finally an appreciation for jaehyun's vocal, his voice and vocal range always amaze me, but people and even nctzens always doubt it and forget that jaehyun is officially one of nct's main vocal since their debut in 2016. I feel bad for Doyoung, Jaehyun and Jungwoo cuz they're criminally under appreciated as vocalist in ncity. Doyoung is easily 2nd strongest vocalist of NCT with very small gap with Taeil, but I've seen many ppl placing haechan or even renjun in 2nd place, even if many accept him as 2nd they still act like there is huge gap between them. JaeWoo having it even wrost like they're 90% time ranked below dream members. I blame SM for this, they should give them Main and lead vocal moments instead of treating like rapper and sub vocalist.

Okay i have a theory about that matter. It's a well known fact that people hype Haechan for literally breathing and praise his vocals all the time but i've always thought it's because of his tone, his voice is extremely distinguishable even when vocal coaches or musicians react to NCT they always notice Haechan first because of his noticeable tone and i guess that's why fans think he's the best. So yeah Haechan's strongest asset is his tone. As for Renjun, it's his emotionality, he really portrays emotions very well and i prefer him in that matter over anyone in NCT, also it corresponds well to his personality so the effect is doubled for fans. Haechan and Renjun are my ult biases in NCT but vocally Doyoung is definitely superior and i guess people don't notice that because he's not as entertaining as Haechan or as emotional as Renjun but also his tone doesn't really stand out even though his voice is very rich and thick. I believe in order to appreciate Doyoung's vocals one really need to pay attention to him and listen to many songs especially bsides simply because 127 songs especially title tracks are rap heavy and vocalists don't get that much opportunity to shine thus you automatically assume that they aren't that strong unlike Dream songs which are more vocally oriented giving the vocalists many opportunities to shine and that's why Haechan and Renjun are more appealing and appreciated by fans i guess. I'm gonna have to admit that i thought little of Doyoung actually of NCT 127 vocal line except for Tail because of the above mentioned reason and it's only recently that i've come to appreciate Doyoung's vocals.... I guess i understand where your frustration coming from

As for Jaehyun, it's because we've cornered him in the visual zone and SM didn't help by giving him more rap lines than vocal lines. Jungwoo on the other hand doesn't get enough lines to be appreciated in the first place and he's so immersed in being the funny guy of the group that we're forgetting how beautiful his voice is. I hope that changes one day

don't really know much about vocal technique but damn taeil has been sounding so good from the sticker era, so glad we no longer have the throaty(?) nasally mix from kick it album and doyoung too has been sounding good esp in the musical clips (ig the training paid off), kind of shocked to see both renjun and chenle ranked lower than ten but I would've love to see more explanation on that one. thanks for the video!! must've been tough searching for all the clips

I thought it was just me who noticed that Taeil's voice has been different from his rookie days. I first noticed this change probably during or after their Regular album where he strains his voice a lot on their songs. He's my bias but I'm no expert in this field so I just didn't dwell on it a lot even though I was quite disappointed. And he was also doing it until NCT2020 especially in Faded in my Last Song (my fav track from the album btw) so yeah... but I'm glad that he was able to overcome it and based from their uncut videos, he's also still experimenting and researching to make his voice sound better.

I'm more inclined to say Jaehyun. Taeil has potential to be the best but he rarely sings below D3 for me to figure out properly Not outstanding but they both have decently developed lows edit: after much consideration Taeil > Jaehyun.

one day i hope the nct producers can let jungwoo explore more with his voice and don’t just confined him into the soft vocal range. the way he sings in goodbye, his stages of balloons and walk with woojuho, and when he did ten’s part for their beautiful stage were really good and shows he has the potential to do stronger vocals but we don’t get chances to see it. i think the main reason why nctzens doubt his vocal abilities a lot is because he’s always singing in the more cutest and higher range. Not to mentioned the first time we ever heard jungwoo hit a high note was in the snow prince stage and that’s not even an nct song. i hope he can get more opportunities to showcase his vocals.

I am not shocked that NCT 127 has the best vocal lineup in the NCT. Jaehyun as a main vocalist I wish he was given more lines. Also, Jungwoo I am impressed. Before we barely had any material to give him a rank but since his hiatus he's slowly been improving and singing here and there. Jungwoo one of the member that gets barely any lines but still being number 5. You can tell Jungwoo he has so much potential.

