Here is an excerpt from the official report of the sinking of U-352: " At 1709 EWT, the U-boat broke the surface at a 45 degree angle, down by the stern. ICARUS immediately opened fire with her 50 calibre M.G. on her starboard quarter and 30 calibre M.G. on the flying bridge. By that time she had moved to approximately 1,000 yards distance. Men were seen climbing from the U-boat’s conning tower. ICARUS swung around as quickly as possible to bring her 3-inch gun to bear. Her first two shells straddled the U-boat, then the gunner found the target. Of fourteen shots six direct hits and one ricochet hit were scored on the hull and conning tower. Thirty-three men tumbled from the conning tower in clock-like precision, swimming rapidly away from the boat. U-352 remained on the surface five minutes. She sank at 1714" Probably, some men were struck by gunfire from Icarus and killed immediately or injured and died in the water; those men would not have "gone down with the ship" but would have been unaccounted for. Icarus recovered 34 men, 4 injured, from the water. A total of 12 remained unaccounted for. (Note: The firing of machine guns at a surfaced sub was not to attempt to sink the U-boat but to prevent members of the sub's crew from manning the deck cannon and/or the anti-aircraft cannon and use them at the US patrol boat. The firing of the 3" gun on Icarus was to damage the U-boat and sink it but this cannon fire would also have helped to protect Icarus from gunfire from the U-boat.) The reported circumstances of the U-boat's sinking indicate that it sank with the hatches open, thus allowing major water entry during the sinking. The reports states that prisoners said that one officer was killed in the control room by the concussion of a nearby depth charge; also, one prisoner who was taken aboard USCGC Icarus had a severed leg; despite first aid, he died shortly afterwards before Icarus reached shore.

@@jurgenkominek4322 Good day, Herr Kominek. Thank you for your comments. It appears that U-352 was a well-trained and happy crew. Your father was mentioned as being appreciated -- "GENERAL REMARKS ON U-352 U-352’s crew seemed to be content with the food on board. A standard dinner would comprise meat, potatoes, canned vegetables and fruit. The cook stated he baked and prepared roasts aboard. Two prisoners said the boat carried a supply of gin (Schnapps)." I am sitting today a few meters from the Atlantic on Bogue Banks of North Carolina (which gave the name to the US Navy escort carrier USS Bogue) in a place about 25 Naut. Miles from the location of U-352. The sun is shining warmly, the ocean is gentle - it is a lovely place to be. I hope that the U-Boat Archive section on U-352 was interesting to you. It provides many details -- others from the War are not so complete. I send you good wishes and hope that things are well with you and your family.

Dear Sir, thank you. I had to visit again. I see life with the fish and peer into this history from my chair and desk. I'm sure it would be awesome to see in real life but I admit I don't have the strength to do this. I see such a sadness but I wasn't alive then but my father and mother were from American shores. I find it scary our government kept this secret as U-boats were so close to us and kept secret. Yet, the video and the music, the music was perfect and leaves me emotional. I hope no diver EVER brings any "mementos" up. I feel that's a curse and disrespectful. They fought for their cause as did we. I suppose I'm especially emotional because the men in these U-Boats and whatever Navy are young enough to be my son. I see their faces at a red light when I glance over to the next car and think of what I didn't know when I was their age. How could I really?! I cry in my silence.

They also have many artifacts the removed from inside her too on display in their shop. Even have the original turntable and german military songs on records and they still played! They saved uniforms and weapons. So nice they could bring them up to save so others can enjoy them as well. Otherwise they would be long gone to the salt water by now.

Typically, during the summer months, the Gulf Stream moves close to our coast, south of Cape Hatteras, and brings warm, clear water with it. It’s not unusual to have 50-75’ viz and up to 80 degree temp on the sand on the offshore wrecks. Current and weather being a factor as well.

@EliteGamingSquad It would be hard to tell exactly the difference between looting and items that have deteriorated in more than 75 years, but the deck gun (probably would have been 88mm cannon in 1942) and the 20mm antiaircraft cannon are gone. The 20mm cannon was at one time (maybe 5-6 years ago) displayed on the dock in Beaufort NC with an information plaque on it, it has not been there when I looked there in the years since then and I don't know where it is now. Also, all the instruments and controls off the external bridge are gone. I have heard people say that they've seen flags, china plates, internal instruments and fitting (but I have no proof of this, having not seen them myself). The US Navy sent divers to disarm torpedoes and ammunition because of tales of divers tampering with them or taking parts for souvenirs. The Navy divers reported that some of the triggers on torpedoes were set to the armed position by tamperers or were within a hair's breadth of being armed. When the sub sank, men from its crew opened the hatches as a means of escape. That's why about 33 survivors and a few bodies of survivers who drowned trying to escape or died of battle injuries were recovered from the water by the Coast Guard Cutter Icarus - the boat that sank the sub. My understanding is that even though many hatches were open, there were some dry compartments and pockets in the sub when it was first located after being sunk for many (30 - 40) years. Those compartment were stripped of anything removable. (Again, I do not know this as a fact, since I did not see it but it's widely discussed in the area of Morehead City and Beaufort, NC.) Between survivors and bodies of casualties recovered, it is not likely that too many men went down with the sub but probably there were some. The German government today considers any sunken warship to be its property (and the government is supported by International law of the sea on this) and any warship that is known to contain human remains as a war grave. Tampering with a sunken warship that contains human remains is in the category of desecrating a cemetery.

Sea conditions and location. But current, salinity and temperature mostly. Those deeper last longer. It's colder down there and that slows the corrosive effects of the seawater. Fast currents speeds it up. Coastal waters are more salty than oceanic. On the U352, all three are present. It's relatively shallow, lots of current usually and it's not far offshore. It'll be gone before long. As will they all.

Your understanding is correct. All that remains that could be found, were repatriated. But the site was not excavated. The sea is its own master. It covers and uncovers things constantly. I was on the 352 just after George and his crew found it. Got blown out three times before we made the first dive. It was quite intact then, even had its deck gun. You could actually do a penetration dive but it was dicey. The depth, tank capacities and gas made for serious planning. My logs for that era are buried in storage a continent away but I'm going to say it was 1973-4.

Olympus Dive requires an Advanced Diver certification to dive the U-352. Nitrox certification is strongly recommended. I had over 60 dives the first time I dove the U-352. I would suggest at least 20-30, some of which should be blue water (not quarry) dives. She lies in about 115 feet of water, so plan accordingly.

If your buoyancy messes up on this one, you won’t die, is my point. But if you mess up a dive on the blue hole… you’re done lol.

Most divers are familiar with a technique called "skip breathing" where you may cut your respiration rate by 33-50%. It will extend your air a good bit but it can be very dangerous in deep dives because the carbon dioxide and nitrogen concentration in your blood will rise markedly, leaving you at greater risk for the bends or that is called hypercapnia.
@jasoncarpenter6152

Number one rule while diving: Never stop breathing. You may not be moving up or down vertically but all it takes is a large “swell” to pass overhead without your knowledge and you could have an over expansion or lung rupture.

A lot of folks rent 100 cu ft cylinders filled with 28% Nitrox. I use my own cylinders - 130 cu ft steel cylinders filled with 28%, with a 40 cu ft aluminum pony cylinder
