What has Modi achieved? Dr. Manmohan is criticised for policy paralysis but what good economic policies has Modi pushed through.

@Sanjay Nair Yeah that's petty much the whole story of Modi Govt. Some good things. Some bad things. Although recently he has brought some reforms in agriculture and labour, and he had previously brought the new Bankruptcy Code, Scrapping of ancient Laws restricting privatization and disinvestment in various sectors, and to some extent, GST, as it might benefit in the longer run although it has done its damage in the shorter run. But still, he has got a long way to go before we even think of comparing him to our Reformist PMs like Narasimha Rao and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

@Sanjay Nair Manmohan Singh was fine, I guess. It's just that the fact that he didn't have majority in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha resulted in him not being able to do any significant reforms in his 10 year tenure. His first term was fantastic in my opinion due to the very fast economic growth. But his second term in office was marked with a lot of scandals and corruption. In the second term, it was actually Sonia-Rahul who were running the govt. as they didn't want Manmohan Singh to steal all the limelight and praise.

All rhetoric and puranic mantra! There is no quick fix for the current economic melodrama. First, ‘Strategy for New India @75’ document recommends a number of steps, including increasing the investment rate and reforming agriculture” are nothing but putting the old wine in a new bottle. Since 1952, Government after Government only paying lip service to agriculture. Greatest tragedy is the agricultural pricing policy is used, only in India, as a tool to manage the inflation! Ultimately the farmers are asked to subsidise the consumers and all farm subsidies are either boomerang or fly-in-fly-out items and benefiting the farmers. Second, an annual rate of growth of 9% by 2022-23 is essential for generating sufficient jobs and achieving prosperity for all. The real growth rate in terms of purchasing power parity (real exchange rate depreciated by 7.55) is zero right now not 8%! Third, “India’s tax-GDP ratio of around 17% is half the average of OECD countries (35%) and is low even when compared to other emerging economies like Brazil (34%), South Africa (27%) and China (22%).” That indicates the beneficiaries are growth (higher income groups and corporate elites) are not taxed or not paying the right tax. India’s per capita income is about $2,000 U.S. dollars, still well below that of other large emerging economies Brazil ($10000), South Africa and China ($7000 each). Finally, the argument that demonetisation will continue to contribute positively may be a music to the politicians not for the common people.
