I love your narration style. You talk to your viewers the same way that many of us would talk to a fishing partner who's right there in the same boat with them. There's none of that yelling and whooping it up that most KZbin fishermen apparently think is necessary. I'm also a big fan of channel cats. Channel cats run big where I live too (big enough that news via the internet and InFisherman magazine has resulted in people coming from all over the Midwest to fish here in spring and early summer), but it's nothing like the Red River of the North!

I like it when you show a little of the peripheral bits from your trips during the video, i.e. launching the kayak, the drive to or from the spot, or just the terrain from the land around the day’s fishing area. This video had just the right amount of that element. If a person has ever had to launch a small boat from a muddy spot, it’s easy to identify with the first couple of minutes of this video. We don’t get channel that go much above 10 lbs around here, so that last one was a real treat to see. Thanks again for making content that’s clean enough to watch with my little boy.

That truly is a beast that you caught. When I was a kid in the early 60's, we fished the Red for catfish a lot. The odd thing is that I cannot remember anyone catching a cat over 10 lbs. Then about 20 years later the stories of big cats started to roll in. I even caught a 37 inch cat (PB) around 1988. Now it is not unusual to go out and catch a 10 to 20 pounder. I wish I could explain it, but I can't.

They cleaned the trash out and started to watch what was running into the red. After the big flood and they removed all those houses on the greenway in Grand Forks the fishing sure did improve. Even the walleye have gotten bigger, I caught one that was just over 25 lbs of the mouth of red lake river where it flows into the red.

It is the same here in new york. Seldom do you see channels in the hudson river over 30 inches but in the cleaner waters of the state up to 40 inches and over 20 plus pounds

We used to go channel catfish fishing but with 12-14 pound mono line. The ones we were catching were like the first one you showed. Took sometimes 15+ minutes to get one in. Used to used chicken to catch an eel then cut that up for the bait. Fun to fight on mono line just had to be careful to not rush it and never touch the line.

You have to come out to Pennsylvania sometime. These things are amazingly abundant over here, so much so that they're actually LESS protected than the common carp. They're also really fun to pull in with a spinning combo. Something about a spinning reel drag fighting the species makes the experience a blast.

Hi1 Thanks for the great channel :) We get sharptooth catfish here in Africa. I have found that using a carp head hooked through the lips or alternatively a whole carp with the hook rigged to go through the body and out through the lower jaw and lip so it protrudes fully is the best method. If you have a centerpin such as an Alvey set up with no drag the fish feels no resistance when it picks up the bait and runs. All the fish I hook are caught squarely in the corner of the mouth - probs because they turn the fish around before swallowing it. Cheers and tight lines!

If you like fishing for big cats, you should make your way down to the mid Atlantic to the James River near Richmond. There are many 50+ pound Blues swimming deep and an occasional 100 pounder (I never caught one) but man it’s fun catching those big catfish. Some of them don’t even fight anymore they’re so used to being caught! Thanks for the videos Matt. You’re the best!

That’s pretty much how I got back into fishing after high school. I grew up on a lake and fished all the time when I was a kid but our cabin was destroyed when I was about 13. I didn’t fish much for several years after that until my friend bought a boat, we’d head out on the river when he got off work at midnight and sit out there until sunrise catching catfish, carp, and the occasional walleye.