I totally understand if someone will question Jungwoo's vocals. But why is jungwoo always underrated in terms of singing? because SM didn't give him enough lines and SM didn't highlight his voice. I'm sure if Jungwoo was given the same portion he would also be able to do it. Just came back here and not at people pitting Jungwoo and Haechan against each other. I know that they are quite good and but in my opinion this shouldn't be who is better but how both of them can improve in certain areas. I would like an idol who grows instead of someone stagnant both of them are young and have plenty of opportunities. Fans beginning an endless conversation of talking whose better and not the severity of them having to learn to support properly is a big no for me. The content creator may not be the best but you can see that he/she is trying by providing some info and data which pertains to the idol's current ability and just because it shows that they support quite shallow right now, it doesn't mean that the creator degrades their ability. If you guys don't have anything good to comment make your own content and not start an unwarranted fight just to make your faves look better.

@@pandariri2694 i'm late but as you can see from taeil's analysis here i mentioned his regression (late 2019~early 2021). It's mostly noticeable during Kick It and Resonance era. Kick It especially, if you listen to Taeil's high notes in the bridge, he was straining for his life on the A4. Now compare it to the ones on this video: 13:01 ~ 13:08 Taeil Kick It era would've strained these notes

Could be. He started showing signs of "regression" after the Superhuman tour. I think Taeil's voice got a bit worn out during that time which made him try less and his stylistic habits got worse

I feel like Haechan could do better than what he is doing right now if he tried to being less stylistic and focus more on techniques. I like his voice a lot but I can hear his struggle in NCT songs how he is constantly given parts that are beyond his capabilities. For me, his main problem is his limited range and lack of polished/technical aspects in his singing which makes it a bit boring when he sings the entire song, even for someone like me who loves his voice. Example: Good Person. But when he sings a few lines in NCT songs, I really enjoy his voice.

Love this always here for Nct vocal discussion! I do have some questions - What makes you think Jaehyun is a low tenor not a Baritone? Also with the amount of supported G4s shouldn't his range be F#4/G4? Or is it because of the tightness in his support range you still can't give it to him yet? - What would Taeil need to do to be AA-Proficient? Just less tension & nasality or showing some resonance? Cause I get Doyoung even though he's consistent with A4s his placement is a major technical issue that's why he's still AA - I still can't get over Chenle when I first heard him I seriously thought he was way better than he actually is, cause like he's way more open/relaxed and less shallow than the rest of the weak tier and even Haechan, but Haechan def improved lately so I understand that now. His voice fools you at first but yea still love my baby boy though

- Just his vocal weight in general doesn't resemble a typical baritone imo. If you listen to his F#4~G#4 they don't sound baritone-ish. He also gets very muffled below C3 which is unlikely for a baritone. I'd wait for more material to give F#4/G4. Most of these G4s are fairly recent. And it's only there when he tries. Otherwise, he can be a bit tight on F#4 as well, if that makes sense. - Yeah I think just less tension, nasality, and tightness should bring Taeil closer to AA-P at least. Because it can be apparent even on his mid range, kinda like Yuju.

I agree with you on the "airy" and "nasal" part. But honestly, it's not only NCT who sing like that. Almost all kpop singers sing like that. I don't know if it's really their way if singing or they're asked to sing like that. I don't know. Tgey even have this habit when they end their notes, it's like they're pulling their voice, or what. It's like there's a click on the end. And it's so annoying. I don't get why haechan doesn't push to get a better technique. He is one of the members with most lines so i would have thought that sm would have pushed for him to have a vetter technique? Is it because he is already too busy? Or is it a stylistic choice meant to preserve his vocal colour or something like this? And another question. If for example haechan and the dreamies lack so much in vocal support and technique why do they sound so much better live than many other idols who share the same tier with them???? I don't know much of vocal technique and i struggle to find people who do and are objective and can answer to my questions. So i would really appreciate a lot an answer if you have time! I could not say that his stylistic choice prevent him to enhance his techniques. The reason is his overall engagement especially his nasality issues and mix. Haechan can sing live better and even the Dreamies, because sm trained their artists to sound stable as better as they can. For example, EXO's Xiumin, SUJU's Donghae and Shinee's Key, even they are lacking of better techniques, but they are sound good. It is merely because of their style and stability. There are also singers that due to their overemphasize on stylistic choice, their techniques have been drowned. These are NCT's Doyoung and BTS's Jungkook as i have known. But nowadays, these two singers are now more focused on their techniques than their stylistic approach.

