Yes if you have one please do use it it can make a bit of a difference especially if you're sewing knit fabric or stretch fabric I think it just helps keep the thread lined up and there is less slack in the thread after the hook pulls it around and the take-up lever starts back up anyway thanks for watching and good luck

@andytubesewing19533 жыл бұрын
@@migi3976 Your model 347 machine uses 15x1 needles in sizes 9, 11, 14,16 &18. They come in different types like sharp point, universal point, ballpoint for stretch, jeans needle, leather needle, and for metal thread. There is also a nice top-stitch type. Many companies make 15x1 needles like this. Many people feel Singer needles do not have the original quality any longer. My wife prefers SCHMETZ brand lately and likes using the top stitch type b/c the eye of the needle is larger (easier to thread) jeans needles can also be called "heavy-duty" or "for thick material".

Singer Model 347 is a Standard Zigzag machine made to sew with one 15x1 type needle. It has a more advanced sibling, Model 348 which is a Special Zigzag Sewing Machine that can use two 15x1 type needles to sew dual stitching in straight or ZZ patterns. It came with two spool pins. The numbers/lines on the Needle Plate are simply Seam Guides. The line spacing is 1/8 inch. They are there for the sewist to align the fabrics to a line while sewing. The measurement starts at the needle, so number 5 would equal a 5/8 inch wide spacing. You can download a FREE copy of the Instruction Manual from the Singer Support page here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=347 48 pages of great info about using and maintaining the machine. Bobbin Plate = Rotating Hook, which is powered by a Timing Belt on the bottom of the machine, which is powered by a Vertical Shaft & Pulley that is powered by gears on the top of the vertical shaft. Some models have plastic gears that get old and break, but I don't remember ever having a broken gear on a 347. @andytubesewing19532 жыл бұрын
This just started? The machine is new to you? It's hard to diagnose a machine thru the comment section, but I can give some ideas to think about and check. When is the last time the machine was properly oiled? Starting on page 42 of the Instruction Manual it shows where to oil & grease the machine. If you do not have grease, at least put sewing machine oil where they say to. Even Walmart usually sells the oil for < $4.00. If you need the manual you can download a free copy from Singer Support on this page; www.singer.com/search/support?title=347 The motor belt could be slipping as it gets warmed up. It may be old and stiff. You can remove a side cover and look at it and see if it is frayed and stiff. Here is a video about changing a motor belt and setting the tension on it. It shows a different model than yours, but the motor and procedure are the same. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jH-vfZaVbrmjnrc Your motor belt is a common one used on a few models. www.amazon.com/Motor-Belt-196386-14-5-Singer/dp/B07CB8NSHD Your machine came from the factory with a "Button" Style foot controller (foot pedal) that uses stacks of carbon discs inside (carbon resistor) to control motor speed. The controller is, at least 50 years old and may have never been serviced. Lots of "Carbon Black" can build up on those discs and resist the electricity more than they should. That makes them hot (sometimes very hot) and the dirtier the carbons and the more resistance can make the speed of the motor very erratic and even make the electricity hesitate as it goes in and out of the controller on the way to the motor. The motor can strain, groan, slow down and/or stop and hesitate until the electricity builds up enough to sneak thru the carbon stack to the motor. You can buy a new carbon stack foot controller, or better yet an electronic style that never gets hot, but I've had good success cleaning and adjusting the original controllers and getting them almost 100% back to normal. It really depends on the condition of the carbon discs. I made a short series of videos showing how to do that and you can find the Playlist here; kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKL6ePPxLpmnWSzTyxPKTb71 So, laura, those are just a few things that can cause what you describe is you'd like to check them out you may be able to isolate and correct the problem. Model 347 is a nice household machine and quite capable of sewing clothes, slip coves, curtains, quilts, etc. Good luck and thanks for watching my Andy Tube Channel on KZbin.

