Nearly 1.4k structures destroyed in wildfires in Ruidoso

Over 1,400 buildings, homes and businesses have been destroyed by the wildfires raging on in Ruidoso. More than 8,000 people evacuated around the affected areas.

Get ready for major disasters happening. I live in San Diego in Encinitas in a nice beach community. There are million dollar plus homes in Cardiff and Solana Beach that just lost their fire and earthquake insurance dropped by the insurance companies. I was told by my next door neighbor/insurance agent .

It doesn’t matter. We spent every summer there, and still say Riadosa. I think it means “Noisy Water” (the bubbling river that runs through it) Prayer in any case. I hope all natives, tourists, horses, pets and wildlife have been able to get to safety. There were hundreds of horses stabled at Ruidoso Downs, trials and finals all summer. This affects so many lives. The ski area is a major attraction as well. I’m worried about beautiful Cloudcroft, too. If anyone has real info, please share.

If the USFS says "only you can prevent forest fires" Then why do, they do prescribed burns knowing it is going to be windy? Last year they said they lit "pile" fires in January but come spring those piles burned down one of the poorest communities in North Eastern NM, A nice little village that dates back from 300 years ago. You have to have a college education in order to be hired as a US Forest Ranger. Does that tell us something about higher education here in 'Merica? They will also say it was started by lightning. I saw a map online for the 2024 year of prescribed burns and most are in the Rocky Mountain States. I doubt most of these fires are lightning caused. Hey USFS " if you play with matches or Bic lighters someone is going to get burned".

Why can’t a bunch of water haulers bring in water?? I know there are semi trucks here in Artesia waiting to receive a phone call. There are so many semi trucks here that carry many tons of water and can unload quickly and water down places so they don’t catch on fire. Any business that sends them would get an obvious write off so they wouldn’t lose any money . I don’t understand how we have probably hundreds of water trucks and none have gone to help.

They are naturally cyclically, the patterns different across a wide variety of flora and terrain, and many are impacted by man via building siting, recreation activities, logging or firebreaks or lightning AND the stopping or interfering of smaller fires that tend to burn understories in smaller swaths and create natural firebreaks when bigger blazes.come through. While I am not familiar with NM itself, I know our huge fires in CA are a combination of all of the above- with the most recent decade of terrible wildfires heavily being the result of the removal of old logging road firebreaks combined with instantly putting out all lightning strike fires in our vast national forest lands for do gooder eco reasons that in hindsight were illogical, countered Mother Nature, and after 40 years of cumulative build up of highly flammable detritus have lead to utter destruction. Repeatedly. Humans and their living sites exploding into wildlands with no buffers just meant WE get taken out along with nature itself.
