idea for a show. I would love to hear you to go through an alphabetical list of car manufacturers and choose the one model you would have in your garage for each one. See which ones are emotional connections that defy logic, fun, historical, which ones you agree on, etc. Should be worth a couple of episodes. Maybe selections by designers as well? EDIT: Hmmm, maybe you can get it done soon, make a selection of 64 cars from the discussion, and tie it into the upcoming March Madness and put out a bracket pitting Jason's selection of picks from his list versus Hyphen's selections from his list and then have the fans pick and see who wins? Could be fun and garner some attention you guys, Hagerty, and the like...

@@nicopaoletti3501 Not allowed. One car from one manufacturer. The interesting thing would be to see Hyphen's historical knowledge come into play. I thought for him we might need to introduce a Jay Leno rule where he, or even Jason, get to sub a couple of modern makers for older ones that are now defunct. For example, Derek might throw out Buick and replace it with a Hispano Suiza or something of that nature.

Two time Jaguar owner here. Brought my (new) XE because I liked it to drive more than the equivalent 3 Series (and it was a lot cheaper) and I was bored with BMW's having had four. That was in the UK. Moved to the US and brought a (used) F Type. Partly because I wanted to represent my home country and partly because it represented far better value than a Cayman. In my mind obviously I think the Jag gives me the avatar of an English rogue, when in reality I'm an accountant with a rapidly thinning hair line.

Last week there was a light rain round my way for the first time in quite a while.. there was also a Mustang partially in someone's front yard.. it had gone off the road at a regular old slow speed corner and somehow squeezed between a tree and a power pole and taken out the limestone wall. It seemes to have understeered rather than oversteered, which I considered something of an achievement

People projecting an image of themselves through a consumer good is the outcome of successful marketing. What’s interesting to me is when people think they’re projecting a certain image but it’s widely being perceived differently by everyone else (eg. enormous lifted trucks to project masculinity, but everyone perceives it as insecurity).

I have a Subaru Outback, and I understand that I am an outlier. I've chased motorcycles up Angeles Crest. I use the AWD for 4-wheel drifts. I go fast in the left lane, slow in the right, I pay attention to the traffic patterns around me. (It's worth noting here that mine is both completely stock, and has a manual transmission.) I've also road tripped it, driven in the snow (beautiful drifts), loaded up with bikes and/or dogs, gone camping, and gotten myself into and back out of trouble off road. I like to think that I actually use what my car can do.

No one asked but in WA at least, all law enforcement Ford Explorers- including the unmarked cars used by detectives, have yellow front running lights whereas the consumer version uses traditional white LEDs. This applies to local LEOs and State Patrol as well. It's easiest to tell with 2020- model years which are the most common now. They all have no roof rails or roof rack, marked or unmarked.

The big issue is that the front swaybars on Subarus are weak sauce = people driving so slow around corners… Worse: they go 10-20mph slower around corners and then 10-20 mph too fast on straightaways… They just cannot grasp the concept of choosing ONE speed and sticking with it on mountain or coastal drives Finally- Subaru drivers love to go 35-40mph in 20-25mph zones…. Yet - as noted above- wimp out if any fun corners arrive I put THOUSANDS into my wrx and it never handled even remotely close to my completely stock 370z…

Only part way through, so maybe you cover this. But, that's some of the appeal of vintage cars. Station wagons were boring Mom cars when I was a kid, but now they are cool 'longroofs'. A '79 WS6 Trans AM was a 'guido disco car' at the time -- cool, last of the breed car now. Saab 900 turbos were a professional's ride (tweet professors and archtechs) then but you need to be a pretty deep cut car person now to own one. So -- reputations change over time.

About half the time I go to the grocery store, someone is blown away by the fact I put groceries in the "frunk." They've never seen that before, and it blows their minds, lol. Nearly always in the left lane going slow, blocking traffic while pacing a semi in the right lane, they hate life, hate driving, completely checked out. On our typical travel for the holidays back to the IA from NC (2,000+ miles round trip) these things stand out beyond all other vehicles. When we see the left lane backed up the car at the front of the lane holding everyone up is 80% of the time a CRV.

I don't normally go 90 mph on the highway, but when I do it's because someone is left lane hogging for a long time and I don't want to miss my chance. So here I go, dropping my Miata into 2nd gear rev match we need too acceleration! Zoom, gear change! Going past!

Great episode! In Toronto the Toyota driver holds the crown and is always in your way! Most Subaru drivers in Canada are people who can't afford a good quality SUV (Prices continue to rise) and buy the Subaru's for there 4wd system. There also better on gas that the big SUV's. I have a Wrangler for daily driving and trips to the cottage. I like it because to me it's Classless.

Don't remember where I heard or read it, but supposedly the old Hondas with highbeams issue is actually that they put the wrong projector bulbs into their headlight housings so they spew bright light everywhere AND are impossible to see the road with since there is no focus... Don't quote me though since I don't remember the source

What brand today is the equivalent to BMW from 1998-2005? I can't find one. Alfa Romeo's offerings are fun dynamically, but they lack the rest of what BMW had at that time. Porsche is too expensive and exclusive to be the same-it's just more of what it has long been. Nothing in the VW group matches up, really. No Japanese brand lines up properly. Genesis? Except they're still not matching what the BMWs really were. I drive a BMW, but I chose one knowing I was compromising in so many ways to get what ended up checking more boxes than most others could (it's a crossover, after all...).

