About thirty years ago in my hometown there was a J.V. cheerleader who was locally famous for having a Rapunzel like mane. There was a photo of her in the paper showing her ankle length blond mane accompanying a story about her winning second prize in a state wide beauty pageant. I think half the story was about her hair. At the end of her freshman year was diagnosed with cancer. She had to undergo chemo and sometime over the summer she lost all her hair. She spent the entire summer and a couple of weeks in September in the hospital but finally, on the Friday of the homecoming game she was able to attend though in a wheelchair as she was still kind of weak from the chemo. She was wheeled out onto the field to a unanimous standing ovation then wheeled over to the sidelines where the cheerleaders usually did their cheering. She was handed pom-poms and wheeled to face the crowd who pretty much cheered her rather than the other way around. Later she said she had felt a little abandoned because none of her fellow cheerleaders where there. Then, as the marching band struck up her personal fight song, Queen's We Will Rock You!, the entire crowd began stomping their feet to the music. A few minutes later someone grabbed the handles of her wheel chair and turned her around to face the field. There, standing before her, was the entire J.V. cheerleader squad AND the entire Varsity cheerleader squad, all shaved bald to the last girl. The teams were announced and all the football players, both J.V. and Varsity, the last man ran out onto the field sporting their new style, they also were bald. The following Monday, her first day back to school, over one hundred girls showed up shaved bald. Six months later she was in remission. She was unanimously elected prom queen among other accolades. Two years after that the cancer came back and she passed away just days before she would have graduated. At the graduation ceremony her parents were presented with her posthumous diploma with Valedictorian included in the engraved sheepskin. At her grave is a statue, the pedestal it about six feet tall and the statue is life size, The statue is of her, in her cheerleader uniform (she was buried in it) sporting huge angel wings, holding up pom-poms with a mane that cascades down her body, past her ankles, down the pedestal and spilled onto the flat granite slab that covers her grave, The hair tangles around the words on the slab. Had she not died first, she almost certainly would have loved the movie Tangled.