basically having good placement by properly projecting your voice forward allows for a much free-er and louder sound if that makes sense. but if you are not projecting your voice correctly, you'll end up sounding stuck and constricted most of the time. that's the case for doyoung. instead of projecting his voice forward, he's almost singing at the back of his throat. try comparing this high note 9:53 to the one in magic carpet ride 10:13. same note but you can hear how the second one sounded a bit stuck and not as free. it's better than the studio version though. the studio version sounded wayyy stuck and small. or compare it to 9:44. not exactly the same note but you can hear how it does not have that forward sound as the one during pre debut mixing/belting involves the blending of chest voice and head voice. doyoung's mix is more on the headier side as it lacks proper chest coordination. it is not necessarily a bad thing to have a headier mix but it does hinder him from achieving a stronger, fuller sound. compare this F#4 kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioS5pHSKg8SVpNk (probably his best F#4 ever. very strong and full sounding) to this kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3Oygp2Yr9Nqo7c at 3:42 notice how it's more light sounding compared to pre-debut as doyoung's mix went from a more balanced with good chest coordination to light and heady post debut.

Not much to say about the ranking because we have the exact same one from W-A onwards. (I have no ranking for the ones in W tier.) So, I'm actually curious about what you think of NCT vocalists in terms of their agility. They're a little underwhelming tbh, but I think Taeil has done some pretty decent albeit simple runs. Maybe we'll hear more from him during the concert.

@@avril5757 Taeil's runs aren't bad. I liked the ones in Paradise and some of the ballads. But once it gets fast, it gets a bit troubling. The ones in Back 2 U are alright too, but I wouldn't say they're fast. He gets sloppy on the more complex ones (Blow My Mind for example). Keep in mind that for these vocalists, your cord development still plays a role for how agile you could be so I'd say his agility is still not as developed as Baekhyun/Taeyeon ish, but it's decent enough.

Meaning, not every run has to be fast, and not all agile singers necessarily do fast runs, it'll depend on their musicality. But singers with good agility should be able to handle mid-high tempo riffs and runs. The style of that run and the arrangement of that run also is an indication of how complex it is.

i watched this bcs i was really just curious (casually searched nct vocal rank) as someone who knows nothing abt vocal techniques or whatever technicalities, i enjoyed watching this-it's funny how ppl who knows nothing, get mad with ppl who actually knows what they're doing. some people just really need to touch some grass lol [these are just my opinion] i'd possibly just ramble going with nct's vocal, my views with their vocals actually go along with your rank. i ult nct, and i know most of them have weak points in terms of vocals. i was exposed with singers (at least) i somehow catch up on what's clean and what's not, or what/whose vocals are at "risks" if that makes sense; it's like you're on edge when they're singing you're not sure if they'll deliver or not. i'm kind of sensitive with sounds. i wince when i catch them (idols) sounding forced. as a yuta stan, i still think he has weak vocals, it's his weak point but other than that i'm okay with him (i know he's still not confident with his vocals, i still love him☝️) i won't point anyone aside from him bcs some may think i'm a hater which i am not, i love the whole nct brand equally. --but i understand their weak points bcs they're idols, their umm culture(?) only focus with some parts. it's like as long it's not sounding bad to ppl who doesn't have backgrounds with vocals, it's fine. same as dancing, as long as they cover other position it's fine. and some vocals kpop in general are just boring to me (if that's appropriate for me to say as someone who knows nothing lol) i honestly think, only few in kpop actually sound good GOOD. and yeah kpop recently is more focused with dancing

Renjun is a bit tricky for me tbh. I've heard a few moments up to Eb4 ish that I'd consider passable but then on another performance he would just go very shallow on a D4 lol. I actually lowkey think if Jungwoo actually tries he can get F4 down. The first F4 doesn't sound like just a lucky day the development is there. He just sings way too soft 90% of the time. Thank you for making this kind of videos. Because you inlcude examples, it's easier to understand what is lack of support and what is nasality. I would like to ask your opinion about the way neos improve/don't improve. Do you think the result is solely on them (depends on the amount of effort and hours of practice) or Korean vocal teachers might not explain well their mistakes, so neos don't know what and how to improve? (the older in age vocal teachers in academia are severely criticised by the younger vocal teachers in my country, some singers say they even have to relean everything after their graduation). As I understand, idols are not pushed to be better because there is no real need (they lipsink most of the time, the bar is low), however, there are members who want to improve and yet there is no noticeable progress in years. So how come?

