4:35 I was at this game. It was the last night of the ‘04 regular season and the Lakers needed a win to clinch the Pacific Division title. We (Blazers and fans) did not want that to happen. On top of that the Blazers were not headed to the playoffs and so this was our statement game to end the year on a high note. Us Blazers fans have always prided ourselves on our home crowd advantage but this night there were so many Lakers fans in the crowd it was sickening. Our “Kobe stopper” Ruben Patterson had just missed two free throws that could have iced the game on the Blazers previous possession at the end of regulation, but instead he proceeds to give the Lakers a chance to tie and has both the game-tying shot and the game-winner sunk in his face in double OT. If you look and listen closely you’ll see so many fans cheering when Kobe drains those shots that I could’ve swore I was at a neutral site and not in the Rose Garden. I’ll never be able to stand the Lakers but I always had to tip my cap to that man Kobe Bryant, he was not only legendary on the court but he turned parts of rival fan bases against their own hometown teams. When I think of him passing I reflect on that night quite a lot. Absolutely transcendent.
