“Love it to Death” is the first album I ever bought, and I am as fond of it today as I was in the 1970’s. I completely agree with Neal...he and bassist Dennis Dunaway were the premier rhythm section of rock, not just then but now. They’re always overlooked but their talent truly was/is phenomenal.

There’s 2017 YT video of the original lineup doing the old hits with Alice in a big venue. The band sounds like Alice Cooper with Neal and Dennis. God bless Michael but he has some baggage and so so health. But Alice is wrong for not making Dennis and Neal full time. Alice’s revolving door of nameless hired musicians cheapens and sterilizes the old material.

I met him 3 times, What a great guy! I have autographed drum sticks, Albums, and photos from him. He was more then happy to autograph for his Fans.

Smith, Bruce, Dunaway, the Alice Cooper Band has never gotten the recognition it deserves. Even today, the music seems fresh, ballsy and competitive.

Awesome interview!!! There was no better example of a perfect rock n' roll rhythm section in the early 70's than Neal Smith and Dennis Dunaway!

Neil has always been my favorite rock drummer, his beautiful work is timeless and speaks for itself, The first thought I had when I heard they broke up was wtf would Vince let the greatest rock drummer in the world get away?

I always envied his insanely long blonde hair. He had the perfect rock star look. He also had a unique rudimentary drumming style...perfect for the arrangements.

Great interview. A big man-hug to Neal. I saw Alice Cooper in December of 1973 on the Billion Dollar Babies Tour. I still play Love It To Death, Killer, School's Out, Billion Dollar Babies and Muscle of Love to this day. Those albums hold up well.

The "original" Alice Cooper band was so amazing! Neal Smith and his humungous double bass drum kit was a show in itself! No one, with the possible exception of Keith Moon, really had a stage set like his back then!

Absolutly loved Alice Cooper, best string of albums ever 70-74. And there all so grounded and smart. There just the best.

"I'm not a multi-tasker, it's hard to walk and chew gum sometimes".... being a drummer, especially one as talented as Neal, is the true definition of multi-tasking and Neal had that mastered.

In Northern Virginia there used to be this very very large roller rink that was all wood it was called the Alexandria Roller Rink and I saw Alice Cooper on their Killer tour. They did a lot of love it to death material and killer of course. What a great show and the acoustics in that all wooden building was really nice. Neal Smith was one of my favorite drummers back then and I wasn't really even a fan! I will say this... I can put on Love It To Death today almost 40 years later and it's still fresh. That was the quality of their music. I basically stop listening after Killer ... and moved on to other genre.

They always did in my books ,that was a very tight unit ,i dont know about live but in the studio dam, the first few records incredible buy the middle seventies , thats why they were on top

That’s the one thing that bugs me about Alice, he walked away from his best friends who helped make him who he was. I was heart broken when Welcome to my Nightmare came out and realized the original band was finished, and while I still loved the new record I also felt guilty for it.😢 I’m Guilty!

Rush 2112 you can tell that Neil doesn’t care for him. He asks stupid questions like “when did you guys get the cyclops?” It was Alice’s solo stuff. Do your homework!

I saw Alice in DC on the dirty diamond's tour. It wasn't a good experience. Lincoln theater I think was the venue. The show n sound was too big for the venue. But if the classic coop played it would have worked. I've had no desire to go see Alice again but if the classic line up did,I would. 🤘🏻
