First things first: Congratulation guys, you made it - well done! Also thank you for using the right gear (mountain hiking shoes etc). That was certainly a strenuous and tiring hike. Yes, the difference in altitude is easily underestimated. I was also totally exhausted after 3/4 of the hike when I did this tour around 20 years ago. Camilla was certainly one of the reasons you didn't give up made it to the end, so some extra kudos to her. I'm sure you had a good night's sleep in the hut after all that exertion. I can't remember if I recommended it to you - but for those who want to try it themselves: I recommend that you book one of the twin rooms for the Gotzenalm in advance. They do cost a bit more, but you have a bit more privacy and won't be disturbed by the possible snoring of others. If you loved the view, here maybe another recommendation - a shorter one day trip (3 hours hike in total) with a spectacular view. Go to the town named Farchant and hike through the Kuhfluchtwasserfälle (fleeing cow water falls) to the viewpoint Schöne Aussicht (nice view). You'll find it on google maps. There with nice weather you'll have a spectacular view of Farchant, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the surrounding alps.

Gorgeous - I'm glad you shared the bit about your parental concerns, especially with you having a physically impaired mother. I'd immigrated to the Netherlands several years ago from the Colorado Rockies, where I'd lived and raised a family 7800 feet (2.38 km) above sea level. At the time, I was quite fit but, these days, and with an ankle injury I'd unfortunately struggle along on such an albeit breathtakingly beautiful ascent. So, yes, if able do take these paths less travelled and hike these golden gems. But, if not, the alternative is fine for those who can't too. 😊

We are so happy that people with limited mobility can access such a beautiful part of the Alps...because accessibility is not top priority in Europe unfortunately.

Last year…June 23’, we drove to Eagles Nest and Koniggsee and it was amazing. We were able to skip the strip mall. Didn’t even know it was there!!

Incredibly informative! I’m so glad i stumbled upon your video one day before my planned trip to Königssee. Thanks to your video, we took the Königssee-Königsbachalm-Kessel hiking route today. Though now (late Oct) Königsbachalm was closed and one of the pier workers advised against us to go on the hike to Kessel (he mentioned dangerous condition? but it was fairly okay), it was still a good hike with incredible views for a one day trip. Limited English information about this trail online so i’m very grateful for your video! Glad to have enjoyed the Bavarian alps a little. Love from Malaysia xx

I was originally planning to go to the Dolomites and Wolkenstein, but my body is complaining about traveling exclusively by train and other public transportation. Combination of aback injury flare up and heat have caused me to stick to Northern Germany. Towards the end of my trip I can take a detour to Berchtesgaden and see the Koenigsee. I’m renting a car for a few days and only because I need to go from Dresden to Vienna in only a day and need to be hauling all my luggage with me. But-even though you are kinda negative about the tourist trap entrance to the lake-I really wanna see and experience the place. This is a great little video.

Great video. As a long-time visitor (from UK) to Berchtesgaden, I also avoid Konigsee, but this looked great. I even convinced my you-tube avoiding husband to watch your video. We typically hike from the other side of the Lake, up Grunstein, then across to Kuhrointalm and then look down on St Barthomew from directly opposite where you were. Beautiful part of the world. Keep on showing the unique experiences, I appreciate you not chasing the views.

Hi Ben and Camille I watched your video again and abdolutely love it. Then I read my last comment again and I realised that it is never a good idea to write a comment after a couple of pints. Now on a more serious note, i really like that you went to Königssee. I think it is the most mystical lake of Bavaria, but the swarms of camera clicking tourists take away a lot of its mysticism. The path you have found shows the mystcism the lake originally had. I also really like the shots you took of all the wonderful amphibians. Luckily you do not follow the trend of other youtubers chasing algarythms rather than delivering good content.

