Mr.Walker: You visited the Bar I worked at in Chicago, which was the Ice Bar. I want to thank you for your generous tips. You literally put food on my table, and helped me survive during a difficult time. If I ever strike it rich I will find you and pay you back. I realize you probably wont ever read this, but cant think of another way to thank you. Thanks again, and good luck financially in your future.

I have been an Antoine Walker fan since he played at Kentucky. There was this charisma about this guy that I could not understand, yet I respected him. I have heard how generous he was with his money. I know some criticize him, but it's so easy to do that from the outside. I wish he did not recklessly spend all of his money, but he sincerely tried to help a lot of people - which is impossible to do. The people of Chicago should embrace this man for stepping forward and for him telling his story about how he lost just about all of his wealth. Marc Rover, thanks for sharing your story - you're a genuine individual.

Listening to the interview, Walker still doesn't seem to realize that it's HIS fault that he had a huge entourage. Why does Mom need a home with 10 bathrooms and an indoor pool? Why did you not interview a money manager before handing him the keys to your fortune? Walker deserves his punishment. Classes in basic Finance, Accounting and Economics will help these guys out. The bank doesn't give interest anymore. Only do real-estate if you are willing to learn the game, just like Mr. Walker learned the game of basketball. Just take one building and learn from your mistakes. You manage your money. Make one building work, and then duplicate the process. I give money to people who look like me, not my skin color, my hustle. I don't know a person in my life who can ask me for 100,000 dollars. If I depart with that type of money you will have a business plan in your hand, you will think you are on the shark tank!

This is why pro athletes go broke. They want to have an entourage of 25-50 around them all the time, and they also feel the need to show off how much money they have by buying all these luxury but unnecessary items. Why spend millions on a bunch of exotic cars just to park them on your driveway? Buying nice clothes is fine but it becomes ridiculous when you start buying these expensive custom tailored suit just to wear it maybe once or twice. It's good to take care of their close family and buying them a new home in a safer neighborhood to get them out of the ghetto. It's fine to help a sibling or even a cousin through college and maybe reward them with a affordable car if they don't have one. It's fine to buy parents a nice car and house. But it's foolish to try to take care of distance relatives who happens to appear before the ink even dries. It's stupid and idiotic to have a large group entourage around all the time and support them daily. It's fine to pay for a trip with a few close friends on special occasions. Only keep friends who are genuine and honest, have your best interest in mind and will say no and even argue with you because they have your best interest in mind. Many athletes believe that if they sign a one million dollar contract they have a million dollars to spend. But in reality, they have about half of that from taxes and percentages going to other expenses such as agent. A lot of athletes and rappers feel the need to support and provide money or lavished items to the people in their hood. Another major factor is the culture that is deeply embedded in the ghetto black community. Many black athletes or rappers believes that if they have a lot of money, they should buy things to show people that they are rich. Buying a substantial amount of expensive jewelries, multiple exotic cars with rims and custom items, and many more ridiculous lavished items that they truly do not need. I remember a manager in the Rap industry saying that majority of rappers will go buy expensive jewelries and all these lavished items as soon as they sign a record deal, and not have enough money by the time the first rent comes.

Sad to hear his story, but you don’t need to show your wealth when you are nba star. Period. Everyone know you have money, even if you would say you don’t.:) You don’t play God’s role. You can’t help everyone, you are not here to help everyone. You need to learn when to stop, spent, and say no. You hang out with people that have money, so you don’t need to pay for them. You need to value money. You do not invest your hard earned money listening many advisers. You can’t advise me about investment of millions and you are still in damn chair that cost 300$ in local store, and you work for bank at low level. If you want to give a try, then invest a million and see what’s going on with the money. If you see return is sh.... or so, pull out money. People will tell you everything you want to hear, just to get you into the game. Money doesn’t grow on the tree, so any financial adviser that tell you about millions in returns is pure lie. There’s no shame to be careful and mindful with expenses. When you stop playing basketball, you will have a tons of free time to think of what you want to do in your life. You don’t play the game you don’t know. Easy to say, hard to do, but that is a life you need to challenge.

There was a time when Antoine Walker was called the " future " of the Celtics, and the organization paid him like he was already, by 1999, a " hall of fame " type player; I had watched him at Kentucky and was genuinely impressed with his game, though his shot selection was very suspect, along with his lack of conditioning in the off-season. His first three seasons were the best of his career, since after that, he practically gave up on rebounding and his pathological obsession with the 3pt shot and it's consequences was very frustrating. I say these things since all the talking heads in the media can focus on is how he lost his money by being extremely careless and NOT listening to his financial advisor's....but they NEVER talk about the reasons NO TEAM would sign him after 2008. He had a terrible work ethic, and a negative impact on his teammates due to his selfishness...especially when he was in Boston. He had the tools, could create and distribute the ball exceedingly well for a guy his size(6'9 240-250lbs.) and rebounded well during his first three seasons. Then he drifted further away from the basket, which exposed his terrible shooting, and " isolation " plays became the de facto strategy. It took some time, but Boston had to trade him, and people in Boston kept saying: " That's all we could get for him? " Yes, since most GM's knew by then that Walker simply wasn't a great player...he was just advertised as such since NBA basketball by the mid 1990's was painful to watch. I hope he's resolved his financial problems, but he turned down advice, got lazy and eventually became ostracized from the NBA. A waste of a once promising future.

“Trust” is a very dirty word when it comes to millions of dollars. When you make the kind of money these pro athletes make in a relatively short period of time, you have to take an active hand in managing your own money. Money amplifies the flaws you already have as a person. The sooner you realize that, the easier it is to combat and defeat it.

Absentee ownership never work. People MUST oversee everything that need to be done, never hire workers to do that for you then turn a blind eye to what needed to be done.

Eric Maurer basketball is more than just putting a ball in a basket these players have to train & workout daily even waking up at 5am. NBA teams play 82 games 41 home & 41 away games. They travel, being a pro athlete is tougher than runnin a business cuz their bodies take a serious beatings & they constantly get criticized by media & groupies Gold diggers throw themselves at so these guys

What he said at the end about helping people who can't help him, soo true. I was never a millionaire but have made some thousandaire mistakes helping family. If you become a millionaire be prepared to keep a shotgun and a Doberman at your side, and don't trust yourself with giving any money away. Make people work for it...."on your knee's" 😆 that pride will make them walk away or they gonna humble themselves to get whatever happens next.

I’m a 6’4 African American from Atlanta. I played basketball when I was a kid, ymca, and some in high school. Everyone in my family was really expecting me to go to the NBA and they get a free ride. I fell out of love with the game, went to college, and now I work in the i.t. field in Vancouver Canada...far away from family with a comfortable $80,000 salary....far away from certain family members.

The Economist wrote that 60% of NBA players go broke post retirement (70% in the NFL!!) I'm not a wealth manager, but I can tell you real estate and especially private equity (start up nightclubs, car dealerships) etc. are high risk, but tangible/understandable to an athlete with no interest in education. What are bonds, yields, power of attorney and all that "boring shit"? Fuck it, lets play some X-Box and ball. Then dump every cent into absurd gambles and go bust. And then blame slavery.

The most important advice I would give anyone who made that kind of money is to: GET YOUR MONEY WORKING FOR YOU AND INSTEAD OF SPENDING YOUR MONEY LEARN HOW TO UTILIZE YOUR MONEY RATHER THAN SPEND YOUR MONEY. WHEN YOU SPEND YOUR MONEY YOU ARE ACTUALLY THROWING IT AWAY. WHEN YOU UTILIZE YOUR MONEY YOU ARE USING IT AND ALLOWING IT TO GROW.
