NearFromHome has focused on daytrips in Oberbayern, but in this video we venture north, to Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the Franconia region of Germany. Come with us as we take the train from Munich for the weekend, discovering the aesthetic streets via a walking tour! In addition instagram's favorite, Plönlein Square, walk the cobblestone adorned alleys, circumnavigate the still intact medieval wall, and explore the Tauber Valley with us. Finally, we warm up inside the Käthe Wohlfahrt Weihnachtsdorf and Medieval Crime Museum. This town is insanely popular as it sits along the Romantic road, and has been featured by everyone's favorite travel dad, Rick Steves, but does Rothenburg ob der Tauber stack up? Come find out!

I saw this in a film in German class of 1987 never realizing that 3 years later on my student exchange trip to Germany would spend the Saturday before Easter 1990, Apeil 14,1990 , in ❤❤❤❤ this wonderful medieval town. We went into the City Hall and also visited the Medieval Crime Museum.

Just wanted to thank you for this video! We watched it a few months ago and it influenced us to visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber as part of our bigger trip to Germany. We took the train(s) from Nürnberg and did end up with a delayed train so thanks for the tip not to take the last train of the day! We decided to stay two nights to be able to get the most out of our time here. We walked the walls today, amongst other things and agree it's a highlight! We love your channel, thanks so much! Also going to Grainau and then the Alsace region of France, that was also Germany 😂. Best, Jenn from Seattle

I am or was a 2D animator, so anything that looks Pinocchio is a favourite. I traveled between London and Munich in my VW Joker Camper to animate commercials for over 10 years. One Xmas time I found myself in Rothenburg and camped nearby (in the snow). late in the evening I stood in the snowy main square, snowflakes coming down and the local choir practicing Xmas songs nearby...I remember thinking "moments like these don't come around very often" and I was right...warning to everyone...do not go in summer, beware of tourist trucks...

One of my favorite cites to visit. One tip, if you're entering the city through the large archways, look for a sign that says something like "Nur für Fußgänger" or simply "Fußgänger." This will point to an access point so you can avoid the traffic. Also there are several small entranceways that are adjacent to the parking lots if you drive. I also recommend walking the wall, unfortunately there is a cost for going to the tops of some, if not most of the towers, worth it though.

Thanks so much! We love learning about the history that shapes the sites we visit! It’s a shame to realize many of the historical downtowns in Europe were actually destroyed during the war. @@NearFromHome Alter Keller and Gasthof Butz probably have the best traditional german food here. There are also a few Italians to choose from and I’d say Italia does it the best but my opinion on that may be biased because I know the owners personally lol. @mazeonyt
@mazeonyt Жыл бұрын
@@sebastianbar1929 depends on what your parents are looking for? I'd say it's a really rare town because it's one of the best preserved towns from the middle age. also the landscape from the burggarten is just stunning. there are a few museums you could mention, for example the one filled with local medieval stuff (rothenburgmuseum) or the medieval crime museum. most of the streets are just nice to walk through and you could also walk along the entire wall. there is actually one medieval tower you can enter. Other than that there are of course these small local stores scattered all around the place who sell unusual stuff. the food is really good in most restaurants. I'd recommend checking out RothenBurger if you like Hamburgers. there is also a medieval underground jail you could visit. and of course the huge church. very interesting things. pick something you could convince your parents with lol.

I doubt, that Rothenburg is best preserved town in Europe. Don't be mistaken: Rothenburg was destroyed during the war. But they put a lot of effort to rebuilt the houses in a style which fits in, but it is not all original. Anyhow, with its fortification this is truely a town - not a village. For linguist it is interesting to know that English town, German Zaun (fence) and Dutch tuin (garden) are cognates: they have the same root based on a plot of land which was fenced off (sometimes even with a wall). Another note: medieval towns were compareable small for our standards, yet the biggest medieval town in what is Germany today was Cologne with 50,000 ppl. Followed by Magdeburg and Lübeck with roughly 30.000 ppl. In southern Germany Augsburg, Nuremburg, Regensburg, Ulm were fairly big with around 20,000 ppl. Since there was no modern Gernamy back then, one should mention Prague, Vienna, Danzig and Straßburg as big as well. But it is hard to believe that Rothenburg played in the same league with 6,000 ppl.