10:18 The problem with this is that Hellcats are insanely expensive in the Netherlands. Firstly, they don't sell them here so you'd have to grey market import one. And second, we have vehicle purchase taxes based on emissions... I think that says enough :P The cheapest Hellcat here is about €150,000 (US$160,000)

Sorry this is so long, but this is the best episode you've ever done imho, and speaking of my humble opinions, i have some more: 9:20 - 😂 The Camry Dent™️ says everything about a person. And America. 14:30 - but hey, at least that god-awful cvt keeps the dog from getting car sick🤷🏼‍♂️. Subaru drivers seem the most averse to G-loading. 15:30 - lol, that stereotype still holds, flat-brimmed vape bro got out next to me at the weed store yesterday. Pants have gotten tighter over the years, but otherwise, same thing since '04. 17:55 - Acura - the official car of Southeast Asian small business owners. 18:55 TSX wagon, please. Actually, one of every imperfect wagon from the early-oughts - IS300, B5RS4, Saabaru... all of 'em are sex. 19:30 - Alfa - Exactly this about Stelvio drivers, I'm really curious to see who ends up buying the -Hornet- Toenail though. 23:00 - RS6 Avant is the most desirable "new" car on the planet to me. IDGAF if it drives like the engine is mounted on a pole protruding 5 feet out from the front bumper, that shape and that sound are special. Oh what i would've give to see Audi put the avant backend on the RS5 2 door instead of the liftback 😔. 26:00 - Preach! Bentleys should have _real_ kanurled alyewmineeum. 33:00 - it would seem Derek's experience with Bugattis is influenced by talking to douchey owners, whereas Jason's is influenced by making chassis engineers cry. Funny you should mention that Elise... 😉 34:20 - Buick - Service loaners for the Chevy/Buick/GMC/Cadillac dealership. When they said "That's a Buick?!" I'm like "Oh. So _that's_ a Buick. 😢" The TourX would've been cool though, if they painted the cladding. Or told people they existed. 35:50 - Exactly, depends on which Cadillac. The Uber Black Airport Shuttle Escalade, the Hero V-owner (they've always been heroes, please note CTS and ATS wagons also on my list) 37:00 - Chevy builds trucks. And Corvettes. Everything else is an afterthought. 37:50 - I'm glad they picked one thing to engineer well, and they committed to it. I'm biased towards Hondas, but the Pacifica is _reallly_ good at minivanning. Just needs a hellcat 😉 38:10 FICA 200/300 omg😂 40:00 - Chargers are driven by cops, and the people who run from them.😁 (Magnum SRT-8, also on my list) 41:25 - omg Jake 🤣😂🤣💀 U effing legend. 44:20 - the new cop explorers have distinctive front marker led's to the civilian version. The previous generation's Sport model made me feel like an overcautious idiot more than once 🤦 46:00 - Hondas - magic in the 90's with double wishbones and manual transmissions, not so much post-bubble as they've tried harder to build Toyotas 47:35 - i started to say i would love a 3/4 scale ioniq5 and then 47:55 happened 😂 48:50 -I'm curious about the two competing design schools at Hyundai - the same company makes catfish-faced palindromic cars that make a Merc EQS look sporting. But if they make a pony coupe that looks anything like the Vision 74, then maybe this isn't the worst timeline after all? 49:30 - Gohsn embezzled Infiniti's soul. I can't wait for the infiniti crosscabriolet ariya derivative though. 51:25 - i totally forgot about that sportbrake existing. Never seen one IRL. I always think of F-type coupe or I/F -pace, in which case, at least its not a BMW 🤷🏼‍♂️ 53:15 - girls drive new jeeps, then guys pick them up used cheap. 55:15 - Outbacks really have replaced Prius drivers in the left lane, that's at least as true here in Seattle as it is in Cali. This was awesome, i hope you guys are still employed for part 2. (Protip, when approaching a red light with one car in each lane, get behind the Mazda) Thank you so much for the honesty. And for being 100% correct about every damn thing. And for reading all this, holy shit, oops

I find it interesting how much the image of certain cars differs between the UK and US. A regular Golf in the UK says literally nothing about you, positive or negative. A GTI might illicit a raised eyebrow of mild approval and a Golf R is either stolen, about to be stolen or being used in the process of unlawfully acquiring goods without payment

The channel you are talking about with the Aussies is YeahMad. I love them as well. Also I may be slow but I don’t find the Elantra N nearly as revolting as you guys. I almost bought one, but I am still scared of their motors. I have a ticking Hyundai in my body shop once a week. So I went with a BRZ instead. Much better. Idk what a head gasket even is.

That Subaru phenomenon absolutely does not exist that way in the northeast where the existence of the entity known as "winter" more or less dictates that you have either fwd or awd for your daily driver. This in turn makes the Subaru less of a choice of statement and more of a choice of practicality.
