Near Gilchrist Texas

A short (free!) ferry trip took us from Galveston to the Bolivar Peninsula, despite GPS advice to drive 200 km instead of the 15-minute ferry ride. Bolivar Peninsula is worlds apart from Galveston with wide-open spaces, uncrowded spaces and evening pelicans. Check out the stilt-houses around the RV park - they speak volumes about wave action that occurs regularly along the Texas coast.
