Modern cars have all these safety features, yet they cannot guarantee a wheel won't come off while driving 70 mph. There should be a safety feature on your dash that immediately notifies you if any lug nuts have been breached, and there should be a lock on lug nuts so it's impossible they come off.
@todtalk39123 жыл бұрын
Makes u wonder why there also isn't even a little rubber plug type system for each lug nut to protect the bolt and the nut n keep stuff out of there, simple in theory.
@mrcoconut92052 жыл бұрын
If your lugs are torqued to spec this is not an issue but when you got DIY "techs" working on your car a significant amount of them completely ignore torque specs including your tires, all manufacturers have a wheel torque procedure which usually consists of torquing the wheel lugs to spec driving the car around in the lot a little bit and then coming back and checking the torque specs again as at least one has backed up a bit. As for technology there is no conceivable way to accomplish a sensor for lug torque or it would've been done already the technology for torque sensing components is bulky that's how they function they are subject to high torque figures so getting a sensor in there that's slim and can withstand the torque is just not conceivable on top of that TPMS are already a pain in the ass to mess with now imagine having 16+ additional sensors for each lug nut that would need to get programmed... There is a reason this kind of technology doesn't exist why fix something that isn't broken right just follow the procedure for lugs

Because that would do nothing if the lug nut comes loose the bolt will snap easily the bolt are only made to take the weight if it’s bolted properly. If it’s not bolted properly it will eventually snap. And it would be very hard to make a sensor on the bolt it self. Logical speaking your the safety feature check your vehicle now and then and you won’t have that problem

I recently purchased a used 2006 Highlander and most of the lugs on both front tires consistently started to walk themselves off despite being correctly torqued to 74ftlbs. I ordered new lugs and used blue threadlocker to keep the old ones on until I replaced them. A lot of shops just use the impact to install lugs instead of a torque wrench, so, over time, the threads can get stretched preventing them from properly mating with the threads on the studs. If you know your lugs have been torqued to spec and they're still coming loose, order new ones for EVERY tire immediately. This is a point of failure you really don't want to mess with.

At least with loose lug nuts you get some advance warning they're loose before your wheel comes off. When the studs finally snap (from your wheel being put on with an impact wrench, thus WAY over torqued) your wheel comes off without any warning.
@tristaaaaan34732 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem until yesterday. I was in a Skiing area with my car and had a bit fun in the snow, if you know what I mean. After that I had the ticking noices you've complained about and I was very pissed the whole day. A few days after I talked to my mechanic and he drove with me and afterwards he lifted the car on a lifting platform. He looked underneath and didn't find the problem, he just saw that one drive shaft sleeve had a very small leak. So we both agreed on that I continue driving until it gets louder so we can have a look on it again and hopefully see something. After I drove about 250 miles with about 120mph over the German Autobahn, the noise got about 3 times louder. When I was home I had some time to look under the car the day after. So I took my car jack and the tools to loosen the wheel. When I wanted to use the torque wrench, the wheel bolts loosen itself from the weight of torque wrench. That is when I knew I've forgotten to tight the one wheel after changing to winter tyres. That was really scary considering I drove with that setup a day ago that fast.

Just happened to me, lost two lug nuts and three were backed out half way. Initially felt a shimmy, progressed to a wobble then on to a soft thump over about 50 miles on the highway. My tires had been rotated about 1000 miles previously at a Toyota dealership during below zero weather. The wobbling tire screwed up my brake calipers and wore the pads down to nothing cost me new lug nuts, bolts,calipers, pads...$1200. Never again will I go back to that dealership in Iowa.

@codyramey61153 жыл бұрын
🤔 How much was labor!? $6-700!? The 4 items you listed, shouldn't have cost THAT much.... Obviously when you go to the dealership, you are purchasing OEM parts, but I couldn't fathom paying over a grand for something such as brakes and the necessary hardware needed for them to function properly/safely. Shazey is correct. You could've done it yourself and saved at least half of what you spent. Unless you are still within warranty of course, but even then.. just be sure to buy OEM specific parts. In such case, you'll spend a little bit more, but I highly doubt you'd close in on $1200

Great informative video. Thanks! I just want to add that if your car's manual says to torque your lug nuts to 80-100 ft lbs, I'd go for 90. I wish you torqued yours to at least 85ft lbs TBH, especially knowing that all torque wrenches have a margin of error, and your primary problem was loose lug nuts. Also about the storage of a torque wrench. Good advice. I'd say follow what's on the instruction manual. Mine says to torque it to "20% of the maximum torque setting." For others though, it is to torque it to the lowest setting.
