This is an example of the institutionalized racism that will sadly always exist in United States schools. The young boy's mother mentioned that he is struggling academically. The school needs to shift its priorities to more important matters.

@@AndMiddle If this news is accurate, the school's approach is designed to wreck the kids confidence. Designed to indoctrinute inferiority. For his type of hair, this is literally the neatest and most professional look out there. The school might not understand black hair but that's their fault, they should stop being arrogant and learn it. And they should learn the culture too. Not respecting this hair is arrogance. School's make mistakes all the time and need to be called out by tough parents. I've seen gym teachers be tough on kids who documented and legally protected disabilities. The stupid gym teachers didn't read the sheet they were given and assumed the kid was normal. This could have wrecked their confidence but you bet the teacher was put in place because the legal protections were documented. It's great that Texas now has the legal protection on their books. I have found that he learned a great deal from this experience and respects many circumstances, institutions, and the boundaries of others because of this. After his hair grew, first, they wanted it out of his face, his mother pulled it back, then it became too long, she twisted it up and they still complained, he is now home school. NO ONE is going to make him cut his locs, "What does "Hair" have to do with education??? I can make a list of other issues the schools need to be looking at and address, and hair, isn't one of them. There were times that she came in with her hair in a fro that was not under control. I think they washed her hair but that was it. I spent almost half of the day combing it out to get the snarls out and then putting it into braids. They weren't fancy, but it kept her hair under control. @@milkthemoose1227 Clearly you have a closed mind. Black people's hair does not grow slower than any other races. Maybe YOURS does, but don't speak for everyone else. We don't need special products for our hair to grow, most of us have just been lied to and made to think that. You're comment about perms is irrelevant because not all of us wear them, it's not some rite of passage.

Oh jesus. NOBODY tells people how to wear their hair anymore. It is so shocking to hear discrimination like this is still going on. Im in the Denver area & my roommate's grandson is in high school and has currently adopted the mop of hair falling over his eyes, LoL. As a 65yo i dont find this particularly attractive, but it appears to be popular now and he is a good student who plays sports. So whatever fashion the kids like is what it is. For god's sake, well kept dreds is attractive and far from this style now, isnt it?

I went to HS in the 70’s. Guys wore their hair LONG. Long Hair Stephen became a nuclear engineer, worked at NASA. He’s retired now in Portugal. Hair’s not an obstacle to learning or success as it turns out.

Discrimination period!! I'm so sick of this against us especially our children, adults can and will defend and speak up but our children is being affected by racist actions and comments teach your children that racism is real and how to identify it 🙏 😢

My child is white and went to a High School that had hair length requirements for males. I knew the rules, followed the rules, and made sure he understood to follow the rules. Self-expression is fine as long as you don't impose it on institutions and others. Rules are rules regardless of race, religion, gender orientation, weight, height, or anything else. I understand that discrimination exist on many levels such as gender, race, religion, appearance, income level, and sometimes people's job. If I had to guess everyone reading this or posting has discriminated against someone for something sometime in their lifetime.

@@AndMiddle Let me know when it's other children besides Black children being harassed about their hair, these people have a special kind of sickness when it comes to Black children. Keep making the rules to suit them, then you abide by their sick rules they move the Goal post Every time. Racism/Discrimination is what wake some of these people up everyday. Policing Black bodies are their specialty, I hope he and no other Black child Ever cut their hair because of these sick pups. I dont think its racist, if a white guy had the same hairstyle he would also be in the same trouble. I think those hairstyles look ridiculous in a general sense (just like white people and the huge punk rock spikes, bowl cuts, etc), but if someone wants to look like that (whatever skin color they are) then by all means do it. I wouldn't let you represent my company, though. At a school, I don't see a problem having hair like that. If you are in a meeting, that haircut is just under the line of being reasonable. You look at those hairstyles where the people look like walking naval mines and thats completely inappropriate for a professional setting. I think the same way of mullets. So it isn't racist, its about taste and conduct.

I can hardly believe this is happening😢 His hair is incredibly beautiful, as is he. Apart from that, what sane person thinks it's right that teenagers (or anyone of any age) be restricted in how they choose to wear their hair? He is creatively, gorgeously complying with ridiculously arbitrary rules. The small-minded texans who are offended by his hairstyle must all be bald.

Sounds like the school is racist to me. This boy just wants to learn and proceed with his education and sports. The crown act does indeed apply and protect this young man! They need to stop targeting kids like this and let them learn. Smh. No one’s hair is going to distract another and his hair is out of his face. They are severely reaching in this case!

This young man is missing out on getting a great education bc someone is worrying about his hair. I have locs as well but I keep them neat and pinned up. This young man hair is not touching his ear nor shirt so this shouldn’t be a problem. This is definitely a sad situation. I am praying that the system stop being like that and let him go to school.

Black folks use all kinds of creative ways to keep theyre hair healthy in braids and styles like this when its long and and people working in schools should know tgis. Plus its texas. There should be plenty of black teachers there to get this to be a non issue to the administration. Totally rediculous to the point that its hard to believe.
