I live in Wisconsin and have driven "low cars" most of my life. In snow, it is more important on how you drive rather than what you drive. Most of the cars that skid off the road are larger since they get a false sense of security. If your tires are in good shape, you should be fine as long as you drive as conditions dictate, or better yet, stay home if you can.

Also from Wisconsin and an ex car technician. To add to this, it definitely is important how you drive but having snow tires will help you a lot too. But not on ice.

I think what they meant was cars lower to the ground where they start plowing at the front end and get stuck, a higher up SUV will have more ground clearance so your not plowing the front end. That said snow tires are best for these conditions.

It’s astounding that so many US states don’t require vehicles to be equipped with snow tires during winter months. The Canadian province of Quebec requires most vehicles registered locally to have snow tires on them from December to mid-March although it would be incredibly stupid to not put them on any vehicle not registered in Quebec, but that one intends to drive through that province during that time span.

@avablue6062Күн бұрын
Well for one if the power went out it was no big deal as many people has wood stoves or gas heat. Lamps lanterns candles and fireplaces. The grid wasn’t as big as it is now so if it went out there weren’t as many homes to get the power back on too. People used to keep more food staples on hand and not depend on DoorDash and Walmart deliveries. They didn’t freak out because they couldn’t use their phones because landlines still work when the electricity goes out. All of that being said when a snow storm hits the north people are used to it and know what to do. City regulations are also different where they dig power lines deeper and water pipes deeper to avoid freezing. They also usually get snow that packs and you can drive on fairly easily. On the other hand when snow storms hit the mid south or the south the water lines aren’t dug as deep and freeze more easily and burst . Building codes from roofing to insulation are different. People freak out that aren’t used to it and usually when it hits the lower Midwest or the south it can be accompanied by a sheet of ice. Snow isn’t as much of an issue as ice. Driving on ice is like roller skating on an ice rink. The ice is also heavier than snow and weighs down the power lines . You can sweep snow off your car windshield but when your windshield ices over you have to try to break it off or melt it off.. if you can. I know you’re just joking and weren’t looking for a lengthy answer but I’m bored and off work so thought I’d leave this comment here for anyone who says why are southerners so afraid of a little snow that’s nothing up here. Well it’s because Southern and Midwest infrastructure isn’t built for it. It should be .. but it isn’t . So your house flooding from pipes bursting is real. Losing water access is real if your pipes freeze. If the electric goes out and you have an electric stove and electric heat you have nothing between you and the outside. So incase anyone thinks those people are overreacting just give them a little grace. The south and most of the Midwest don’t have infrastructure for ice and snow and gas heat and stoves and fireplaces are not something every house has. So be sweet 😂k bye ✌️
@samanthab1923Күн бұрын
@ Well versed. You’re right about the power outages. We grew up in NJ in a house built in 70. All our lines were underground. We never lost power or phone. 5 kids so there was always food in the house. My dad still got up & went to work. Mom usually had off with us, teacher in a local district. I’m in PA now & in an old Stoney. Beautiful area & home but they freak when it snows & our power goes out if the wind blows the wrong way!

For all the people making comments that it's winter or it's January (so why is this news), it doesn't snow every single day in winter. Are there not sunny dry days in winter also? What about raining days? Should people live and drive on snowy days in the winter the same as they do on completely dry days in the winter? Who do you know lives as if it will be snowing every day of a week when the forecast calls for sunny bone-dry conditions the entire week? Even snowy days aren't the same...is a 4 inch storm the same as a 24-inch storm? Should people not know how much is coming? The news reports snowstorms so that people can be warned, informed, and adjust. If the news didn't report snowstorms and just let people be ignorant, everyone would then ask why it wasn't reported and want to sue (since people weren't prepared and feel the news should have warned them).
@NirrrinaКүн бұрын
4 inches of snow/ice in Tulsa Oklahoma is very different from 24 inches in places used to snow as well. Mostly because nobody even knows how to drive during these kinds of conditions so it tends to shut down the city for the few days it lasts & rightly so. Seriously avoid driving at all if you can down here because it becomes bumper cars. Personally I'd rather take the bus then if forced to go out. At least then you'll be in the winning vehicle. I actually was on a bus talking with the driver when she said she was sliding some. A very slow slide but a slide none the less. Considering I can't really afford a car & also couldn't always physically drive it due to pain. I don't even want to think how bad I'd be out there. Except I wouldn't be out there. Fibromyalgia & cold absolutely do not mix so I tend to hibernate during the winter & it doesn't even get that cold here normally.