Congratulations, Lea, and thanks for watching my videos. The bobbin for your machine is Singer Class 66, in metal or plastic. Your model 347 uses what Singer calls the Catagory 2020 needle. Today it is commonly known as a 15X1 Needle. It uses needle sizes 9, 11, 14, 16 & 18. The different styles are "sharp" for woven fabrics, "ballpoint" for knit fabrics, "jeans" for denim and heavier fabrics and "leather" for leather and faux leather. The 15x1 needle is available almost anywhere at local stores like Walmart, JoAnn's, etc. here in the US. Fabric stores, craft stores, and online at Amazon, eBay, etc. Same for the Class 66 bobbins; readily available. Since the machine is new to you, may I please suggest you follow this link to download a FREE copy of the original 52-page Singer Instruction Manual for your machine? It is full of instructions with pictures of all the controls and features of your machine, a great needle/thread/fabric chart, and instructions on maintenance and lubrication. Hi Andy, I know someone who has this machine (Singer 347) and her bobbin case is not turning to pick up the top thread. Any suggestions?
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
So the bobbin case never turns, just the hook the case sits in is what is supposed to turn. If the hook does not turn be sure the machine is not in bobbin winding mode and the center clamping screw (chrome knob center of handwheel) is tight to the right. If a friend loosened it to wind the bobbin they may have forgotten to tighten it back up. BTW, free instruction manual from Singer is here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=347 The hook is rotated by a timing belt on the underside of the bed. The belt goes around two pulleys and the pulley on the right is the "drive" pulley. If the belt is extremely loose or broken then the hook pulley on the left will not turn the hook to catch the thread but the right pulley would still be turning with the motor. You can tighten or replace the belt. kzbin.info/www/bejne/moiZmZR-qplgnrdm. If the belt is OK then see if the right pulley really does turn when the motor runs. If it does not then that may mean the gear on the top of the vertical shaft that turns the drive pulley is broken. That is rare for model 347. Some models have the gear used made of plastic and are now old & brittle enough to lose their teeth or even break apart. You can take the top arm cover off and peek down to the right of the camshaft and the left side below the gear on the horizontal shaft. You need a flashlight but should be able to see a gear. If there is no gear left or no teeth on the gear, then you know. I've never had to change a 347 top gear, but who knows? On many of the 4xx models, the plastic gear is long gone and I have replaced many of them. I even made a video about how to do it that has been watched 100,000+ times. (shows how common the problem is. At about 16:00 in that video I show the location of the gear to give you an idea of where to look on the 347. The gear video is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU Lastly, if the hook turns but the machine won't stitch it may have lost timing and you can use the belt change video to see how to reset the timing. This assumes you thread up everything properly. 😃 That should keep you guys busy for a while, maybe? If more help is needed let me know and good luck.

Andy Tube . Hello, thank you, Andy. I'm trying to determine if I can just do my quilt without using the second bobbin thread? I wasn't expecting to have to manage a second thread and just want to keep my first attempt simple. I just read somewhere that the bobbin thread finishes the top stitch with a knot. That's sounding like I need both afterall...
@andytubesewing19536 жыл бұрын
Yes, when using the bobbin thread it makes a "lock stitch" to keep the needle thread from pulling back out. If you sew with only the top (needle) thread it will unravel very fast and what you sewed will just come apart. Here are a couple of animated exampples of lockstitching. They show it beter than I can explain. Hope they help. Thanks for asking, kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnLGiIWhf5aeq7c kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGebYqybiNemg5I

Andy, my 347 has 2 spool pins. Do you know why?
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
I think you have a model 348, not 347. Model 347 has a one-piece arm cover and a built-in 2-pattern cam. Model 348 has a 2-piece arm cover that has a flip-up center part and a larger chrome knob you can remove to change to any of the 20+ pattern cams Singer made for it. The reason model 348 has 2 spool pins is that it can sew with 2 needles (so 2 needle threads) Model 347 can only use one needle with one thread. @andytubesewing19535 жыл бұрын
The 348Model is the top-of-the-line in the series and it does have metal gears on the horizontal & vertical shafts. You can download a free copy of the original 68-page Instruction Manual at this link: www.singer.com/sites/default/files/outdated_product/1317_348.pdf The difference is this Model has a flap opening on the arm cover that allows you to change the pattern discs, also called cams or pattern cams, to sew about 20+ different stitch patterns. It is a very nice, strong and capable machine for advanced domestic (home) sewing and crafting. Thanks for watching my channel.

