That's right - physicality on defense and hand-checking are back in the NBA. Adam Silver decided offenses were way overpowered and decided to instruct the referees to not call fouls anymore after the All-Star break. In this video, BasketNews' Augustas Suliauskas analyzes how FIBA-like rules are affecting NBA players & why it is actually great for the league and the players themselves.

Love the new changes. It will make games more competitive. Since some players are being drafted from Europe and some American players end up in Europe, it would be nice to see NBA and EuroLeague closer resemble each other in terms of rules and officiating. This move by the NBA means they have moved on from the Steph Curry era and I'm glad to see that. Heck, if these changes didn't happen we would have eventually witnessed women like Caitlin Clark and Sabrina Ionescu compete and dominate in the NBA 😅. That would have been the final nail in the coffin to bring down the NBA altogether. I'm glad Adam Silver saw the writing on the wall and made the necessary changes.

No need to adopt all of them, just cancel the defensive 3 second rule and you'll reduce the amount of points by a huge amount. Having said that, the second biggest problem of the NBA beside bad defence is too much 3pt shooting, and this rule will just make the problem bigger.

@@alfredoladino9838Using totals for the agenda push instead of per game numbers isn't slick. The Lakers average the 3rd most FT attempts per game behind the Bucks (2) and the Magic (1). Why is that? Because the Magic and the Lakers are the teams that shoot the fewest 3s in the whole NBA. They take the most shots inside the paint, thereby drawing the most fouls.

It's absolutely a good thing. Games are much more interesting when they're closer and allowing a physical game lets the game remain closer for longer. Everyone assumes higher scoring = more exciting, but if a big chunk of the scoring comes from free throws and all the scoring leads to a 20+ point game in the 3rd quarter...it's just not good for fan interest or engagement. Let them play the game the way it was intended instead of from a standstill at a line on the floor.
@Smido83
@Smido83 Ай бұрын
To be fair... FTA were never the real problem. The lowest FTA per game seasons were ALL after 2010. All of them! As a comparison. In MJ's time the average FTA per season were between 27 and 30 FTA per game... In the 2020's its about 22-23. Same was true for fouls overall. 25 fouls per game in the 80's, 22.5 in the 90's, 19.7 so far in the 2020's The problem was allways the missing physicality. Now offenses have to adjust and either play through contact, or (like back in the day), force defenses to actually foul you to get to the line.

Yeah for the basketball world bringing back defense is great, however, the reason NBA allowed massive amounts of scoring is because since MJ, the NBA audience have dwindled and today it seems only the basketball world watches basketball. So NBA thought we need more "MJ"s (basically more scoring) to attract more audience. Even with Lebron being GOAT status has not expanded the audience past those who ususally watch basketball. Hence the ridiculous amount of scoring which annoyed the basketball world but it didnt attract more audience . The only reason media companies like Disney (via ESPN) and CBS (via Paramount) dump tons of cash on NBA and other sports is because they are losing out to the streaming media companies like Netflix, so the only cash cow revenue they can get is "live entertainment" ie sports. But NBA getting tons of money is not indication that the audience has expanded, it is result of internal media industry problems.

Problem is they are still not calling carrying, charging when they run through the defender lowering shoulder or shouldering, illegal screens not giving space of one step, moving screens/picks, traveling since they are letting them chose when to establish pivot foot regardless of rules, self passing when they dribble the ball forward to an area and go get it which is a self pass that is illegal, offensive three seconds, just so many things that make it not real basketball anymore.

The physicality of needed. The NBA needs drama. It needs wars, it needs rivalries.

It's not about scoring. It's about the flow of the game and allowing defenders to actually play

When the offensive player initiates contact it should not be a foul on the defense. As long as D is playing towards the ball and hands are vertical it should not be a foul.

Yanis runs into players regularly. The issue isn't fixed by not calling fouls. The refs should call the proper foul. Yanis for example should be called for charging at least 10 times per game. Which would eliminate him from playing the rest of the game. Just call the charge. Too easy.

Amazing decision, reminds me of the Dennis Rodman days, or the dirty pistons trying to deal with Jordan in his prime. Physical well earned points.

Many of this generation’s fans say game 7 of the 2016 finals was their favorite game of all time, a game that didn’t crack 100. I don’t blame the younger fans for not knowing what they’ve been missing since they didn’t grow up with solid basketball.

The refs are inconsistently inconsistent. Call ticky tack bump fouls one quarter and the next quarter let them WWE each other.

Honestly, I think it's bad practice to change the way rules are enforced without notifying the players and coaches. After all, a game is defined by the rules it enforces. The NBA has consistently struggled with inconsistent foul calling due to their negligence when defining boundaries for fouls.

As an NBA fan from the late 80s, 90s and early 2000s I found damn near every example you showed, to me were not fouls. Maybe that's why I haven't watched since the mid 2000s, also maybe the traveling no calls, oh and maybe the carrying no calls. Lol

Good. Maybe, in a few years, when they actually play ball this way for long enough for me to believe it, I'll start watching again.

Can you imagine whoever has insider information that Adam Silver wants to lower the nba scoring probably made a killing betting the under after the all-star break.

The nba should adapt to fiba rules, physicality and team ball. Today's nba are pure isolation on superstars to create. That is why in world cup the american sucks.

Let's hope it sticks. I stopped watching the NBA because its just offense. offense, and three pointers. So allowing the defense to defend is a step towards the right direction.

My take is they're not just trying to lower the scoring, they're also preparing the americans for the Olympics. Getting ready for the Fiba physicality.

1) stop all the stepback traveling nonsense 2) move the 3pt line back to 25ft. 3) withhold 25% of the player’s salary and team’s distribution and distribute based on team wins. 4) stop all the silly game stoppages like ref complaining and high fives after a FT.
