Many Indian experts often speak as though they have a deeper understanding of Bangladesh than Bangladeshis themselves. It is surprising to see such a lack of depth in their analysis, as they often fail to grasp the complexities of Bangladesh's socio-political landscape. Over the past 17 years, India and China have, at times, acted in ways that appear to disregard the common sentiments of the Bangladeshi people. Their support for fascist Sheikh Hasina, in some instances, despite numerous facts of extra-judicial killing, human rights violation, enforced disappearances, electoral manipulation, genocide, and killing of hundreds of innocent students thus isolated her government from the general populace and made her cult for their vested interests. One must analyze the situation not through a narrow lens, often emphasizing religious sentiments. In contrast, Bangladesh is a democratic and liberal country where religion-based political parties, unlike India's BJP, have not gained significant political power. Although Bangladesh is a Muslim-majority country, it is not driven by fundamentalist ideologies. All international partners need to understand that Bangladesh will not allow its territory to be used for any vested interests except those that align with its national security. India’s support for Sheikh Hasina, which included her taking shelter in Delhi, has sent a negative message to many Bangladeshis. Geopolitically, Bangladesh values respect from its neighbors and seeks equitable treatment. We welcome Indian Defence Miniter Rajnath Singh- 180 million people are eagerly waiting with red roses. It would be wise for all international partners mainly India to initiate fresh dialogues based on mutual respect and common interests. This approach would foster better people-to-people relations and avoid placing all hopes in one basket to further mistakes that are already made by BJP-led foreign policymakers. If anyone seeks to understand Bangladesh better, it would be more effective to engage directly with Bangladeshis to avoid biased opinions.
