didn't win an MVP, or go for triple-doubles, doesn't mean he's not in the conversation for one of the Top 5 point guards of all time.

if you do a ton of research just to prove someone is overrated, it kind of comes of as if you were looking for reasons to say he was overrated. look at his career for what it is. hes the all time assists and steals leader, and would have won a chip if jordan's bulls didn't dominate the 90s (just like barkley, ewing and others didnt win a chip) amazing passer, decent defender who got lots of steals, and he was an efficient scorer. didn't shoot any more than he needed to. this seems like its something personal against stockton. i can probably come up with 10 other players that didn't win chips that would qualify as being more overrated. many of them currently play in the league.

The problem with this video is that nothing can or should be taken away from this man's greatness as a basketball player. Every great player in NBA history is a product of the system that they played in. Some of the greatest players to ever lace up their shoes will say the systems that they played in allowed them to be the players that they ultimately became. Outside of all of that though you have to have the talent to perform each and every night which this man did. This man is the all-time leader in assists and steals and is probably one of the most durable players in NBA history. If anyone deserves the overrated claim it's not John Stockton.

First of all, I love your videos. I also agree with some points, like he did not have to make many tricky passes and the system is what helped him get more assists. On the flip side, he was an elite defender and the system did not create that or his steals total. Based on these premises Scotty Pippen then must be hugely overrated. He benefited clearly from the Triangle offense and playing with the a guy who most people believe is the GOAT. I find many things to do these to be comparable. I think there has been many more impactful point guards in NBA history, but Stockton would still have to be at least top 5-10

To me, the points you make are not necessarily inaccurate as observations, but the conclusion you’re drawing from those points doesn’t necessarily follow. You say that Karl Malone provided him with an assist factory, and that Malone was clearly very talented independent of Stockton’s influence. But those things don’t necessarily detract from Stockton. I think, perhaps more than anything, Stockton was an intelligent player, and part of intelligence is adapting in some sense to circumstances. Stockton obviously recognized Malone’s capabilities and so he fed him the ball and did what he could to improve Malone’s game. Stockton was obviously a very capable shooter; his career FG% is above 50%, and his career 3PT% was near 38%. As you mentioned, he was a more dominant scorer in college. In my view, you can just as easily conclude that his ability to adapt his game and be more of a facilitator attests to his overall high talent level. Talent isn’t just about the ability to do one thing, but to learn new things. He adjusted his game once he realized the potential of Malone. Also, saying that Malone was independently talented doesn’t really speak against Stockton’s individual talent. Lots of talented players have played with other talented players. I think it’s clear that these two had good chemistry because of Stockton’s willingness and ability to adapt his game, but they both would’ve been successful in other contexts. The fact that they never won a championship obviously is seen as evidence of their lack of greatness. But you have to remember the competition they faced too.

Well, CP3 is basically a modern day Isiah Thomas so that would make sense. He’s not a better 3 point shooter though. Defense is probably a push. I’m fine with CP3 being perceived as better but then again, in their own time, it’s debatable that the original IT was perceived as better than Stockton (which sounds funny to say). People forget they’re about the same age. In things like this and NBA Storyteller’s vid, I’m much more interested in why people dislike Stockton instead of the evidence. Especially when he and Malone barely played games apart and when that happened Malone was like 13 years in the league. I get what he was trying to do...anchor Malone in the argument to see who needed who but look at Nash/Stoudamire...same situation. Stoudamire was in the running for MVP that first year with the Knicks in 2010 (Raymond Felton was like a borderline all star) his numbers were the same except the shooting percentage was like 50% instead of the 55% with Nash but that was because of lost athleticism with his knees. Historically big men just do what they do. That’s why they should be on separate lists all-time. I think a better way to look at Stockton is how did he perform in the clutch and against other top level guards.
@Terror832
@Terror832 4 жыл бұрын
One of the knocks about Stockton is that he lacked a “second gear”. I mean he was never a natural scorer and so when the Jazz needed him the most it’s usually dump it off to Malone and hope he makes it. It’s why Malone always get the blame for their shortcomings. Chris Paul has had plenty of moments where he can single handedly will a team to victory.

People are heated in the comments, but it's hard to deny that Stockton didn't "farm" assists with the help of Malone. This is a big reason of why he's the assist leader, and him being the assist leader is one of the main reason why some people mention him and put him on some lists. You are allowed to get assists this way, no doubt, but a lot of you are in denial and think he's the best playmaker in the history of the NBA.
