Chasing Channel Cats On My Home Town River

On this trip I'm kayak fishing for channel catfish on my home town river. I spent a lot of time fishing the Red River when I was a kid so it's always fun to head back out there for a day on the water!

I fish in Minnesota and catch plenty of large river fish out of the Mississippi, MN, and St Croix rivers. PB is 56" lake sturgeon, 30" carp, 28" channel cat. There are plenty of large fish here (those PBs are nothing like what I've seen posted)!

Guiding the kayak towards the bank while also fighting a big catfish with the other hand, catfish is pulling him, and current is going as well. Very tricky to menuver like that.

@@Graceclaw he was basically mental mathing like 19 different things while using whole body intensity while trying his best to make sure he doesn't lose his fish and also going backwards into a perfect spot to quick-drop his anchor so he can then relax and bring the fish in before it gets too tired or swallows the hook. It looks exhausting but he shrugs it off because fishing.

I remember fishing the RR as a grade-school kid in the early 60's. The one big difference is that we caught our cut-bait with cherry bombs and silver salutes. We would pack the firecrackers with mud and throw them in the river, and up would float a bunch of small carp and suckers. Besides that nothing much has changed. On a final note: You have a gift for making great videos.

My family and I lived on the mighty red from ‘95-‘02 (through 2 major floods) with 5 of those years in Fargo. My kids all learned to pull up and reel down on those channel cats :) It’s great seeing that river again. Thanks for posting!
