Everybody loves Steam Engines, but vintage Diesel engines need love too. Especially the Class 08 and Class 04 shunters. They're iconic engines with wide appeal, and it's nice to see them being accepted into heritage lines.

I'm trying to convince myself that there is a lot more to this than 'shunting things around for shunting's sake'.Reminds me of sales reps moving cars around in a forecourt...enjoyable nonetheless.

Really like your channel. Seems like we have the same taste in trains.

These locos were not included in the 01. ..07 configuration which first appeared about 1968. There were several NBL variants of the D27Xx and D29Xx , D2767 and D2774 are the last remaining members of the D2708 - D2780 class, though like many ex-BR diesel shunters a few could be found at various Industrial locations, one of which I observed at a steel works near Burry Port in South Wales in 1977. Incidentally I am not sure if D2774 is in working order, or has been disposed of!

D2700 is preserved. D2705 ended up with Blue Circle Cement, during the 1970's, before being scrapped at sometime during the 1980's.

At the kfrps - kingdom of fife railway preservation society we have apparently got the last ever NBL 0-6-0 in the world! And there was apparently only ever 4 made in the world!

I like how he kicked the switch, as if he could have moved it himself.
@Crimsonedge16 жыл бұрын
That's what makes it the perfect test. In this situation, kicking it should do nothing. If kicking does something, you know there's something wrong. Kicking can be used both to find that there isn't a problem and to find that there is. Depending on what you're looking for.

If I ran a railway, I'd use beefed up shunters (with W12 engines) this size for passenger cars, and regular diesels for freight.
@Crimsonedge16 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of your comment... In theory... In practice though, you and your railway would be broke from fuel costs in no time. These shunters are quite thirsty as it is without sticking an unnecessarily large engine in. Plus, you can only produce so much torque and power for a set engine weight. Increase the torque or power too much beyond what they weight can handle and all you'll do is spin the wheels without being able to put any of the extra power to the ground. Trust me though, these little shunters are powerful enough. The only thing they're not very good at, because of the small diameter driving wheels, is top speed. The small diameter wheels means lots of torque for shunting though.

No, class 03's are built by BR at Doncaster & Swindon and were equipped with an 8 cylinder Gardner engine and 5 speed Wilson epicyclic gearbox.

I guess it’s hard work manually pumping the oil pressure up to start 🤪