There are a lot of factors improving and there's no clear-cut answer. it can depend. The majority of the members didn't improve most probably because their vocal coaches aren't teaching them correctly. And it's hard to improve when you have the basics down to begin with (and this is the case for the majority of the neos) because they have nowhere to start. No matter how hard you practice if you don't get the basics down there's only so much you can improve. Members like Doyoung and Taeil had already established their vocal technique even prior to joining SM I believe. Doyoung already sounded solid from his high school clips and Taeil was a vocal major so surely he already had good vocal training. So that really helped them improve along the way. When you've already established proper breath support and stuff it's much easier to improve That being said it can also depend on them. Doyoung went to receive a lot of vocal training from multiple vocal coaches prior to his musical, which helped him improve a lot. He would not be close to Taeil's level if he had not made those improvements

@@H_armiger ah yes that's what i was trying to say lol 1. I think overworking and his bad habits led to regression. He started to go for the nasal, whiny, and tight approach around 2019 and it kinda made him struggle to properly belt above G4 without being too tight. At one point Doyoung was arguably stronger because of Taeil's regression (and Doyoung was also improving). Fortunately he was able to overcome his regression. He still carries those bad habits from time to time but it's controllable now. 2. Doyoung for some reason became a bit stylistic right after debuting. I guess you could say it's his preference and also accumulated bad habits. Because he was keen on going for a very soft and breathy approach which really limited his abilities over time. He was able to handle G#4 really well during SM Rookies (as seen on the video 9:53) but after his debut he would struggle on a F#4 without being too tight or throaty sometimes (watch his old covers on their channel or their KOMS performances). And then sometime before musical, he was able to develop his chords strong enough and able to expand his supported range, fortunately. If we look at his overall technique he did improve. He would've been closer to Jaehyun than Taeil prior to his musicals imo. But yeah he still lacked the projection and chest coordination he used to have prior to debuting despite the improvements. 3. I am not sure about that sorry. I'm not very familiar with sub-class and stuff in vocal typing. 4. I don't get what you meant by three levels

@@himi_ Well, it's good to have Taeil recovered whatever the reason was for his regression. I do hear from other ppl that he is given parts that are difficult for his level and detrimental in a long run. Doyoung once said that he didn't like that his voice wasn't easily recogniseable, plus he tends to do what public wants, so I suspect maybe his airy style was proposed early on by a teacher as desireable? He also used to be very hesitant singing on the spot, I'd guess some of his problems are psychological (tensing up, overthinking). I know Doyoung is called a lyrical tenor. OK, I'll look up for an opinion about Jae's type elsewhere. As for Tende. Pre-debut Doyoung sang in middle range more, I saw ppl saying it's his comfortable zone. However, from the get go if we take whole Tende songs, not partucular notes, it was Jaehyung - low, Taeil - middle, Doyoung - high. Like 3 different instruments.

It's probably because dream's sound didn't really need the rap in their first TTs, and 127 uses more of it because their sound is more hiphop leaning. They incorporate more rapping nowadays which is kind of a shame because I think I'd rather take more songs like mfal and chewing gum than glimo and hot sauce. I don't care if they're not strong singers, I prefer weak vocals over weak rap. Cause I became an nctzen somewhere around late 2020, and when I watched the recordings, I really couldn't see how Taeil's the top vocal when Doyoung (or even Haechan in his range) seemed much more consistent. But he’s not on par with Taeil. Those recording behind the scenes expose everything, he struggles quite a bit in comparison to Taeil. And to be honest no one did justice to any of Taeil’s lines. Either they were lip syncing or singing over his back track and singing his notes in a lower tone or doing extra things that were very unnecessary. SM should have just let the backtrack play. I think the Chinese members have a different, lighter style because that's what's popular in Chinese pop. To be fair, most of these members aren't excellent, but I think Xiaojun is very underrated. He has a gorgeous voice and is a great dancer too.

i think jungwoo is a talented vocal, but sm is wasting it. he doesn't get many lines and they dont post any of his covers, and i'm sure he's recorded a few, seen as he is a singer.
