This is an example of the institutionalized racism that will sadly always exist in United States schools. The young boy's mother mentioned that he is struggling academically. The school needs to shift its priorities to more important matters.

@@user-nj5zi1rs3v If this news is accurate, the school's approach is designed to wreck the kids confidence. Designed to indoctrinute inferiority. For his type of hair, this is literally the neatest and most professional look out there. The school might not understand black hair but that's their fault, they should stop being arrogant and learn it. And they should learn the culture too. Not respecting this hair is arrogance. School's make mistakes all the time and need to be called out by tough parents. I've seen gym teachers be tough on kids who documented and legally protected disabilities. The stupid gym teachers didn't read the sheet they were given and assumed the kid was normal. This could have wrecked their confidence but you bet the teacher was put in place because the legal protections were documented. It's great that Texas now has the legal protection on their books. We understood the rules, followed the rules, and respected the rules. He was literally approached by school staff if he started getting close to the boundaries. I have found that he learned a great deal from this experience and respects many circumstances, institutions, and the boundaries of others because of this. Agreed, we must respect individuality if it is on an individual's turf. Entitlement is not a good life lesson regardless of reasoning. Before my son enrolled him in the school (Charter school) he and his wife asked if his hair was going to be a problem and was told NO! That was a lie. After his hair grew, first, they wanted it out of his face, his mother pulled it back, then it became too long, she twisted it up and they still complained, he is now home school. NO ONE is going to make him cut his locs, "What does "Hair" have to do with education??? I can make a list of other issues the schools need to be looking at and address, and hair, isn't one of them. In college, I learned that this is the type of thing that frequently leads to school lawsuits. Usually the school loses. I have also noticed that different cultures vary widely in their opinions concerning fashion and hairstyle, and that some are much more strict about allowing a very limited selection of hairstyles, especially for men, while others are very permissive. I have seen students be expelled for hairstyle choices, I believe even when there were no clearly defined rules about what was permitted, such as when they chose to come to school with a very showy mohawk dyed bright green, for example. In other schools, anything goes, and the students definitely take advantage of that and it's very common to see students wearing every color of the rainbow in their hair and coming up with extremely wild and creative hairdos, with no discrimination between the sexes. I've also witnessed the staff wearing those same creative hairdos, with no discrimination between the sexes, and in one case, an extremely dapper dresser who looks like he's ready for church daily in a brand new suit also wears his hair with longer, intricate braids. On the flip side, there are other employees who look more like a thug with plugs in their ears, symbolic and spooky slightly taboo tattoos all over their arms and visible areas, and who wear very casual and slightly tattered jeans and clothing, but who definitely do not do anything anyone would find inappropriate with their hair, and honestly do not seem to violate any actual rule I've seen that addresses appropriate appearance, although I do think the principal who suspended the student with the green mohawk probably would have talked to this particular employee and told her she would have to stop wearing plugs in her ears and would have to hide the tattoos somehow, and he may have even addressed particular aspects of the tattered clothing. Everyone has their own taste, I guess, but good luck actually being able to define what is appropriate attire and not having to pay legal consequences for trying to enforce that idea. This issue has gone all the way to the Supreme Court in the past, and the school lost. It's just a very difficult thing to standardize and this is an area where I guess, for better or worse, the rebels have an easier time winning. I think personally, I would opt for a stricter attitude if I had a choice, as long as it wasn't very very overbearingly stifling, especially in the high school environment, where students are going to test rules to find out what is and isn't permitted in order to get a better grasp on what appropriate behavior is.

My child is white and went to a High School that had hair length requirements for males. I knew the rules, followed the rules, and made sure he understood to follow the rules. Self-expression is fine as long as you don't impose it on institutions and others. Rules are rules regardless of race, religion, gender orientation, weight, height, or anything else. I understand that discrimination exist on many levels such as gender, race, religion, appearance, income level, and sometimes people's job. If I had to guess everyone reading this or posting has discriminated against someone for something sometime in their lifetime.

His designs are freaking amazing and should be shared with everyone! It takes them many hours to do braids in general. I used to work at a day training facility for adults with developmental disabilities, we had one African-American woman who was one of our residents. I felt sorry for her. There were times that she came in with her hair in a fro that was not under control. I think they washed her hair but that was it. I spent almost half of the day combing it out to get the snarls out and then putting it into braids. They weren't fancy, but it kept her hair under control. Besides it takes African-American hair longer to grow than a white person. No one should be discriminated for how they wear their hair.

@@vanessareedhawaiinani no it doesnt, be honest now. Our hair does not grow as fast as a white person UNLESS we do the most and use special products, braid it and wrap it up every single night, and use certain oils and other procedures, thats why seeing a black woman with natural LONGGGG hair is rare. We have to do things that they dont have to for our hair to grow at the same rate, and our hair is more susceptible to breakage and falling out bc of all the perms and straightening we have to do for those who want a straight texture. Also deraling with tight braids ripping out our edges and completely destroying our baby hairs. This woman is clearly an ally, Don't attack her bc you dont want to accept she spoke facts.
