1 in 5 Asian Americans in New York City reported experiencing physical attacks or assault in 2023, according to a study by the Asian American Foundation. Half of those that were surveyed reported encountering hate towards them because of race. NBC News' Ellison Barber sits down with some of the victims who share their experience.

Thank you for airing this story. It is true that a lot of Asians choose not to report hate crimes fearing it would bring shame and unnecessary attention to the family. We as a community need to change the mindset and educate our next generation the correct way to deal with this situation.

I am Asian and I can definitely say that in my culture there is an element of shame and not wanting to bring attention to ourselves (good or bad). Even more so as an immigrant in a western country or society. There is also an element of becoming used to discrimination. I am so used to being treated differently and have been made fun of and mocked that I simply don't do anything about it. Sad but it's true.

I live in San Francisco, and it’s not uncommon for a stranger to call me slurs when I am minding my business. Or for strangers to attempt to elbow or shoulder check me. For me I don’t bother reporting because I think “What’s the point? Nothing’s going to happen!”

Most Asian Americans don't report Hate Crime assaults. We usually mind our own business and avoid involving the police or government. So when they said that 1 in 5 Asian Americans have been victimized by Hate Crime ... the problem must be much, MUCH worse and widespread in the community than reported.

The irony is that the Asians were often times the most racist group among their neighors. The extent to which they reject the moral premise of racial equality and instead look down upon people with darker skin with contempt and suspicion is mind-boggling. The blacks should thank god they were enslaved by whites not Asians, for if the plantations were owned by Asian masters they would not be treated as cattles but cockroaches. Today most Asians are many times more mentally disposed to White-Supremacism than the actual Whites - they have no problem buttering up to the Whites, whose racism at their expense they complain very little. But when a black dude enters the scene, the reaction from an average Asian is usually more instinctively antagonistic than what's typical of a Klansman - the profound grudge is entrenched to the marrow. I denounce all forms of racism unconditionally, including all hate crimes against Asians. However emotionally it's hard to feel sympathy for an Asian guy being taken down a peg by a black, whom the Asian has probably spent his entire life looking down upon as no more human than a monkey. If racism is what you embrace and endorse, you don't get to complain when getting beaten in the very game whose morals you have no problem with. While it is certainly not a case of justice-being-served (as there is NO justice in racism whatsoever), it does feel somewhat satisfying at a certain level.

@casualsuede I'm Asian as well. I've lived in the US for over 40 years and I've experienced racism from both whites and blacks but more so from blacks. I've noticed American blacks tend to hate everyone and I believe it's from their upbringing or lack there of (not all of course), and sometimes it's from jealousy. This is why most crimes are committed by this group. It's a serious situation for this community that they don't want to fix, and when their own addresses the problem, they get called Uncle Tom's and other names. It's a hopeless case. To @DMaN333v. Yes, racism is prevalent everywhere but when it becomes violent, that is on an another level, and it comes from only one culture in America (the 13%).

I lived in Texas for years and now living in NYC. I have never experienced racism from white people. The racism I have experienced is from black people. I was attacked by black women in two separate incidents. One of them happened in the subway platform and the black woman was arrested by the police. When the police officers asked her why she attacked me, she said it was because she is a single mom and was stressed at home with kids. So I suppose she saw me as an Asian woman as weak and can be picked on to vent her anger and frustration.

How about the COVID pandemic? They may retort. Aren't the Asians to blame for the pandemic? First of all, the Asians in the US are victims just like people of other ethnicities. Beside, who was the U S president who allowed US taxpayers' money to be used in gain-of-function research in China? Who was the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases that recommended supporting such research in China? None of the two responsible are Asians. For me, as an Asian-American, most of my racist encounters came from African/"Black" Americans. My Grandmother had horrible experiences from them, too. Hurt people really do hurt people. I remember my Grandmother telling me about how she was just walking peacefully around the neighborhood to only come across a home where a young "Black" girl would hurl such vicious words at her. Had I been alive during that time...Never mind all the times I'd hear "Black," Hispanic, or "White" Americans make fun of how they thought "Asians" sounded when they spoke their native language. And the irony that Chinese and Japanese martial arts influenced Hip-Hop culture is the cherry on top.🤣. A'mer-ca!

Because Sinophobic sentiment has hit new highs. People laugh at the Tom Cotton Hearing with Shuo Zi Chew, but that whole thing was indicative of how people feel now about Asian people and use politics to shield the hate. Just look at your shows/movies and how often Chinese/Asians are portrayed negatively in them. Look who has recently been the henchmen who get killed or a baddie that's just pure evil with no redeeming quality and sometimes funnily incompetent as well. Shang Chi, EEAO don't tackle any of these issues and quite frankly a droplet fighting against a wave. It doesn't help that Asian people also join in on the hate, thinking if they can simply identify themselves as not Chinese, they will be spared. People who do that truly don't understand racism and have no historical knowledge. Not to mention that when Asian people fight back, people jump us for doing so. Imo if you want to see if a people are oppressed you look at their right to use violence and it being socially acceptable or not.

@loyalbeaver9402

@@Digimonisbetterthanpokemon Why not? Because it won't work. 1, Asians don't have the numbers (blacks account for 14% of the population; Asians account for half of the number). 2, Asians don't have the poverty: they are economically far better off. 3, Asians don't have the sympathy - blacks were once enslaved, the Asians have no sob stories to match enslavement + Jim Crow Law. Race card is a play that only works when it taps into the White Guilt. Whites just don't feel that guilty about Asians. 4, Asians are associated with the wrong country: the largest Asian group is the Chinese and China is seen as America's existential threat (not to mention Covid); in comparison no black group is seen by default as the "enemies". You got to be seen as the genuinely wronged victims first before you have any card to play. The perception is just not there for the Asians. The race card could easily backfire: the more an Asian dude plays it the more he comes off as a Karen.

Asians have been facing racism in the US ever since they built the railroads in the 1800s, ever heard of the Chinese Exclusion Act or the Denver anti-Chinese riot that took out a whole Chinatown? Non-Chinese Asians still get lumped in and we're all treated like recent immigrants because of the way we're portrayed in movies and TV with heavy accents and racist background music

You seem to approve of this. So does that make it a right? It doesn't make blks any better, does it? Violent attacks on the innocent are an unspeakable act, and why attack Asians? Asians are the most peaceful group in this country. Would you like to be physically attacked in Asia for just being blk? I don't think so.

Many people are racist around the world, I think this is unavoidable, BUT acting on it is cowardly and a crime. Especially targeting someone weaker than you.
