Good video. Gave me just what I wanted about centre line lift points and strong points on the sill seams. Good to include strategy for when the ground clearance is less than minimum jack height, and I did have that issue, but I chose to just drive a pair of wheels up onto 1” thick planks. That enabled me to slide the Jack under the central lift point.

I’ve always been hesitant to lift from the center of the pinch welds on each side. Glad to hear it’s not an issue. Going to save me a lot of time adjusting ride height and working underneath the car until I cave in and get quick jacks.

Trust me I was too at first! But yeah, been doing this many times over the past 2+ years and no issues. Gotta remember these cars are pretty light so there’s not a massive amount of weight riding on the pinch weld compared to some other vehicles

Thank you!!! I just got an ND myself and a small armada of parts inbound already, lol. Giving me more confidence to tackle some of the more minor things on my own (axleback exhaust, wheel spacers, maybe the spyder grille if im ambitious, lol).

Love your videos. I have never jacked a car up, but I am going to install the appearance package myself. I'm really handy and do alot of carpentry. Working on my car can't be that bad, right? Lol. I am confident I can install the parts, but jacking up the car makes me nervous. Can you break down how I get each side up? Sounds like you place the hydraulic jack on one side and lift the car, place the 2 jack stands at the appropriate jack point. Then go to the other side and carefully lift the car with the hydraulic jack from the other side. Then place the jack stands in the correct spot. Is that right? I'm clear on the placement for the jack stands, just trying to wrap my head around the actual execution, if that makes sense. Thanks again.

So I’ll probably use your method of lifting in the middle and placing the Jack stands. My question is when you get one side up on the stands and your lifting the other side up does this effect the stability of the side with the Jack stands? I’m guessing I need to be careful and work slowly. My new mix-5 will be due for its first oil change soon and your videos have been very informative! Thank you!
@DriveMX5
@DriveMX5 2 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching and I’m glad my videos are helpful. I always lift the other side carefully to prevent any instability but haven’t had any issues. I don’t go slow per say, but I’m not cranking the jack up at full speed. Just start slowly and carefully and listen for any weird noises indicating the car and/or stands are unstable

I know Flyin miata, and likely other places, sell adapters to fit on the pinch weld. It’s basically a hockey puck with a slot cut out. I never felt the need for them

I tried jacking up from the center side and ended up peeling the pinch weld apart. Maybe I just didn’t line it up well? Not sure.

That’s might be what happened. Also I would say be careful with the angle, like lifting one side super high, could also contribute. Might be able to bend the pinch weld back together!

Is it really safe to lift in the middle of the side of the car on the pinch weld? I'm seeing a lot of conflicting info on the forums etc. - some saying to never lift on the pinch weld as it may bend etc. And some say to use a hockey puck with a slot cut out. On the other hand, I've also read horror stories of people lifting their ND from the front subframe as well. I'm about to lift my ND for the first time to swap out my wheels, and just hoping that it's safe to lift from the side middle on the pinch weld and then set the jack stands on the pinch welds between the divets, per this video. Has anyone else used this method?
@DriveMX5
@DriveMX5 Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is safe. Lift slowly and carefully to minimize the chance of damage and injury. The methods I showed in this video are standard methods for lifting virtually all cars on the road, including the MX-5. The horror stories you see are caused by human error and/or equipment failure, not a fault of the car itself. You can find jack point diagrams online that point to the same places I show in this video. Here is an example from one of the forums: forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=640140

Thanks. Just lifted mine today from the middle of pinch welds to swap wheels and it seemed to work fine. Although the middle does look a little less reinforced than the actual 4 jack points (between the notches), I didn't notice any damage or bending of the pinch weld. Of course it's not sitting on the lift for very long as I put the jack stands under right away. Interestingly, in the manual, it does indicate that there's actually no pressure being applied on the pinch weld itself when the factory jack is used. There's a notch, and the weight is applied to either side. That's why some people say to use a hockey puck and cut out a slot. But putting directly on the pinch weld seemed to be fine. @@DriveMX5

Do the pinch welds bend from doing this? So the entire weight of the car rests on paper thin edges? That sounds crazy to me.

I haven’t had any issues with it. It does seem nerve wracking at first, but be slow and steady with it and it will be fine. Those areas are structural parts of the car so they are some of the strongest points on the body
