Wow! When I was a kid I remember the "plateia" being just dirt. It was about 1967 when they started building the plateia. Good memories!!!! I would go to Adonis and hang out until late in the morning and the police would come and chase us away. There was "Tsolias" a cafeneio next to the post office (now it is a Starbucks) and I would play biliardo kai tavli. Good times! Thanks for posting this video.

Επιβάλλεται να αλλάξετε τον τίτλο του βίντεο. Η ονομασία New Izmir που δίνετε στη Νέα Σμύρνη είναι και ανακριβής και ανιστόρητη.

Thanks again for a great video! and again... no need to put the phonetic script, I do appreciate the Greek and the translation in English but Greek is a very phonetic language, no need to clutter the screen. Keep up the good work!
@cubicle89

Thank you again delionita for this feedback, I remember you made this comment on another episode and have kept it mind. So far we have not received more requests to remove the phonetic script, so I have to assume it is helpful for some people. If more viewers comment on it, we will definitely reconsider.

Sure, I just saw your response to my previous comment. By the way one person said they agreed with me but don't worry too much. I love the videos, not just the language but to see parts of the country. It gets me excited about my trip to Greece next summer.

Yeah, I also think it's not so necessary, but I don't know how many people rely on them. Also, big thanks for telling the people to talk slowly, even though the Greeks like I think many Mediterrean peoples normally speak pretty fast! It helped me a lot getting along with identifying and translating the words.😊 Greetings from Augsburg, Southern Germany

These are excellent videos and I have watched all of them several times already. I have watched the earlier ones even more, so often that I could tell you who says what and in what order. I try to step up to videos without subtitles but it is difficult, for example an interesting news broadcast, but I find that, even though I might understand some or even much of it, my mind tires after one or two minutes and goes wandering off. I used to watch some Thomas the Tank Engine (a children's programme) in Greek and also watch the English versions for the translation but they were taken off KZbin, presumably because of copyright. I also find it impossible to get Greek radio podcasts although it is usually possible to get these in most European languages. Has anyone got any suggestions where I can get subtitled material, podcasts, etc? I have read some Greek novels too, including translations of Westerns (cowboys), which were good for simple dialogue. Seoirse Mac Thomáis (George Thompson) was an English academic who used to teach in Ireland. He was proficient in Ancient Greek and picked up modern Green quite quickly (as I recall) during a long visit many years ago. He wrote about his experiences in his interesting short work Gach Orlach De Mo Chroí. That is the side of Greece I would most like to see if I ever visit again (if any of it remains). When I went to Crete in 2003 (the only time I visited Greece) I took a tape recorder with me and came home with a dozen tapes of radio programmes. There was an interesting Church broadcaster on the FM frequency, although I could not understand most of it. I was impressed by the constant use of traditional music on the local radio stations. It was comparable to Radio na Gaeltachta, which is the only radio station in Ireland that plays traditional music throughout the day. The local musicians were first-rate. There was one song a local woman sang at the apartment complex one evening and it was among the very best I have ever heard. One of the barmaids told me its name but I forgot it and have spent hours looking for it on YT! Dimitris, you have natural talent and you would do well on the television or on the radio in one-on-one interviews.

Thanks a lot for the long comment Sean and the feedback. Are you looking just for Greek audio or would Greek subtitles for English audio work for you as well?

Thanks for the video, but now I have even more questions: Who were the refugee from Smyrni? What were they fleeing? I'm guessing this has something to do with WWI and the Ottoman Empire, right?

i'm turkish and i think it has to do with the population exchange after ww1 and the turkish war of independence. most greeks in modern-day turkey were sent to greece and the turks there were sent to turkey. it was after the ottoman empire fell.
