@realglutenfree14 күн бұрын
Tahanis entire backstory is so sad because even though Elenors was horrible too, she could escape her terrible parents very easily because they were non manipulative horrible. Tahanis parents on the other hand were always pretending like they were just looking out for her and that she is the problem. It's harder to escape something like that and it makes her think that there is still a chance to impress her parents and make them love her, even though there isnt.

In a way, by sticking to his moral code so earnestly, above all else, doesn't that make Chidi selfish as well?
@daveg826614 күн бұрын
Undoubtedly. When he fessed up to his friend that he hated his boots, it was 100% because he (Chidi) would feel better about it. He didn't want it weighing on him so he did what he needed to fix it without taking into account how it would make his friend feel at all. 100% selfishness. I think in general living your life by a single moral philosophy is always going to cause issues because life isn't black and white enough for that. No single philosophy is going to be able to take every possible situation into account. I think living based on a specific set of morals no matter what, and refusing to ever consider that they might not work in certain situations is itself selfish because ultimately all it does is make things easier for you when you need to make a difficult decision. If you have to make a decision that whichever choice you make someone will get hurt, a normal person will feel bad that they caused harm to someone, even if there wasn't a better choice. Having a moral philosophy to lean on doesn't relieve you of having to make that choice, all it does is leave you with a clear conscience about your decision. Instead of feeling bad about the person that got hurt you could blame it on your personal code, even if without the code you actually would have made the choice that hurt others less. I'm guessing you weren't expecting such a long answer, but I apparently don't know how to stop writing once I start.
@kranberry331813 күн бұрын
@@daveg8266 I relate way too much to the last sentence lol But that’s a really interesting take! And I agree about needing to be flexible. My favorite example is usually how pointing out how “lying is always bad” does not hold up in SO many situations. One of the easiest examples is giving kids medicine they don’t want and you mix it into their food or whatever to get them to eat it. Or hell even just giving them simple but dishonest answers to questions they can’t truly understand yet.
@tjet3413 күн бұрын
@@kranberry3318 we just bought our 3 year old a snow suit and told him it's like what the power rangers wear so he'll actually wear it. Sometimes lying is good. I've worked with older folks with dementia, often times you do what's called "therapeutic lying" to keep them happy and safe. "Oh yes, your mother is coming to get you in a little while, how about you work on this puzzle so you can show her when she gets here?" Is a perfectly acceptable lie to tell an 80 year old who thinks she's a little girl and is confused about needing to be picked up "from school". Especially since she'll forget on five minutes and need to be reassured again, and again, for the next two hours until her granddaughter arrives to take her home.

@Pasclesrm what a ridiculous remark. Social norms are not ethically nor morally enforceable unless it's something that not participating in would cause undue harm to others. This isn't one of those. It's wrong to force a cake (or anything else for that matter) on someone who doesn't want it just because it makes you feel good and will later get you a reward [this is selfish intent, i.e. self-serving] that's forced instead of freely given. That's not a good society.
