'Accepting Depression Huge Step Forward': Deepika Padukone On India Questions

On World Mental Health Day, actor Deepika Padukone discussed about her struggle with depression during the filming of Chennai Express in 2014. Speaking to NDTV's Prannoy Roy on India Questions, Deepika also talked about her upcoming Hollywood and Bollywood films, Pierce Brosnan and Vin Diesel.

Thank u Deepika. I went into depression after I read an article about mid life crisis in India Today sometime in 1988-89. I had a feeling that at the age of 45 I had not achieved any of the goals I had set. I felt I was too busy raising family struggling to make ends meet. With little savings and no future in the job I held, there were no jobs for middle aged person back then. I took to drinking,fortunately l did not become alcoholic . Today at the age of 70 I am medically very fit I like my drink, love to eat but feel very sad about the years I lost.

@Akash Akks I narrated this incident only to indicate how vulnerable human mind is, an article can affect one's thinking. And also to let youngsters know that Mid Life crisis is for real, be forewarned to tackle this phenomenon. Male Menopause is also a reality. But male Menopause is less about loss of sexual desire, but more about loss of motivation etc.

Thank you deepika for championing the depression issue and coming out to tell the world that people with depression need special attention and need support. We come from a continent where speaking about your feelings are still considered a taboo by some. Where everything is expected to be good. Where everyone are expected to do well. This is really important. The fact that many dies just like that, a day they were happy and alright and the next day they commit suicide. Hopefully this initiative will help many. She is perfect for Bollywood. Fake enough to sell her depression story to gather fame and attention. Like wise Alia sold her sister's story. She came from riches and had tasted some amount of success. I don't think she really knows what depression is. Not that riches have no right to be depressed. But she seems fake.
