Join us for the first day of a three day weekend in the Immortal. In this video, we explore the famous town of Oberammergau, know for its Passion Play performed every ten years. Later, we walk an hour through the Amber Vally to the lesser know town of Unterammergau to explore the Schleifmühlklamm, producer of Europe's finest whet stones. Finally we end the day with some ice cream and dinner at our new favourite brewery.

I was delighted to see you walking the cycle track from Oberammergau to Unterammergau. I cycled that way from Oberammergau to Partenkirchen via Murnau in 2020. Fabulous area. I first visited in 1970 for the Passionplay. Returned in 2019 and 2020. A lovely part of the world.

@@NearFromHome - it was loads of fun. I was drafted into the US Army during the Vietnam War and expected to be ordered to go to Vietnam. Instead, I was sent to Oberammergau. Our PT (physical training) was skiing (for free) on Thursday afternoons in Obergammergau and at night we would ski in Unterammergau. The lift tickets were cheap enough that even on Army pay it was easy. The area was pretty and rich back then, but even more so nowadays. Nice video.

Nice video. I woke up remembering this town.. my family lived there for a couple yrs 96/99 because my father was in the 🇺🇲Army...I remember being in 3/4th grade just running around Oberammergau like nothing😂 It's so beautiful there. We went to school in Garmisch. The yrs in Germany were everything for me. I remember having a lot of Ditto mouse accessories. I also remember a German nurse who I'll never forget named Nadine. She really looked out for me 😢😊

I haven’t done that specific alpine coast, but I wanted to! It looks great, and very similar to the alpine coaster I made a video about a few years ago. I can’t say it’s worth it for you, but I’d do it.

Another spreader of the Great Myth about Oberammergau! Oberammergau was not spared the Plaque, one in eight died, which is a huge loss. The Plague tended to kill quickly, but also stopped quickly. By the time the people were so heart stricken they held a meeting and prayed for the Plague to stop, and promised God that if the village was spared from more death they would hold a Passion Play every 10 years. And the Plague seemed to leave, and people showing signs of the Plague healed up. That was in 1663 and the first simple Play was in 1634. About that time there were over 300 Passion Plays all over Europe! In 1770 Passion Plays were banned by the Pope and Clergy as they said that Miracles only happen once and not 300 times, so the recovery was something Human and not Godly. There was no Oberammergau Passion Play in 1770 either. But, afterwards the Villagers petition the Pope and said as they had made a promise to God that they did not want to break their oath, that´s the 2 fingered salute on their Coat of Arms, the Gelübde as they call it. Many, many Tour Guides keep spewing this totally wrong story about Oberammergau, I lived there for 15 years, was a waiter and ran bars there, and I have spent 40 years in the area where I am now a Taxi driver and mobile Tour Guide. Nice video, but I only watched the first 3 minutes of BS. Why don`t people read Wikipedia before wasting all our time?
@NearFromHome
@NearFromHome 9 ай бұрын
I don’t really know what the difference between what you are saying and what I said is? I don’t believe in Christianity or miracles so it’s all the same to me. I definitely didn’t believe god spared them because they put on a play. It never even crossed my mind people might actually think the village was actually spared due to a theatrical production. The village thought they were spared though, which was enough to kickstart the tradition. So in that sense it is very real, the town felt spared. Is it really my job to tell them they weren’t? What does it even mean to be spared of the plague though? That’s not a scientific statement; nor can it be quantified objectively. How many must not die for them to be considered spared? None. 1/10. 1/8. 1/6. No matter, To the Village it would seem it was as real as any other aspect of their Mythos, am I wrong for using their language? I definitely don’t think in this video I was pointing at a miracle and calling it a real affirmation of the truth of the Christian god. At least I hope not. That all being said minutes 3 onwards are really good, as are many of my other videos! You should watch them :)

Hi, is there a train from Munich to Murnau? As far as I can see on the DBB website, you have to take a train to Weilheim(Oberbay) and then a rail replacement bus to Murnau and then the second train. Same to Garmisch as well. Thanks for this gorgeous video. We were thinking doing Garmisch for Zugspitze but now not sure between that, Mittenwald and Oberammergau
@NearFromHome
@NearFromHome Жыл бұрын
yes there is a bus, but both those train line has been experiencing problems recently. Normally, you take the train from Munich to Murnau, and then take the train to Oberammergau. It also stops at several other villages in that area.

@@meganfinney1275 They have replacement buses! I think as of right now, you take the train from Munich to Weilheim, and then a bus from there to Oberammergau. You can check google maps to see if it changed