Yet another great vlog showing us what a “real”day trip can be away from the common tourist attractions. You both continue to provide quality information for the adventurous visitors. While I confess the hike is quite a bit out of my abilities (heck, the highest point in Florida is barely over 100 meters above sea level), I must say you made the hike look like fun. I was there last november and it was wonderful: barely any tourists and most seemed local. I hiked up unitl the Ice Chapel and it was my most difficult hike of my vacation.

Ben, I so agree with everything you have said. Sometimes one really get the feeling that most travel flogger and travel writers for that matter are only copying from one another. That is so sad and quite embaessing for the tourist industry, so thanks for showing the world, i.e. Bavaria 😅, in all its variety. And yes, I know a lot of people who would pay 30 Euros or more for a bunk at a mountain hut. Some of my Single friends started mountain walking only because of the mountain bunks. They say, it's a great way of meeting people and the good thing is that the people you meet can't run away, at least not for that evening. Of course that's not my opinion, I am only quoting my friends 😅

I have previously done a slightly different multi-day tour around the Königssee starting in Königssee late afternoon, taking the Jennerbahn up, staying at the Schneibsteinhaus the first night, then hiked to the Gotzenalm, stayed there for the second night, then hiked on to the Wasseralm and stayed there, then on to the Kärlingerhaus for the last night and then down to St. Bartholomä. Back to Königssee by boat. The views were fantastic all around. The scenery is great. There are other variations of a similar multi-day hike around the Königssee I recommend.

@@NearFromHome it is actually not that strenuous. I am not super fit and I was able to do it just fine. Keep in mind the entire hike is at altitude and if you start at the Jennerbahn top station you are already as far up as you will mostly be. It is roughly a 4 to 6 hour hike each day and you will hike down most of the altitude on the last day. In the summer all of the huts are hosted and food and drinks is available. During the week there should not be any problem getting a bunk bed or even a private room at the Kärlingerhaus. There are also other areas in the alps where you can do multi-day hut to hut hikes. Most of them are operated by the Alpine Club.

As a Bavarian, only 1h drive from Berchtesgaden, I´m more than once a year in this beautiful mountain region. Hiked several times to the Gotzenalm on different paths. The view from Feuerpalfen is really gorgeous. Also the view to the Watzmann mountain, one of the most famous mountains in Germany. Regarding the showers: Mind you are in the middle of the Alps, nothing much around. No communal water supply, no grid electricity. They drive all the goods (and diesel) the same way up where you walked. Really! These narrrow serpentines! They have a diesel engine at the hut. No hot water and no showers are certainly no exception in this deserted Alpine region. Having hot water and showers would be a huge effort to run. Maybe we meet next time ... then maybe we get more clear views. Near the Feuerpalfen there is another viewpoint .. in direction Bad Reichenhall and Salzburg, a great place to watch the sunrise. You can skip Königssee, but for sure you miss something.

@@NearFromHomecould be but it’s been a tourist spot for decades. My aunt has pictures of the lake frozen and covered in snow from the ‘60s. I’ve been there in winter too. Magical and tourist free. As for the Eagles Nest ? I’m never going to go there as I don’t regard it as a tourist destination. Visiting it, for me, lends legitimacy to the awful time it represents. Love your videos because of your enthusiasm. Keep ‘em coming 😄😄.

Popular with US Americans because of the "history" (the German one only goes from 33-45 😜), apart from the building (where he was rarely) there's not much left. We combined an overnight in Salzburg and Konigssee so took the bus from Salzburg to Konigssee. We went in May and the only bad part was the queue for the bus to get back to the train station to go back to Munich. Otherwise we loved it. Especially the beer garden at the end of a short hike.

Wife and I spent 2 weeks in Bavaria last Sept, Berchtesgaden and Konigssee were highlights for us and I’d spend more time there if I came back. I think you’re being a little too critical of a truly stunning area. We did have a car and we stayed in neighboring Marktschellenberg. As for things to do in the area I liked the scenic drives around the alps gorge hikes and the Jennerbahn.