I'm having serious issues getting my bobbin thread to catch and come up, and the video goes blurry right at the part I need. I've watched your video and someone else's, but my machine just isn't catching on the notch that spins around underneath the bobbin and I don't know why. I'm trying everything here, and even asked someone I know who runs a sewing workshop, but she's across the country. I can't figure this out. And I just snapped a needle because I adjusted the needle arm down thinking that it wasn't low enough to catch, so I guess I'm done for the night. I don't know enough about this to diagnose it. This is my first sewing machine and I can't even get the thing to run.
@andytubesewing19532 жыл бұрын
Oh my, this is serious 👀 Even though you asked someone "across the country" and I'. "across the internet" I'll try to help. Be sure you have threaded the needle and bobbin case properly. You can download a free manual from Singer about it as it won't be "blurry": www.singer.com/search/support?title=347 After that, for the needle thread to "pick up" the bobbin thread the needle bar must be adjusted to the proper height and also the needlepoint must lineup with the point of the hook at a certain time (timing). If you had all the threading/bobbin case done properly then it sounds like the timing was off b/c the needle bar height was wrong or the "point to point" adjustment was off. Here is a video for setting the needle bar at the correct height: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGHPhHeenbFgjK8 and this video contains timing instructions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/moiZmZR-qplgnrc Moving the needle bar down just made it low enough for the needle to his the hook and break. So, needle height + timing should solve the problem,. Best of luck, and thanks for watching my channel.

@@andytubesewing1953 thanks for replying and trying to help. I forgot that I wrote this comment last night. Turns out it's a timing issue. Once I disassembled parts and watched it, there's no way to get the rotating notch (the bit the bobbin sits in) to catch the thread because they're so off sync. I tried to watch videos on how to fix this but the bottom of the Singer 347 is so different it's just too far out of my wheelhouse to address. The local repair shop said it'll cost "$99 and up" to fix and I'm not sure whether to "invest" in the repair right now for the Singer 347. Learning to use a machine is a lifelong goal so I actually just bought a Kenmore 13660 for $40 this morning and brought it home. Here's hoping it works out better! Thanks again for trying to help. When threading the needle, does the thread rest on the spring or should it go inside the spring loop somehow?
@andytubesewing19536 жыл бұрын
It pulls up against the bottom of the spring and then loops over the little metal "finger" towards you. So the spring rest on the thread to give the thread tension ob the upstroke while sewing. It does not go inside the spring loop. Sorry, this video is not that good. One of my early attempts at filming. Here are some newer videos. They are on a different machine but explain better. The thread is getting wrapped around bobbin parts on my machine. Bobbin makes a scraping noise, too.
@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
Although there are many possibilities as to the cause of this, the bobbin scraping is not normal and perhaps you are using the wrong bobbin. If you have a model 347 Singer like in this video, you should be using a Class 66 bobbin, plastic, or metal. (Model 347 came from the factory with plastic class 66 bobbins) That bobbin has slightly curved sides, like a teacup saucer. If you are using any bobbin with flat sides it is the wrong bobbin Type & size. With the wrong bobbin, the thread can hand, snag and break and get very tangled. That's the first thing to verify. You can Google SInger Class 66 bobbins. They are sold all over the world; here in the US, you can find them anywhere sewing machines (Singer) are sold, and at Jo-Ann, fabric stores, eBay, Amazon, etc.

@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
@@melanielewis6544 You mean a technician at a sewing machine store? Did he try to sell you a new modern machine? There are two gears on model 347/348. One is on the main horizontal shaft that the handwheel turns. The other gear is directly below that gear on the top of the vertical shaft that goes to the bottom of the machine and turns the pulley that drives the timing belt. In every 347/348 I have worked on those two gears are made of solid steel. I have never seen or heard of those gears going bad or failing. Never. I'm sorry you are having this experience with that nice machine. Thank you for the offer, but I don't need it for parts. Very kind of you though. If you'd like to see what the steel gear looks like, you can pause this video at 00:11 and right of center see the front side of the gear with all the teeth on it. It sits around the horizontal shaft: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6W4YWV_ic2hbrs In this second video if you pause it at 08:23 you'll see my finger pointing at the backside of that same steel gear and you can see the back of the gear teeth. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp2knWCMnbuahck The matching gear sits below the gear in the video so the teeth can mesh together.

@andytubesewing19532 жыл бұрын
Congratulations. I did not do too many in-depth videos for model 347, but I restored many of them. It's a versatile model that still has a steel gear on the vertical shaft. It has a timing belt, but it is cogged as are the pulleys, so no problem. A favorite portable machine that can hold its own for clothing, crafting, jeans, and light upholstery. My customers loved this for a travel machine, sewing clubs, quilting clubs, vacation trips, summer homes, etc. I perfect model for the young or first-time sewist. Besides all that, it's BLUE! The model 457 videos work for the 347, but you can buy the Service Manual for $9 here: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-347-348-sewing-machine-service-manual/ When Singer went to the 400s, like 413, 416, 418, 457 they started the plastic top gear which eventually wears out, the 513, etc with plastic gears on the bottom too. Dumb. Every home should have a 337, 338, 347, or 348 for handy projects, quick repairs, and general sewing. $24? 👀🏆👍 that rocks, gurl!!

