For those of you who have never been impacted by a major hurricane, know that it isn’t always feasible to evacuate. Interstates become parking lots and it can take ten hours to move 60 miles. People run out of gas waiting to move. The pumps run dry and it’s not possible to get fuel. You can easily be trapped in your car on the road 50 miles from home because you tried to leave and be in a worse position than if you had remained. Then there’s the cost. If you’re lucky enough to leave the area, every hotel within 200 miles is already full. You’ll find yourself in Georgia or South Carolina looking for a place to stay and still looking for a room. Meanwhile gas stations and hotels are price gouging, and you have to drive all the way into NC to stay in a hotel. That’s a lot of gas spent driving around for two days looking for a room and a lot of money for a hotel. And FEMA isn’t going to repay that. Meanwhile you’re stuck in another state for two weeks paying $120 per night for a hotel while you’re not making any money. Perhaps if the state had been smart enough to open the southbound lanes for northbound evacuations and FEMA wasn’t an underfunded mess that pays out significantly to residents who don’t live anywhere near the affected areas then this might not be a problem. But simply put, many people simply can’t afford to leave.

I completely understand what you are saying. Some people can only do what they can do.
@JewsonM3 сағат бұрын
They forgot to mention how the evacuation order came to some Florida residents at 9pm+ at night and by the time they could leave, the highway had so much traffic on it, they were forced to: Hurricane stuck on the road, or weathering it in their home. Not everybody stayed out of ignorance.
@Goaheaddoit8215 сағат бұрын
Lemme tell you, there are places EVERYWHERE to evacuate and hotels are letting people stay for free and churches and shelters and schools. There was no excuse to not evacuate, I left and my home was destroyed but my family and pets are safe, it was hard because we had no money but we still did it. My aunt stayed like a dummy and her house was flooded 6 ft with 5 cats and her daughter. And they are now traumatized and have nothing. My boyfriend was told to evacuate and did, and his house was okay but not his neighbors. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT’LL HAPPEN. People spread the message, if they say to mandatorily evacuate. EVACUATE.

@@jbrokeback Storm surge was not as bad due to it being to the south of Tampa, which can't be accurately known days in advance. I followed all coverage for the last week - not one forecast had it as anything more than a cat 3 over FL and then to 1 as it went over land and exiting as a tropical depression - right on the timeline expected. Worst case will ALWAYS be used because that is what is the worst possibility - by definition. I live in Louisiana and lost count of all the times weather "experts" cried wolf and were totally wrong or way over stated. Many don't believe a thing they say. No wonder people are reluctant to leave, get stuck on the freeway out of gas and then what? Go to a shelter where you have no rights while your home is being broken into, or have animals that would have to be left behind. Also if you leave you can be prevented from returning for days or longer. There are valid reasons for not evacuating.

She has section of shelves in her garage where she stores water, TP, baby wipes, some canned goods, her dog and cat food and other miscellaneous items. In her spare bedroom she has stacked totes with non perishable foods in them, paper plates, cups, plastic silverware. She makes sure she has special liners for her emergency potty, hand sanitizer, small bottles of propane for her camping stove, fresh batteries for lanterns, extra gas for generator. She has trained her 2 kitties to go in their carrier-in case she has to leave, dog just jumps in no problem. I worry when there is hurricane predicted where she lives, but she is prepared! @أفلاكالأفكار5 сағат бұрын
You are just ignorant and viscerally attacking people without having any clue what you're talking about. Evacuating isn't as clear and straightforward as you think. The experts have been wrong many times so sometimes the storm changes course suddenly and thus the place you went to to evacuate ends up being hit and the place you left was safe. Sometimes you just can't simply leave because the highways are completely jammed and being stuck in your car on a highway (especially on a bridge) is way more dangerous than being at your house. Some people just simply don't feel safe going to a shelter with thousands of randos who could steal your stuff at night when you're sleeping. Some people have been living through these storms for decades and feel that they have the experience to weather it or don't want their pets to die or don't want their house to be robbed when they're gone. And many other reasons. So please, instead of just knee-jerk saying THESE PEOPLE ARE SO STUPID, please take the time to actually put yourself in other people's shoes. Evacuating isn't always the safest option; it's a risk to go and it's a risk to stay and each person has to make that decision.
