Lol well Procon-Ten was a system that allowed to retract the steering wheel onto the dash done with an iron cable connected to the firewall right behind the engine. So in case of collision when the engine moves towards the rear of the car it will press this piece in the firewall therefore retracting the steering wheel to avoid hitting the driver's head on the steering wheel. This is a non-airbag steering wheel mechanism. Cheers!

Correction Jason, the Artura isn’t not awd. The e motor is in the transmission not the front axle. Therefore McLaren is the only present automaker that doesn’t have an awd car

Actually in the nd3 u can use it as a touchscreen in motion now, even though I love the rotary dial its way safer no contest, its way easier and better and quicker to use and no fingerprints on the screen, I still agree that touchscreen in motion should be allowed, because for some functions in android auto n carplay its way easier to use the touchscreen.

Jason, TDi was first seen on Fiat Croma 1.9 Diesel in 1988 if we’re talking about direct injection diesel turbo engines. Developed by Fiat Powertrain, patent then sold to Bosch, then implemented in VW’s. The Fiat engine was a 1.9 litre 90hp diesel, pretty much unheard of in std cars at the time. The base of the engine (but in 16V form) could be found for decades even in GM cars like Opel/Vauxhall's and Saab's, after Fiats infamous deal with GM which in turn got Fiat Group some pretty horrible heavy platforms/gearboxes (that breaks) for Fiat GrandePunto, Croma, Alfa Romeo 159, Brera, Spider etc.

Hey love the show! I'm a 2019 ND2 RF owner and I love that thing to death. It has 2 modifications, eibach springs with slightly more spring rate and 10mm drop and a BBR GTI exhaust to give it a bit more sound. I don't know if it's the springs or different suspension tuning in the RF but the car leans so progressively and grips so well on michelin PS5 tires that I never experienced this suden things that Jason is describing. I got the car used WITH the mods already done, so maybe that's all it needs?

You’d love to hear a loud Bugatti Veyron in Manhattan? You clearly haven’t learned NYC just installed noise cameras in 5 burroughs. Over 85db is an $800 ticket. Second offense $2,500. Yeah, you heard right. Loud exhaust, honking, music emulating from your car is illegal. The general public seems to like the Orwellian idea. The worst part? A guy got busted in a Porsche with a stock exhaust system. He sued and lost. Loud noise is a health issue now, doncha know? Story is in the latest issue of Road & Track. Lots of cities are interested in installing these things at $35,000 a pop.

@@stuffhappens5681 I wasn't saying it was a good idea, I was just saying it wasn't going to bother a Veyron driver. On the other hand, there are scientific studies showing that the high noise levels in cities actually do damage health. As the driver of a WRX STI, I'm conflicted, though the physical sensations, the accelerations, decelerations, and multidirectional g-forces of driving and doing the three pedal dance have always been more important to me than the sounds.

That was it‘s primary objektive: move the steering wheel out of the drivers heads trajectory in case of a head-on crash (and tension the seatbelts). Airbags were still expensive in the early eighties and some folks (especially with Audi) were anxious they might go off at the wrong moment.

Highly disagree with Jason about Mazda's rotary dial complaint. I own a MY '21 Mazda vehicle. Zero issues with usability, though I started using Mazda's native infotainment rather than Android Auto or Apple Carplay.

Right. I get it. But once you experience CarPlay + Touch, you realize no in-house infotainment (bar Tesla's) can come close.

@@TheCarmudgeonShow I'm a simpleton. I listen to music and your podcast. I found that seeing a map on the screen (at least for Android Auto) was more distracting than helpful and prefer to simply listen to turn by turn directions. In fact, I love that if you push the home button when already on the main menu, you get a clock in the middle of the screen and the rest is blacked out... Perfection. My only complaint is that (as a former Golf owner) I miss the compass being integrated into the gauge cluster, rather than needing the infotainment screen to be on navigation to show cardinal directions... Which isn't even terrible.

Topic suggestion, comb through the Cash for clunkers list. I just did and we all know about some of the horror stories of those crushed but maybe talk about how some the "makes" are unique when they are just BMW/Mercedes/Jaguar import stories. The Wallace Enviro, Lambda Control, J.K. Motors (joke?) Import Trade S and so on. Also what are your thoughts on crushing all these cars potentially leading to the inflation of the car market today that converged on the covid times.

I prefer Mazdas screen philosophy. 95% of what I do is switch between nav and music and they have hard buttons for that.

1:02:41 Interior is cheap feeling because it's clearly a base model. Base models didn't have the wood around the center console just like in the photo and also didn't have the beautifully machined aluminium captains armrests. You guys in the U.S. also never got the extended leather package; which is a real shame because with the extended leather package the car really isn't far off a Bentley. The only thing you can differentiate between the Flying Spur and Phaeton in terms of quality are the Phaetons cheap feeling buttons and switchgear.

How can the 1973 2.7 RS be based on the 1974 Le Mans winning RSR (non-homologated) if it didn't win Le Mans until the following year? 😂😂😂

Refer to 1973 Daytona race, held 3-4 Feb 1973, won by an RSR.

I think the quality with the phaeton Is material selection and just how everything feels. The crispness of the buttons, the knurling, etc. there's nothing wrong with the 04 a8 interior, But something about that steering wheel feels incoherent, and you can argue the pop-up screen is a little bit of a gimmick I think the ls460 analogy is really misguided, Lexi of that era had absolutely atrocious interiors
