Believe it or not, this is after Mark's debut in 7th Sense (NCT U) and Mark and Haechan's debut in Fire Truck (NCT 127). They are so grown up in those and so baby in this.

"Chewing Gum" is NCT-Dream's debut song, so you are right, they are very young in this MV. Mark is the oldest at 17, so he is the"leader" of this sub-unit and Jisung is the youngest at 14. NCT-Dream includes Mark (17), RenJun, (16), Jeno (16), Haechan (16), Jaemin (16), Chenle (14) and Jisung (14). SM originally created this sub-unit with the idea that If they had a trainee that they felt was ready to debut even though they were really young, they would start out as a member of NCT-Dream. They were the cute babies of the group who were learning the ropes and honing their skills because they are young, but they are also some of the most talented because they debuted way sooner than a lot of trainees. Jisung is the one who had the dance break. He is the main dancer of NCT-Dream and one of the best dancers in NCT. He is actually known for his popping an locking skills and for the fact that he is sort of a mini Taemin. Jisung pretty much took the exact same path as an SM trainee as Taemin did and Taemin says he sees a lot of his younger self in Jisung. Both Jisung and Taemin became trainees around age 11 and they both debuted at age 14, they both have similar dancing styles and they both pretty much sacrificed their childhood to become an Idol, etc. Fun fact: Although Mark is young here, he is the same age as you saw him in NCT-U's "The 7th Sense" and in NCT-127's "Fire Truck" -- which were each sub-unit's debut songs. All three of these songs and MVs came out within a couple of months of each other in 2016. But because of the different concepts and styles of the songs, you get a chance to see how versatile Mark really is as an artist and how he can embrace all sides of himself -- he changes up his style depending on which group he is with at the time. The guy who is playing the school's head student or leader in this MV, is not a member of NCT -- as far as I know he is just an actor. (He's not supposed to be much older than them because he is also a student.) If you have seen any Korean cartoons or anime-style comics, etc. the character he plays is very much exactly how the antagonist or bully/bad guy character in school K-dramas looks like and acts. This is very onbrand and what most Korean viewers would recognize as the character the main characters (Dreamies) would be fighting against in the story. So it's not as weird as you might think. I kind of think of the story in their "Chewing Gum" MV as a live-action version of a comic or cartoon, so the over the top, exaggerated expressions and cuteness, etc. is supposed to mimic that style of story and the whole aesthetic of the MV is supposed to have the look and feel of a comic/anime/manga/webtoon, etc. You definitely need to check out NCT-Dream's hoverboard version of "Chewing Gum." They have special choreography that incorporates the use of hoverboards and it's really impressive, kzbin.info/www/bejne/onPCpHaVlL5pfcU. As you saw with "Chewing Gum," they started out with a very young and cute concept that fit the fact that they were all teenagers. But over the years their style and concept has grown and evolved like the members of the group. The whole point of the song and the concept of the group is to appeal to fans in their age group. Kpop is full of young groups who are trying to appeal to an older, more mature audience. So I think SM Entertainment was pretty clever to created this sub-unit as a way to appeal to a younger demographic. Why not market music to a younger audience? I think it's kind of refreshing that SM decided to start NCT-Dream out with more of a family-friendly concept because all the members were actually still children.

I just love that "Chewing Gum" was still so cute and age appropriate, but still managed to be a bop like I always have a blast listening to this song lol Of course I am the same age as most of the Dream members and was there for this at debut, so I'm a lil biased, but this was perfect for them. Renjun's lil snaggletooth always gets, it was so cute lol And don't worry you'll know them all well-enough that you'll recognize everyone in every era!

4:00 when Haechan kissed Mark i believe Mark said they were in like the 6th grade so they wouldve been like 12 and 13 (where as in Chewing Gum they were 16 and 17) but yh it is what you said, the boys were training and mark was lying down on the floor and Haechan decided to just lay over him, "lost control" as he put it and kissed mark😭😭😭😭 I'm pretty sure Mark then proceeded to argue with Haechan and i think a bigger reason for freaking out was all the fact that there were adults around to say Mark fr was panicking😭

Young or not, ages were 14 to 17 and I know very few teenagers want to be dressed like they're in preschool lol SM did them dirty 😂

However, those uniforms are not that far off from Korean middle school uniforms, just exaggerated. Heck, there are school uniform rental shops inside amusement parks in Korea so adults can dress up in them. So watching this wouldn't feel weird to a Korean audience.

@LesEXO2012 Same and I don't understand the appeal or the purpose lol Like I understand SM wanting Dream to appeal to the younger crowd but I remember being 14, 15, 16, 17 years old and watching people my age dressing up like they appear on Barney was not on my Bingo card lmao I also don't understand idols needing to dress up like students. Why is that appealing? Idk, from two different cultures and I don't want to offend anyone's culture but I just wish I understood the appeal of having older people dress like kids/students lol

So I don't know if someone has said this, but originally NCT Dream was supposed to debut after NCT U's The 7th Sense, but it was pushed back till after NCT 127's FireTruck. I don't remember why, but it allowed for Renjun and Chenle to join the group as well as for the hoverboards to be made. The hoverboards are what really set Dream's debut apart from everyone else, if you watch a live stage.

2:58 Haechan's speaking voice broke for sure but his singing voice mostly sounds the same as when he was 16+ when he was like 12, 13 his singing voice was higher for sure but still somewhat similar

The Mark & Haechan first kiss was actually before this time period. It was during their training days so probably when they were 15&14 respectively. They were roommates as well. What was confusing about them recounting this story was Mark saying that, usually when these things happen, they don't want the adults (staff members) around. Now, I don't know if Mark meant the kissing part or the fighting part..

My adorable babies🥺 Mark was 17 Renjun Jeno Haechan Jaemin were 16 Chenle 14 And Jisung 14 The members even 127 members are always saying that Jeno and Jaemin face are literally the same since day 1, they only grow taller and that their bodies got bigger because of working out but it's like they put their face on an adult body. Yeah they were in 6th grade means like 13 years old and Haechan just lost control and Kiss Mark on the lips 😅😅 most of time their fight were about Skinship

I would echo the others who have suggested watching the choreo for this (hoverboard work for a huge chunk) because it is really tough. Fun fact, NCT Dream were supposed to debut before 127 but the company/choreographers decided to add the hoverboards and so pushed their debut back in order to give them time to learn how to use them (and then dance on them.... yikes)
