I would love to learn more about how to utilize this system for clean smoke and consistent temperature as well as reducing cooking times!!!

Great instructional! Much appreciated. Do you think you could add lid to drum with exhaust stack to slow down the burn? I have smaller cooker that does not need as many coals
@RaleighSmoke2 жыл бұрын
Definitely. It’s a raging inferno as is. I burned up a lot of cardboard during the height of the pandemic just to burn it out. I tried it once after making this thing and well I almost caught the trees on fire. Lol! You could definitely choke it down. Some guys have double one drum on top of another, added a smoke stack and a door to feed logs in. Works well and keeps the embers down. 🍻

Nice video. Do you use the hot coals in a pit or in your smoker? I’m curious how to control temps as you add new coals.
@RaleighSmoke4 жыл бұрын
These barrels are for block pits and whole hog cookers. They burn wood really fast. You could certainly burn wood to coals and put it in vertical cooker like a WSM or a smaller block pit, but you’d need a smaller fire or at least a restricted intake on one of these drums to slow the burn rate. Phil in Florence on KZbin did a shoveled coal cook in his WSM a month or so before he died last this year. You should check it out. As for swings in temp, that’s normal with shoveled coals. People get overly focused on maintaining constant steady temps, but it’s not that big of a deal. I’m planning on building a small pit and then a larger one this year. Thanks for watching!!

I would add/drill holes into the shovel head that way you can sift out any ashes that you scoop up. No need to add ash to your cooking fire.

Seems like all the wood needed would cost a fortune. People around here will sell you a split for up to $2.00 each.

It ain’t cheap for sure. Several bbq joints in Nc got started partly because the family was in the tree cutting or milling industry.
