Knicks began 97-98 with big aspirations but it all went up in smoke when Patrick Ewing fractured his wrist less than 2 months into the season.

When people talk the best big men, they always leave Patrick Ewing out which is unfortunate. He was a great player

@Muzzy_664 ай бұрын
@@AnthonyScarpa-er3sq People still talk about guys like Stockton, Malone, Barkley though. I think in Ewing's case he was just very unfortunate to have played in an era filled with so many historically great big men. First of all you had Hakeem (2x MVP, 2x DPOTY, 2x Champ), Robinson (1x MVP, 1x DPOTY, 2x Champ) and Shaq (1x MVP, 4x Champ) - they are probably all top 6 all-time centers. Then on top of that defensively you had Mutombo (4x DPOTY) and Mourning (2x DPOTY, 1x Champ). So that's 5 guys during the era who were either all-time great overall centers or all-time great defensive centers. Then you have Ewing. He was an elite offensive player but never won an MVP. He was elite defensive player but never won DPOTY. He played on some very tough and competitive teams, made multiple NBA finals, but never got a ring. He's the ultimate example of old saying that "history never remembers who finishes 2nd". So when people who never watched him play come back now and just look at the on-paper achievements, Ewing looks like a relatively insignificant player who put up some good numbers but won nothing. That's sad. I personally would consider Ewing a top 10 all-time center without question, and if a prime Ewing could have played in today's league I think he'd give guys like Embiid and Jokic a real hard time.

@@Muzzy_66 Yeah, Patrick Ewing probably played at the wrong era. But when the Knicks finally put quality pieces around him plus a above-average coach in 1996-98: - the league somewhat "intervened" to prevent the Knicks to face the Bulls in 1997 - injury bug hit him in 1998 As shared before, that 1999 Cinderella run by the Knicks was a fool's gold. Phil Jackson was reportedly waiting in the wings to replace Jeff van Gundy should the Knicks eliminated either within the first three rounds.
