Mahabharat at FTII: Yudhisthir speaks to protesting students

Students of Film and Television Institute of India are on an indefinite strike protesting the appointment of BJP leader and actor Gajendra Chauhan as the premier institute's chairman insisting he doesn't have the credentials for the job. For the first time now students and the chairman come face-to-face with the former asking the latter some tough questions.

I've lost sympathy for the ftii student riot/strike. They are obviously not people seeking a meritorious person to lead them, they are seeking a person to cosy up to get favors and approach based jumps. For television, how can they call an actor who has starred in an excess of 600 television serials unworthy or uneducated, if anything that veteran can teach these uncouth goons a thing or two in acting at least sincerity they fail to portray. None of them will get a single spot on a serial with this attitude, leave alone their dreams of featuring lead roles in blockbuster movies. The chairman only does executive decisions, the students are questioning their faculty's ability to teach or their's to learn, where does the chairman figure in this scheme of events. None of these 'mamma's boy or daddy's gal's have what it takes to make it as anymore than an annoying forgettable crowd scene as they are now. They'll need a lot of polishing, if ever get the chance, in soap operas- serial dramas before they hope for a godfather or scout to scoop them out to the movies. The film students might have forgotten but general public hasn't. Films came to India only after popular religious theatre play compelled Dada sahib phalke to make 'raja harishchandra' movie in 1913 or so. The first cinematographic venture in India. Your films have a lot more to owe Hindu religious sentiments than you previously knew. In simple words it should be spoken once and for all, CUT THE CRAP & GET TO STUDYING, YOU'LL NEED IT.

Don't know much about filming but all I can say that Mr. Chauhan should get a chance to perform at-least for 6 MONTHS. If he is good, let him continue till the end of his tenure else replace him. But he should get a chance to show his work and students should allow him to do that PEACEFULLY.

A Chairman's job is not doing administration!!! Thats a side job, mostly for the Assistants. The Chairman needs to be a stalwart so that he can put up the vision! you see the point is the eligibility of the person appointed, it doesn't matter if this was a BJP or Congress or XYZ led Govt. appointment, its about the credibility, here is an analogy to understand why this isn't political- if one were to search for a eligible person for the appointment of a Director for a Heart Institute, wouldn't it seem completely senseless to appoint a Dentist, who has had 50 years of experience in the field, after all he is a doctor too? Could not Mr. Chauhan have a chance despite being a follower of a guru or Mr. Modi ? Let the FTII run for a few months under his leadership and see if he has the right capability. Comparison leads to elitism and is it not a form of fascism ? It is a bit silly to see people arguing including famous filmmakers like Mr. Patwardhan. Could we not see what Mr. Chauhan is worth ? Is he going to walk the talk ? We are living in a world where good quality videos and films are made and shared through social network. To say that FTII is the only place where such a talent can be nourished seems far fetched. There are other things that the students should be fighting and perhaps use this time to make some good documentaries.
