i have nothing against the more recent ndp songs but i honestly very much prefer all these older ndp songs. Home, Together, Where I Belong and all the other classics. they are REAL classics. 10years down the road, they will still be those legendary ndp songs. and i sure hope 10years down the road, all these classics will still be sung during ndp and during national day celebrations in schools.

The woman dressed in traditional clothing is supposed to represent old ways and traditions (maybe 2nd millennium), whereas the man in the spacesuit is supposed to represent the future and all the things that are yet to come (3rd millennium). The marriage scene is supposed to represent a 'marriage' between the old and new, accepting the future without abandoning the past. The spacesuit is also seen earlier in what appears to be a museum exhibit. In the marriage scene, people seem to be confused and surprised to see the man in the spacesuit with the woman. I'm assuming that this to make a statement that the future is not something distant from us; the future is here and ready. One last observation I find is that the way that the spacesuit is masked could mean how the future is still unknown to us, but we should be ready for it. Sometimes you never know how much meaning there could be in a simple music video.

first heard this when i was 8. this is truly one of our best ndp video. evelyn tan's voice is so smoothing and dreamz fm expressed the spirit of singaporeans. Singapore is very different today, the ideals of the past seem to be fading, complains and unhappiness just seem to accumulate. the video reminds me of the happier times when i felt that i belong to Singapore, and people were striving for their best in each of their role and content (even proud) of what they have. may the past be our hope for a better tomorrow as a nation (:
@theredrobin94029 жыл бұрын
wan tinwai you're wrong about the second half. looking at the world, at the US, at everything. you should still feel very happy about being Singaporean or belong to singapore. at least we have police officers we don't need to be afraid of. people here, even the penniless, are still very proud of what they have and we do strive hard for the best.we still protect the porcelain rice ball given to us so long ago, with our all. About the unhappiness stuff, you believe some studies and surveys? it may even feel that way at times, but cant you see how thats not true? during our worst episode of haze, it was singaporeans who helped others giving out free drinks and masks. again at LKYs death, our compassion for each other shone brightly once more. normal people, not just business stuff made the wait in the long queue much more bearable with drinks umbrellas and what not. again at the sabah quake. our happiness is still evident, otherwise well be like the USA with race wars. since you were 8 when this song came out, you must have a lot of experience in life on such matters,no doubt. however comparing singapore to the past is not realistic. with time and technolgy, we change. its very possible to see us lookoing out for each other online. however, it can be seen in reaL life too. just have to look for it.
@wantinwai9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. It is interesting to see a different point of view and insights. Indeed, in terms of quality of life rankings, Singapore ranks at the top of all international benchmarks. But happiness, when compared to others, gives us a false sense of superiority. I am not saying that I am not proud of being Singaporean. I am, and I appreciate everything our forefathers have done in developing our nation and the shiny accomplishments we have accumulated over the past decades. But sense of belonging is also about feeling comfortable to not just participate in the community, but also in the political process. It can range from getting involved in the grassroots or writing opinion pieces on newspaper. I am not even touching on the topic of freedom of expression here; instead, it is the increasing hostility and negativity between supporters of opposing parties that worry me. It could potentially hinder constructive politics from continuing, with political candidates focussing on 'trashing' each other. Prudent policy debates and careful analysis may be sidelined. Yes, we are changing in every possible ways. Change is constant, but there are intangibles that should remain in our core. If not the question of "Who we are?" would be laughable. I disagree that reflecting on the past is unrealistic. Since young, my parents have taught me that improvement is measured against one's self, rather than against others. It is through this that we developed self-motivation and fulfilment in life.

Reading your comment in 2024 and still 100% agree man.😢 We have lost the ability to create really good NDP songs, and the ability to debate constructively in a civilised manner.

I label this song as Auld Lang Syne u know? Here are the reason(s) 1. It was end of the 20th century and 90s decade 2. It was late Ong Teng Cheong's last NDP as President. My friend has given birth to a baby boy named after him.

Let us be together aspire to achieve No matter what, no matter when, working hand in hand Let us go the distance, reach for goals that shine Creating our future, with everyone in mind Together we make a difference, one voice, one destiny We remain undivided, our hearts in harmony Together we make a difference, our friends, our families We will share a special dream, together we feel the Singapore heartbeat Let us find in our strides, new strength to go on by Nothing is ever easy, we have to hold on and strive Let us never be afraid, if we have to change our ways Through the years, we'll always stay, one in every way We will share a special dream Together we feel the Singapore heartbeat Singapore heartbeat

The fact that this song is produced as a reply to the 1996 Summer Olympics theme song: Gloria Estefan's "Reach" was daring and bold, and it doesn't dissappoint. Released 1 year after the horrific and accidental live broadcast of Indonesians beheading ethnic minorities live on Singapore TV on the 10pm news on Channel 5; and Malaysia at the peak of its neo Nazism then, "Together" and the NDP that year showed Singapore small, racially harmonious but not integrated. Nevertheless, the celebrations and choice to embrace diversity, is something that ultimately paved the way for today, and sets Singapore apart from Hong Kong in a way that the latter's residents will never truly understand.