Hi Andy! What a great channel filled with useful information, new subscriber here! So I just got this beautiful machine and I'm impressed how good it works. The only issue I found is the stop motion wheel is stuck. I can still wind the bobbin but I'm afraid it will cause stress on the bobbin area. Is it ok to use like this (with the needle moving while winding the bobbin) or is there a way to unstuck the wheel? Thanks in advance, any help is much appreciated!
@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. It is better if you will fix the stop motion just to save wear and tear on the machine. Here's a couple things to try. Between the handwheel and arm shaft is a clamp washer. When you turn the smaller knob left it releases pressure on the washer so the arm shaft won't move but only the handwheel. If the washer was installed wrong then the little screw of the smaller knob can be jammed against the washer. Remove that little screw and try turning the knob. If it WAS a jam then the knob should turn. If it still won't turn the washer may be stuck to the handwheel from hard dried up oil or grease. Someways to get it loose is to heat it with a hairdryer or heat gun and soften the dried gunk. Put a little WD40 or similar oil into the hole of the little screw and behind the small knob trying to get it on the washer. You do not need a lot of oil, just a few drops. You can heat that oil also. Give it some time to work. If the knob still won't turn I give it a good smack with a rubber or wood mallet direct on the knob towards the machine to try and "jar" it loose. If you use a regular hammer of course you need to protect the knob with a thin magazine or something to prevent scratches. A couple of hits. You are not driving in a nail, just trying to jar it loose. I have also tapped on the edge of the knob on the left side downward with a rubber mallet or plastic screwdriver handle. I think you have the idea. Here is a video about the handwheel on a similar model to your machine: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHmQhHetjbGEes0 This is a common problem for a machine that's been in storage or has the washer installed wrong. Good Luck, Paula, and thanks for watching my channel.

Update: the knob came out! I tried first with oil and heat, and finally a bit of tapping with a hammer did the trick. And the washer was on the wrong side. Thank you very much!! Now I'm not sure how far I wanna go with the cleaning. The machine is filthy inside, all covered in black dust, looks like something exploded there. I already removed a few parts following your step by step restoration videos on the 337, but I'm afraid to remove everything and mess up the configuration. So I'm leaning towards doing my best with a toothbrush and cotton swabs. Do you think it's ok to use a degreaser product to clean it if I'm not going to wash it thoroughly off afterwards?
@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
@@theundergroundcambalacheHere are the instructions for the degreaser I use. It says you can wipe it dry. If very dirty and you scrub with a brush it says to wipe it off with a wet rag, but that is probably to get off the gunk you scrubbed. www.rustoleum.com/~/media/DigitalEncyclopedia/Documents/RustoleumUSA/instruction-sheets/krud-kutter/original-krud-kutter-Krud-Kutter-Original-How.ashx A couple times I moved the motor and light fixture to the outside of the machine and wrapped them in baggies then washed the whole machine with the KK and dried it. It got about 90% of the gunk out even though I had left all the other parts on the machine. I left the motor and light fixture hanging by the wire harness while washing and drying and was just careful how I carried and moved the machine. A very small amount of water leaked into the motor baggie, like a teaspoon, and I just wiped off the motor and dried it with the hairdryer. This was an effective method and took much less time than removing so many parts and then putting them back on and adjusting them to specs.

Needle will not pick up bobbin thread on model 457 singer sewing machine
@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
What to check for: bent needle, wrong type needle (use class 2020 or 15X1), needle not inserted completely, a needle inserted wrong (flat side of the top facing to back), needle bar at wrong height/hook timing off kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnKxqpZ6bpWqh8k. This model is internationally known to have a history of broken plastic gear on the top of the vertical shaft. That means the hook/timing belt will not rotate and no way to pick up the needle thread. It's a $10 gear and here is a video about replacing it kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU It is very easy to test for this by removing the bobbin and looking at the hook holding the bobbin case while you turn the handwheel towards you. If the hook does not turn (rotate counterclockwise) then you probably have a broken gear.
