Something I want from C right now is for it to adopt more things like half-float and better support for SIMD, which is now behind non-portable compiler extensions.

Outstanding ptesentation. Make sure to read their blog posts about the topic too!

Hare might become a suitable (simpler) alternative to C for new stuff in some use cases

I think it is a play on dorkus malorkus.

I am not sure if this talk is in the spirit of C. The programmers listening did not have the power to switch to the next slide.

please add statement expressions

I'm pretty sure the goal is to add some form of lambdas, that would cover the use case of statement expressions as well.
@hwstar9416 Жыл бұрын
@@oj0024 that would break the "existing code is important" rule. Tons of code out there uses statement expression already

@@oj0024 lambdas wouldn't cover the most useful usecases. If you look at SerenityOS, they use statement expressions for their TRY macro.

Hmm...The "spirit of C"? How about: 1) The minimal feature set required to build an OS kernel with a portable sort of high level language. After all C was created as a means to rewrite Unix in a highish level, portable language (from original assembler) so that Unix could be used on different architectures. 2) A small and simple enough language that one man can write a compiler for it in a reasonable amount of time. 3) Don't break old code.

Great speaker, but a terrible writer. Not a fan of his work on WG14 or his lack of professionalism in writing.

I've only recently come across his work and find his written style excellent. Given he puts his name to his opinion and makes them public for scrutiny. It would be good for you to put pen to paper yourself and publish your opinions on his professionalism (that does not meet your unstated criteria) so that your concerns can be given due consideration. Until then the opinion of a noncontributor does not contribute anything. There are a lot of low effort opinions out there not worth reading.
