Nearly a Necchi -- The Singer 237-M-A

In this video, I show some of the similarities between the Singer 237-M-A and a Necchi BU. I also demonstrate some ways to create domino stitches and multi-point zigzag.

Thank you, I enjoyed your video very much. I have a Singer 237 in a treadle also (it was electric originally but I swatched it) and it is one of my favourite sewing machines - smooth, simple and beautiful. I also have a Necchi Supernova in a Singer treadle table (came to think about it once in the middle of the night when I woke up, and had to try it immediately - and it fit perfectly!). Sewing (and watching somebody else sew) "manual patterns" with a treadle is very relaxing, almost meditative. Greetings from Finland!

Hello James, love your videos! Thanks ! My thread always comes out of the last 2 ....what do you call those little metal deals that hold the thread in place down right b4 you thread the needle. Do you have that problem with your 237?

Those are the thread guides. I have had some problems with this. The guide on on the faceplate of the machine below the tension mechanism is the worst one. I think that I will do some experimenting and see if I can find an easy fix.

I just tried a pair of pliers to squeeze the thread guide on the front of the machine. It now works much better -- the thread has the be pulled tightly through it now and is not inclined to escape.

Have u changed the original solid hand wheel to a spoke wheel? Any adjustments need to be done to be able to do so?

Yes, I changed the wheel to a spoked wheel. I had to use a rubber belt from a vacuum cleaner to make the bobbin winder wheel connect. The best approach is the buy a new wheel with the bushing assembly to make sure that it fits. The 237 bushing is slightly different than the 66/201/15 bushing (this is the part that the wheel sits on). It is very easy to interchange (one screw).

Which machine in your opinion has the best feed dog that you have experienced and why?

Over the long term, I prefer the more agressive type. When I purchased the Necchi type for this machine, it was brand new -- and it fed very well indeed, particularly for knits. The problem with the less agressive type is that the teeth are small and tend to dull quickly -- if you can continue to purchase new ones, it might not matter in the long term which type to go with.
