LYRICS:
IN ARTICULO MORTIS // At the moment of death
CAELITUS MIHI VIRES // My strength is from heaven
DEO ADJUVANTE NON TIMENDUM // God helping, nothing should be feared
IN PERPETUUM // Forever
DIRIGE NOS DOMINE // Direct us, O Lord
AD AUGUSTA PER ANGUSTA // To high places by narrow roads
SIC ITUR PER CHRISTUM // Such is the path through Christ
EXCELSIOR // Ever upward
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me.
There let the way appear, steps unto heaven;
All that thou sendest me, in mercy given.
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee;
Nearer my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone.
Angels to beckon me, nearer, my God, to Thee;
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
Or if, on joyful wing, cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I fly.
This arrangement of “Nearer, My God, to Thee” is comprised of texts from the beloved Sarah Adams’ hymn combined with fragments of liturgical texts in Latin used by the ancient church.
“Nearer, My God, to Thee” was recorded by Doxology, the a cappella vocal ensemble of the Department of Biblical Worship, a division of the Billy Graham School of Missions, Evangelism and Ministry of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Purchase “Nearer, My God, to Thee” and other great songs of praise sung by Doxology on their album “O Great Redeemer” available on iTunes: itunes.apple.c.... Doxology is under the direction of Chuck T. Lewis, PhD.
The video elements of “Nearer, My God, to Thee” were filmed at historic Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky, by Southern Productions of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Steve Thompson thanks for watching! This is performed by Southern Seminary's vocal ensemble "Doxology". The arrangement is in fact an adaptation of the BYU arrangement (as noted in the credits). Good ear!

A very fine job. Nice vocals, nice solos, nice harmonizing, absolutely impressive filming work. It's 9,5/10 to me only because no1 can reach the Lain Huuto level in this song. Very, very nicely done.

First of all, this is really great. FANTASTIC job, folks. A few pointers: You're rushing every so slightly. Keep that tempo locked down. Second, your bass is just a touch too quiet imo. I realize this video is from 4 years ago now, but I suggest bumping his vocals a bit louder and adding a touch more reverb to really flourish it.

Luke 6:32-42 32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. 33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. 34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. 36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. 37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: 38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. 39 And he spoke a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? 40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. 41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye. Luke 7:41-50 41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both, Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? 43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. 44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. 45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. 48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. 49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? 50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.

Such a powerful song and the arrangement is outstanding! Is there any way to get sheet music for this? It would be for our church's dramatization of the Last Supper and Crucifixion for our Easter outreach. The talent displayed is amazing as well, praise the Lord!

Blaine St. Music: your comment is five years old, so you probably have a copy by now. But just in case, here’s an answer. Go to the video by BYU Vocal Point, And go to the description. There’s a link to take you to the sheet music with a free download. There are several arrangements available, depending on the range of voices available to you with which to work. Choose your version, and the download is free. I hope that helps. Who knows, but perhaps we’ll see if organizations video here too soon. :-)

Lis James: As it says at the outset, this arrangement is a BYU Vocal Point work; go to the video where they perform it. Underneath the video, in the description box, you can find a link to take you to the sheet music. Choose the one for SATB, and the download is free, or it was a little while ago. May I suggest that any time you hear a piece that you’d like to be able to perform, that you check with the people who wrote and/or originally performed it, as they are the likely source to set you up with a copy. You sure are right about this performance. The sound engineer did a beautiful job of balancing all of the parts, so that we can really hear everything going on in the piece. I hope you got your copy two years ago, but if not, perhaps this will provide a little assistance.

It is bit uneasy to watch this video clip. On a one side, I quite agree with a message. Believer goes to Heaven to meet his Savior. But still, normal human being grieve when someone die, more so, if a great believer, teacher, missionary does. Could it be that a makers of this video never experienced grief of lost relatives themselves?...just a thought.

We do not weep as those who have no hope. There is scarcely a person alive who does not know the grief of losing a loved one, and there is a level of grief portrayed in this, but the point, as I see it, is that death is swallowed up in victory. The initial low, solemn tones, give was to a triumphant shout. I do not think this video was intended to belittle grief, but rather to portray the underlying hope when a believer passes away.

Bjorn Egan: Neither the music nor the performance is about prejudice and hatred. These are Christian people singing a song of faith and hope. That’s what it was when BYU vocal point presented it, and how it was arranged to be, to begin with. I think this gorgeous group has really honoured that message in a way that honours Christ. And isn’t that the bottom line? ❤️