Great watch. I was fortunate enough to visit Königssee in 2020, just after lockdown. Hotels just about open again, every other shop closed, international travel still suspended. Way less touristy than other times. I was there to hike in solitude, and that's what I did. Tourists are mainly on the boats and on Jenner (don't go there.) Kesselsteig was sadly closed due to rockslides/treefall. That would have been a great option. I'm not a big fan of the sleeping arrangements in mountain huts, so I had to be back in town every evening. I earned a few sceptical looks when booking a one way ticket to Salet, but can recommend the hike along Obersee and across the mountain to Schneibstein, though it is a tough one. The other beautiful hike I did went from St.Bartholomä to Kährlingerhaus. Initially wanted to end that in Salet to not go the same way back, but the fear of missing the last boat there was too big...

@@NearFromHome it really is a nice view from up there, but it is a crowded one even on the worst day. Take the Jennerbahn (if you must) and walk up to Schneibstein or Hohes Brett. That's where the real beauty is. (I take it you got up to Watzmann, that's not a trip I'm comfortable to make in one day)

Hello there! Two little things about the hike: Why didn't you use your poles when going up? You can walk a little bit faster, it's easier for your legs and a good training for the shoulders and the muscles around. I would recommend to walk down along one of the others paths, maybe to Sallet at the end of the lake - so you see completely new things at the second day... Fun fact about Königssee: not far from the deepest point of the lake, there is a car laying around - someone tried to cross the frozen lake, but the ice was a little bit to thin. Last time when you could walk across the ice until the end of the lake was in 2006, masses of people walking and skiing...

Why do I enjoy watching other people suffer so I know not to? I will not be attempting that monster of a hike on my upcoming trip. To speak to your point about the travel industry, one of the things I love about your channel and that sets you apart is that the bulk of your videos are in one area. You aren’t passing through. So you can show more, and deeply compare more, of the options we are evaluating as we plan our trips. Any channel that moves around a lot could never show the depth you do.

We went to the Kehlsteinhaus in July well worth a visit in my opinion. After we visited the nearby museum we were told at the ticket office that the Kehsteinhaus was closed due to the number of visitors ( it was only 1 pm ) Luckily we were staying in Berchtesgaden for four nights so we went up the next day .

The lake itself is gorgeous, tourist trap or not. You two carried way too much stuff, for basically one day of hiking. You probably didn't need 70-80% of what you had there (it's amazing how much stuff you really don't need when you have to carry it on your back, especially for several days).

Yeah, I mean the bags were mostly empty. I just refuse to buy multiple sizes of hiking backpack. Mostly we had tons of water, the camera equipment, chargers, and etc does take up more room than I’d like though. We’ve done a lot of multi-day Camino series before in Spain and Italy, great videos if you haven’t seen them, and we definitely packed a bit too much for that first one in Spain.

He probably meant just to meet other local bavarians (instead of tourists). Even for other non-bavarian Germans their dialect might become very challenging to understand, if you want to have a conversation.

They really kept to themselves. We are used to Americans making small talk with strangers in settings like that. They were also very strict with the schedule. We did not see any naked Germans though! :D

Exactly. They were all speaking really heavy dialect, and all seemed to know exactly what was going on and what to do, when to do it. For the first time in a long while everything felt “different” and I felt myself as an outsider. It was really really nice though and I loved the experience.

Hiking trails, no 5* hotels in the Alps. So you can experience adventures in pure nature. Fantastic experience. If you can't do that, don't go hiking. Stay in a 5-star hotel in a crowded, noisy and smelly city.😅🤪😜

@@timothymcgregor9249 i do watch this channel because i love Bavaria. have been many times and will be there in september again. My only problem is the way they put down other youtubers like they are doing so much better . when they are really doing the same thing, walking around town with the selfie stick trying to get material for the gram and youtube. the whole influencer scene is a little cringy and is ruining small secret spots everywhere. just my two cents
