Apature is describing the diameter of a circle, but the amount of light is based on area of the circle. Therefore, amount of light is sqrt(2)*A, or roughly 1.4*A.

For 3 stops I can use .9 ND ....CTO or CTB? Thanks

3 stops means 0.9 or ND 8. This is different from CTO or CTB, which are for adjusting temperature.

@@ConstantineSPhotography So , I came across a question with 4 possible answers and i cannot understand it....here it is: If you want to reduce the sunlight coming in a window by three stops as well as the color temperature from 5500K toa a tungsten balance, which gel would you apply? 1- CTB.9 ND 2- CTO.6 ND 3- half CTO.3 ND or 4-CTO .9 ND .....and I cannot figure it out.....can you help me?

This looks like a complicated question, sorry I can't give you an answer as I'm not familiar with CTO or CTB. I guess this will require some trial and error.
