Fun fact: "We Go Up" was originally meant to be Mark's NCT-Dream graduation song. As you might have noticed, he is kind of highlighted in this MV and a lot of the MV looks like the members are just hanging out and partying, etc. Some of the scenes in the MV are actually the members just celebrating Mark's last MV with the NCT-Dream members and the members saying goodbye to him as their leader, etc. Mark -- the main rapper, who is also in NCT-127, NCT-U and SuperM -- is the oldest member of NCT-Dream and he had recently turned 19 right before this comeback, so that is why this was a graduation celebration. NCT-Dream is NCT's third sub-unit, which began in August 2016, and it is made up of all the youngest members of NCT, All the Dream member's are currently between the ages of 18 and 21 years old -- they were 16-19 in this MV -- and they were 14-17 when they debuted. SM originally created this sub-unit with the idea that If they had a trainee that they felt was ready to debut even though they were really young, they would start out as a member of NCT-Dream. They were the cute babies of the group who were learning the ropes and honing their skills because they are young, but they are also some of the most talented because they debuted way sooner than a lot of trainees. The way NCT-Dream originally was designed to work was that the members were part of the group until they turn 19 and become an adult. SM's original plan was that when the members turned 19 they were supposed to graduate from the group and they are no longer considered a member of NCT-Dream. As I mentioned, Mark "graduated" from NCT-Dream in 2018, and Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin and RenJun, who are all older than 19, we thought would be graduating sometime last year. (Which would have left NCT-Dream with only 2 members, with the idea that new trainees would probably debut sometime last year and become members of NCT-Dream.) However, SM announced at the beginning of 2020 that they decided to make NCT-Dream a permanent group and suspend the whole " graduation" concept, including putting Mark back in the group. So, when the group debuted, and currently, NCT-Dream was/is a 7 member group, but between 2018 until close to the end of 2020, you will see Dream with only 6 members. Even after SM announced the reintroduction of Mark as part of the group, Dream had a few comebacks without Mark, because he was busy promoting with NCT-127 and SuperM. (Mark is one of the busiest members of NCT because he participates in almost every project that NCT has ever done since pre-debut SMRookie Days, as well as several solo collaboration projects with other SM artists, and now as a member of SuperM. Some say Mark is SM's favorite NCT member.)

I love the way NCT mixes genres and a lil fun fact recently learned and wanted to share was one of their producers said that SM always ask for their vocals to be on top of the beat while most companies ask for the opposite. I would've thought it was the opposite because for me at least when im listening the beat sounds so prominent.

This song was actually meant to send the boi himself, Mark Lee, off into exclusively being an NCT 127/U/later on a SuperM member. It's about maturation. Going up in the sense of being more popular, but, also, becoming more grown up. They come back to this theme in BOOM, as they thought that that would be main vocalist, Haechan's, departure song, however, because of their burst in popularity, SM decided to keep them as a fixed unit of 6 members, plus Mark, occasionally.
