This is discrimination and racism. Nothing to do with power and control. I've been through this same thing here in North Carolina 20 years ago in school. This happens all the time. You will never hear this happening to a kid from any other ethnic group. ( I think I gonna research this ) 🤔

@LadieKatieYes, rules like these do indeed constitute de facto racist policies. There’s absolutely no reason why a public high school should be making rules about what sort of hair style students can choose to wear. The only rules these students should subject to are the ones regarding safe and respectful behavior regarding the treatment of their teachers, classmates and school property.

personally I think that if there's going to be this kind of rule at all,, it needs to be backed up by some pretty comprehensive "no stones unturned" supporting arguments. Hairstyle is culture, end of story, and making a rule about hairstyle is cultural discrimination, end of story. There is no way to argue that hairstyle is not culture, and there is no way to argue that limiting hairstyle is not cultural discrimination.

Well I don’t necessarily see it as cultural….but no matter the case, question is why does hair matter? Like okay if you have 8 foot long hair running on the floor, it’s a safety issue of tripping people lol. But this case, what’s the harm? Do you Americans live in North Korea? Cuz over there, barbers are only allowed to like 10 hair styles lol. Yay American freedom. So free. Most freedom I’ve ever seen anywhere on earth lol *roll eyes*
@tsmspace
@tsmspace 9 ай бұрын
@@testaccount1055 it's not a debate, though, because of the definition of the word culture. all fashion IS culture, along with all other culture such as music, film, work practices, expectations for dress code at work/school, ,,, all expectations for behavior is culture, all behavior is also culture. The magnitude of the importance of the culture is what people debate,, that's not "important enough" culture. For example hair cut and dress code, is engineered cultural discrimination. By controlling these things, it's then easier to enforce other behaviors on people, because the magnitude of the enforcement is already "ice-broken". dresscode is specifically to ensure "kinds of people" and "kinds of behavior" are easier to prevent access to. In other words, dress-code was INVENTED as a discrimination practice. that's the definition of the word. --- whether or not it is considered acceptable discrimination or unacceptable and illegal is the question.

To understand the school district’s position, I would need to see the hairstyles the district references in its statement to understand how those comply with the policy and why this one doesn’t. (The example shown seemed to coincide with another example of one that doesn’t comply.) The hair looks neat and reasonably maintained. It looks like it’s kept up off the neck and ears, though I’m not sure why that’s necessary. There doesn’t appear to be a safety or hygiene issue so far as I can tell. It doesn’t appear to be a style that would interfere with someone’s education. Keeping him out of the classroom for this reason seems a bit much. The punishment isn’t proportional to the infraction.

There is nothing wrong with his hair. He is in compliance with their original dress code which does not mention the word length nor the phrase length when let down. He was suspended in August just before the CROWN Act Law was passed in September after a judge ruled in a previous court case brought against them that their dress code is discriminatory in regard to them suspending two black male students because of their Locs. One was a senior, who three months before graduation was told that he could not walk at his graduation unless he cut his Locs and the other student was his cousin a sophomore who was kicked out of the band. The senior, Deandre Arnold went to another school and graduated with his Locs. The school and the school district ignored the judge's ruling and suspended Darryl George for the same reason they suspended the two cousins in 2020. The school and the school district read the CROWN Act Law after it passed, saw that it didn't say anything about length, so, the school and the school district revised their dress code by adding the phrase length when let down to it. This was done to circumvent (get around) the CROWN Act so that they can continue to discriminate against black students (black male students in particular) regarding their hair.

This is nothing more than the school targeting this kid for fighting for his right to wear his hair the way he chooses. His hair isn't creating a disruption in anyone's education so why does he continue to be harassed by the school?

A kid that wants to get an education? No one or thing should stand in their way. Especially something as silly as hair. I hope he goes on to become a great attorney and stand up against these stupid laws/rules.

unless this was a military school with it's policies regarding uniform wear the school needs to BACK OFF regarding how this student wears his hair...just another reason for home schooling!!

It’s a stupid-looking hair style imo, but should not be cause for suspension.

Dr. Candace Matthews puts me in mind of the late Flo Kennedy...Anyway, I think Dr. Matthews mentions that this young man has hair from his ancestors (2:50) woven into his own style. That is a beautiful, proud tradition, a kind of homage: and...something to be honored and respected. I am Italian, and Caucasian and even I can totally understand why this young man feels and acts like this. Bravo, young bro!!

Shades of the 60’s and early 70’s! Texas hasn’t changed one iota since I was in HS.

This is completely one sided reporting. Show the hairstyle he’s allowed to wear and the one he isn’t. This is terrible parenting.

Um, you must not live in Texas. Small town Texas is some of the least racist people I have ever seen. I lived in Comifornia, Nevada and Arizona. It's because it's in the Houston area. A liberal strong area. Liberals are known in history to be racist. This is racially driven for sure. His hair is perfectly fine.

This education system man... ain't nothing wrong with having hair like that. It's when you get to unnatural and tacky hairstyles that's the issue. Gimme a break. This looks well groomed and kept up. Not just there.

How does hair have to do with being able to learn? Guess what it does not how come this wasn't an issue in college I seen a lot of folks from different backgrounds and races express their hair and it did not effect me nor my peers. This is Jim Crow vibes. People getting upset over how someone walks,eats speaks, hairstyles, how they sit in a chair are you really serious?
