The Neapolitan cake was inspired by Neapolitan ice cream, also known as harlequin ice cream, which was named in the nineteenth century and is a popular frozen dessert in Italian cuisine.
Many flavors were tried with in the early phases. The initial Neapolitan ice cream was prepared based on the colors of the Italian flag, which are green (pistachio), white (vanilla), and red (cherry). However, strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla became the standard flavors later on.