Thank you for this beautiful vlog, though rather too brief for my intense interest. Many years back, we were rushed through Rothenburg for a couple of hours, that whetted my appetite for more. My bad luck that I couldn’t manage to visit more often, though I lived in Erlangen for one & half years and spent many weekends in Nürnberg. I visited / stayed in Prien-am-Chiemsee (5 weeks), Wurzburg, München, Bamberg, Karlsruhe, Ditzingen, Am Berg, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Harburg (a few day trips), Seevetal (3 trips, total 11 weeks), Lüneberg (day trip), Hannover, West Berlin, East Berlin (once DDR, once BRD), Leipzig. I want to visit Germany again, but not sure if we can make it. We have the money and the time, but not the health any more. Rothenburg survived through three things. During the war it was forgotten to be bombed because there were no important industries nearby. In the 1970s the city was forgotten to be converted for cars and to put a wide street right through it. And otherwise the city was just lucky not to burn down by fire, as often happened when thatched roofs were still used.
@jensschroder8214

How a half-timbered house is built. First the scaffolding is created. The straight beams are only used for the front of the house, beams that are slightly crooked can still be used for the other sides. In the past, grooves and tenons were used, so a high level of strength can be achieved but fewer nails are used. The gaps were filled with a network of branches. Then comes the fun part. Clay is mixed with water and thrown onto the network of branches. What falls down can be used again immediately with a little water. Smooth out with water and let dry. Repairs are always possible with the same material as long as the wooden beams are in good condition. If the house is a bit crooked, that's not a problem either, it's often the case. The clay stores moisture and releases it to the outside or inside, which results in a good room climate in winter and summer. But the rooms are small, the ceilings are low and none of the walls are straight.

In '73, I do not recall cars or neon lights. It is a wonderful place. Was there off season, not many people around. Nuremberg was the hub, flitting to castles and other sites not too far. Took on a bit much for winter break senior year but it was unforgettable.

Rothenburg is fab, there is no doubt about that. However, wird got round and the tourist came in their thousands and still do. It feels more like an open air museum than a town people live in, a bit like Venice without the canals. Therefore we quickly left and stayed in Dinkelsbühl, also very nice but less overrun.

When revisiting Rothenburg odT in the summer or fall, plan a halfday stopp at the nearby "Freilandmuseum Bad Windsheim". It's an open air museum with historical buildings from the region that were deconstructed at their original sites and reerrected in the museum. Almost all of them are furnished authentically and depict how living and working was like centuries ago. And yes, the museum does have a Biergarten. I loved it there!!!!!!

So, there is definitely more then enough time see everything in Rothenburg in one day. It’s really not a big town. We only spent the weekend there because it takes us three times as long to see AND film everything. It really depends if you want to take one of your days away from Nürnberg to spend in Rothenburg though. That would be your call. I’m not super familiar with Nürnberg, and don’t really know how many days you would need to see everything. Maybe spend the first day in Nürnberg, and if you feel as though you’ve seen everything, do a day trip to Rothenburg or possibly even Bamberg for day two. 😇
@peter_meyer
@peter_meyer 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure, as Nürnberg itself is a well preseved medieval town too. If you arrive in Nürnberg first day afternoon and have to leave on third day morning it probably is less stress just wandering around in Nürnberg. A train to Rothenburg takes from 1:10 to 1:45 hours and you have to calculate the same time to get back. It's about 40-50€ per person for a round trip (or you get the "Bayern-Card" as Ben suggested).

When the Americas were discovered and their natural resources got exploited the major trade routes in Europe shifted. And something more abstract changed as well: the way of money. Rothenburg soon lost its once important position and fell into what we call "Dornröschenschlaf"- it became the proverbial sleeping beauty,a forgotten place. That saved it in its 16th/17th century outline. The same thing happened to Brugges in Belgium: the river silted up and that was it.

Rothenburg odT may be the best preserved, but there are plenty of minor cities that are well preserved. I suppose the Germans lost so much in the war that they really take care of what is left, even Rothenburg was bombed! I will soon continue my hike through Germany and will get to Rothenburg this time around, I am planning a rather short walk that day so I will have the stamina to really tour the city! Other lovely cities include Quedlinburg, Goslar, Celle, Bamberg, Hameln, Dinkelsbühl, Nördlingen and many, many more.

R.o.d.T. is one of the medieval gems, but definitely also over-touristed, especially in summer, and during Christmas season. I don't know which is worse but I strongly recommend coming there out of season, otherwise you will literally have to push your way through crowds of tourists in some of the spots. Visiting the upper townwall catwalk will become almost impossible in the summer as so so many people will push their way through those tight spaces that you can really get cases of claustrophobia. Careful: anyone above 5'5" or above 165cm should be wary of the low ceiling beams on that wall. Nope, they are not cushioned or softened, and nope, you can't sue the city if you knock your head in on one of them, you step onto those fortifications in full knowledge that what happens to you there by your own ignorance or neglect is on yourself, ok? 😁😁 Oh, and as a nitpicky BTW: Rothenburg ob der Tauber actually means Rothenburg above the Tauber river as it was situated on a shallow hill in the river bend. So it was both on and above the river. 'On' as in it is located 'on' the river geographically when seeing a map. But not (for the old town) actually directly on the river banks but rather physically 'above' the river, but close enough to control traffic (especially taxable trade traffic in the medieval times) along the river and the north-south trade road leading along at a little distance from the town.
@NearFromHome

Smart question! I would not recommend a daytrip to Rothenburg. The problem is, there's really nothing that compares to the town.
